13:18:32 Webmama_Tina FYI, any links y'all see in the chat room will open in a new window so you don't lose your place in the chat room :)
13:18:57 CynthiaLair Sure.  I am the author of Feeding the Whole Family and Feeding the Young Athlete.  I've been on the nutrition faculty at Bastyr University School of Natural Medicine since 1994 where I teach nutrition and cooking.  I also am a mom!  My daughter is 18 and a senior in HS and I still make her breakfast!!!
13:18:58 Webmama_Tina and here's the direct link to cynthia's last chat with us, including links to her books: http://mommychats.com/mothering/cynthialair.htm
13:21:57 CynthiaLair I find it amusing that I was asked to talk about breakfast and it is sometimes a difficult meal for me to be enthusiastic about.  My body likes to wait a few hours before eating after waking.  But since I know how important the meal is, I continue to experiment.
13:23:00 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Moderated Chat Instructions before participating in this chat. Instructions can be found here: http://www.mommychats.com/modrules.htm  ...A Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. 13:23:24 CynthiaLair I'm ready for questions!
13:23:37 Webmama_Tina ok mamas, lets see some question marks! :)
13:23:56 Webmama_Tina ok i'll start....
13:24:03 Webmama_Tina what do you recommend for a very picky 5yr old?
13:24:15 CynthiaLair For breakfast?
13:24:23 Webmama_Tina she does love cereal...but i'm wondering if i should try to give her more diverse food...
13:24:37 taz925 ?
13:24:40 Webmama_Tina breakfast actually is the one meal that she is fine with as long as i have cereal....
13:25:14 Webmama_Tina i wonder if i should be trying to give her some different breakfast foods, if cereal alone is enough?
13:25:32 renalevin@aol.com ?
13:25:52 Webmama_Tina so just wondering if you have any tips for picky eaters in general, i guess..when they get stuck on one food and also in helping them try new foods....
13:26:57 Webmama_Tina she seriously doesn't seem to like anything! its so frustrating! she'd eat cereal for breakfast lunch and dinner every day if i let her!
13:27:25 CynthiaLair My favorite food to recommend for children 2-5 years of age is hot whole grain cereal.  Especially as the weather gets colder.  It is always good to include something fresh with every meal - this provides enzymes which help with digestion.  FOr example: apple slices, kiwi slices, banana - most think of breakfast as a time for fruit, but vegetables are also appropriate.  The vitamins and minerals of the fruit or vegetable also help the body transform carbohydrates into muscle glycogen (energy).
13:29:01 Webmama_Tina she does like farina
13:29:18 CynthiaLair AS long as it is not cold sugary cereal and milk as her staple, I don't see what is detrimental about eating a lot of cereal.  It is just important to include some fresh fruits or vegetables and maybe a few nuts (for fat and protein).
13:30:06 Webmama_Tina we buy our cereal at trader joe's...we stay away from the candy cereals", as we call them, :) ...joe's o's, panda puffs and puffins are staple in our house"
13:30:46 Webmama_Tina ok i'll have to start doing more fruit! i'm spending a fortune on cereal, but if she'll eat it and its healthy, what the heck? at least she's not starving, eh? LOL
13:31:04 Webmama_Tina gonna check out that kashi kids cereal now too!
13:31:13 Webmama_Tina ok next question....i'm done! :)
13:31:16 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  renalevin@aol.com
13:31:23 CynthiaLair THat's fine.  But picture in your mind what a freshly cooked whole grain looks and tastes like.  Then picture dry cereal.  Immediately you see that one is more vital than the other.
13:31:34 Webmama_Tina ok good to know :)_
13:32:07 taz925 ?
13:32:20 Webmama_Tina renalevin, you're up!
13:32:23 Webmama_Tina you still there?
13:32:43 renalevin@aol.com OK, so I got the general principles, fresh, vital, and protein.
13:33:34 renalevin@aol.com give me some real life examples, how this would play out in a family with 2 need to lose weight parents, a teenager, 9 ylo twins and a 4 y.o. who is picky.  everyone likes something else.
13:33:55 Webmama_Tina lol, yikes! :)
13:33:59 Webmama_Tina that's a job
13:34:15 renalevin@aol.com the kids gravitate towards bagels, pancakes (not homemade, commercial packaged, of course!)
13:35:17 renalevin@aol.com and junky cereal if they can get away with it! though I do prepare whole grain bread and they like pbj or pb and honey morning noon and night.
13:36:41 papayamom ?
13:38:00 CynthiaLair Whole grain cereals are nutrient-dense.  Also fiber rich.  Perfect for all you have mentioned.  I would suggest you have a mini family meeting and get a list of 5-10 breakfast foods that everyone can enjoy.  Foods that you feel good about serving.  Ok whole grain waffles or pancakes from a packaged mix are fine.  How about thinking outside the box though.  Miso soup, millet with applebutter, kasha and potato with a poached egg, steel cut oats with bananas.  Some people (my daughter too) don't like sweets for breakfast and prefer things like brown rice with tamari.
13:38:52 CynthiaLair The whole grain bread with nut butters is nice too.  It really doesn't need to be complicated.
13:39:10 renalevin@aol.com yup, I do soy yogurt. Also baby food", sweet potato with apple sauce and mashed banana with cinnamon sugar and nuts on top.  your ideas sound great, will try a family meeting.  Uncomplicated sounds great, we are one busy family."
13:39:25 CynthiaLair To get away from junky cereals, the solution is to quit buying them.
13:39:44 renalevin@aol.com :) easier said than done.
13:40:30 Webmama_Tina ?
13:41:41 CynthiaLair Rena, you might try the idea of a breakfast buffet where there is hot cereal, some wholesome breads, a lot of fruit, nut butters and other spreads available to choose from.  Then your job is just to have supplies ready and perhaps put on some hot cereal before you take your shower.  Sounds like you have a fun house full of wonderful people!
13:42:29 Webmama_Tina oooh, like that idea! :)
13:43:30 Webmama_Tina who's next angie?
13:43:32 pheline ?
13:43:36 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  taz925    papayamom  Webmama_Tina  pheline
13:43:43 taz925 How much fat and protein do they need at 6 years of age?  and 3 years of age?
13:43:44 Webmama_Tina ok taz, go for it!
13:43:49 Webmama_Tina ah you beat me, lol
13:43:59 CynthiaLair Leftovers from dinners transform into good breakfast too.  For example, Mondays mashed potatoes can turn into Wednesdays potato pattie for breakfast.  Wednesday nights leftover sweet potato can make a great spread combined with a nut butter in the blender for whole grain bread.
13:47:01 CynthiaLair Let's say (just for fun) that mother's milk is a well designed food for human growth. The proportion of nutrients is mostly carbohydrate, an ample amount of fat and a small amount of protein (surprise!).  This is perfect for babies.  As humans get older that fat requirement lessen but are still needed.  Protein needs are relatively small unless you have a family member that is very physically actice (athlete, construction work, pregnant) in which case those needs are elevated.
13:49:05 CynthiaLair So for an adult usually 3-4 ounces of protein a day is enough (the size of your fist).  I think that's a pretty good rule for most kids.  The size of THEIR fist.  I would not limit fats for children but I would be very careful about choosing high quality fats.  No trans fats, not a lot of refined oils.
13:49:45 CynthiaLair Tell me if I'm answering this in a way that makes sense for you.
13:50:24 taz925 Good to know,  I have been forcing my older son (who is beyond picky w/ lots of sensory issues) to eat more than that.  He only eats chicken nuggets for protein.
13:50:25 Webmama_Tina taz? does that answer your question?
13:50:34 taz925 Yes yes it does.  Thanks!
13:50:36 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  papayamom   Webmama_Tina   pheline
13:50:44 Webmama_Tina papayamom you're up!
13:52:02 papayamom I have a 16.5 month old who is dairy and soy sensitive. I am out of ideas for a healthy breakfast, as many of those foods revolve around dairy. Also as  result of cutting dairy from my diet I have lost weight, something with some good fats would be ideal!
13:52:21 doulasteph hello?
13:52:32 Webmama_Tina hi doulasteph...glad you made it!
13:52:35 CynthiaLair Yes I am here, give me second.
13:52:36 Webmama_Tina we're taking turns...
13:52:53 doulasteph I just had goos news to share
13:52:53 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. 13:53:04 doulasteph I survived a nursing strike!
13:53:05 Webmama_Tina At this time, please keep all side conversations to private message (PM). To PM someone, please double click their name in the user list to the right (in purple). Clicking their name in the main window will only paste their name into the chat.
13:53:24 doulasteph sorry!
13:53:49 Webmama_Tina doulasteph, i PM'd ya :)
13:55:13 CynthiaLair Hi papaya mom.  I also had a dairy sensitive child.  She did grow out of it.  ANd it is important for you and your child to keep you fat intake up.  For fat - eggs, nuts and seeds, fish, poultry, beef - you need lots of these, especially if you are losing weight.  How is your child's weight?
13:56:10 papayamom she is petite, she has grown every visit to the dr.s, I have always been thin so it's not surprising.
13:56:21 papayamom She is about 22lbs
13:56:34 Webmama_Tina our time is just about up...there are still 2 people waiting to ask questions, do you have time for them, cynthia, or do you need to leave right at the hour? its up to you. :)
13:57:07 CynthiaLair Sounds good.  The sign for worry is pale complexion, lethargy, significant weight loss.
13:57:47 CynthiaLair I'm okay until 11:15.  We did get started late due to technical difficulties and I'd like to make up for that.
13:57:50 papayamom nothing like that, definately not lethargy  :D
13:57:58 CynthiaLair Excellent!
14:00:05 Webmama_Tina ok
14:00:17 Webmama_Tina who's next?
14:00:25 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  Webmama_Tina   pheline
14:00:29 Webmama_Tina oh ME! LOL
14:00:44 Webmama_Tina ok i wanted to ask if there's a huge loss in nutrients in the instant hot cereals
14:00:51 Webmama_Tina or if its still good for us
14:01:06 Webmama_Tina like the packets that you just add boiling water to and mix and server
14:01:11 Webmama_Tina serve even :)
14:01:48 Webmama_Tina vs the kind you have to cook in a pot for 5 min, vs the ones that take longer.....what's the difference, nutrition-wise?
14:02:23 CynthiaLair It is still good but less vital than something more whole, less processed.  SO on the days when you have instant cereal, consider adding something fresh to the meal - as mentioned before.
14:03:07 Webmama_Tina ok sounds good! still better than cold cereal, i take it?
14:03:11 CynthiaLair EAch step of processing takes away some nutrients, leaves whatever fats were in the whole grains exposed to air and light, resulting in a less vital food.
14:03:40 CynthiaLair Something warn in the belly is always nicer than cold and sugary.
14:03:46 Webmama_Tina :)
14:03:53 Webmama_Tina ok pheline, your turn!
14:03:56 pheline I guess you have sort of answered my question through the protein portion question. I have been giving my 3 year old son (long and lean, aka skinny), protein at breakfast time, eg, whole wheat waffle and turkey sausage. Is protein in a.m. unnecessary?
14:04:08 pheline Thanks, arrived late, hope this hasn't already been asked.
14:04:13 CynthiaLair Whoops WARM! not warn... :/
14:05:23 CynthiaLair No.  It sounds like you have made the right call for your son.  SOunds like he's enjoying (= needs) the protein.
14:06:08 pheline Ok.  We vary it too, sometimes yogurt and granola or oatmeal, etc.
14:06:20 pheline Thanks.
14:06:26 CynthiaLair You're doing a great job!
14:06:43 Webmama_Tina what about reheating premade hot cereal? like leftover oatmeal? does it lose nutrients to nuke it?
14:06:56 Webmama_Tina sorry, threw that out there last second....since that was our last question. :)
14:06:58 pheline Let's not talk about Thanksgiving weekend at my mom's...candy and pizza in front of the tv.
14:07:07 Webmama_Tina lol pheline
14:07:08 pheline ;)
14:07:23 Webmama_Tina turkey pizza at least? LOL
14:07:33 pheline hm...I'll have to try that.
14:07:48 Webmama_Tina ;)
14:08:19 CynthiaLair Nuked oatmeal would lose a few nutrients and a lot of flavor ( Cynthia the cooking teacher coming out now). Add cinnamon, butter maybe a  little maple syrup and (of course) fresh cut apples and toasted nuts on top.  Yum.
14:08:32 MOD_Angie yummmmm
14:08:51 MOD_Angie I love oatmeal and I always recommend oatmeal to mom to increase their milk supply
14:09:00 CynthiaLair Go Angie!
14:09:25 CynthiaLair Quinoa is also an excellent grain for increasing milk supply.
14:09:41 MOD_Angie putting that one in my brain too, thx
14:09:51 Webmama_Tina never heard of it
14:09:54 CynthiaLair Or how about mochi (pounded sweet brown rice).  Gooey and hot and yummy and whole grain!
14:09:58 Webmama_Tina guess i'm going to have to take a trip to whole foods
14:10:02 MOD_Angie lol
14:10:16 Webmama_Tina i need some variety in our bfasts, so this is good to know :)
14:10:26 Webmama_Tina ok thank you sooo much cynthia! this was great!
14:10:37 CynthiaLair Plus quinoa simmers in 15 minutes.  It's quick!
14:10:37 MOD_Angie ok I have a ?

14:11:54 Webmama_Tina its a lot of fun! live radio broadcast while chatting in the hoopla chat room
14:12:02 Webmama_Tina sorry angie...ask your question :)
14:12:15 Webmama_Tina just looked up and noticed :)
14:12:32 MOD_Angie my 7 yr old only eats veggies and hardly any protein, but my almost 3 yr eats only protein and no veggies, it gets very frustrating for me to cook, any suggestions on how to disguise veggies and protein?
14:12:42 CynthiaLair 1 cup quinoa, 1 and 3/4 cup water, pinch of salt.  Bring to a boil, then turn down heat, and simmer covered for 15 minutes.  I love quinoa made into a salad with lemon olive oil parsley garlic...
14:13:33 MOD_Angie do know think nutritional supplements would help or not?  I am thinking of getting Juice Plus fruits and veggies supplements for kids
14:16:28 CynthiaLair I'm not a big fan of disguising food.  I want to be educational with my meals to so that when children leave the nest, they know how to eat to be healthy.  A well rounded meal will hopefully have vegetables and also a dish that has protein value.  Serve both and let them refuse whatever parts without comment.  At some point their curiousity (or phyiological needs) will lead them to try other things.  Especially if it has not been made into a big deal that they don't eat something.
14:17:24 MOD_Angie oh I am so glad you said that because that has been my thinking all together!!!
14:17:45 MOD_Angie but I didn't know if I was wrong for thinking it
14:18:17 MOD_Angie u reaffirmed my thinking, thx
14:18:35 CynthiaLair Supplements are tricky.  The various nutrients are designed to work together in the proportions found in food.  THat is hard to duplicate in the laboratory.  If it helps alleviate your fear and worry to give them supplemnts, that's good.  But never let them replace fresh food or compensate for eating junky processed food.  They are not powerful enough to overcome that!
14:19:36 MOD_Angie ok I think I will skip them and save my $$$ to buy foods my kids do like that are nutritious
14:20:30 crystalpea2005 Hey
14:20:41 CynthiaLair I need to sign off real soon. I would like to say how much I appreciate being a part of the Mothering population because the parents tend to be very well informed and conscientious.  It is a pleasure.
14:20:59 Webmama_Tina we're done cynthia...thankyou for sticking around! this was great!!
14:21:14 Webmama_Tina hope we can have you back again sometime!
14:21:21 Webmama_Tina hi crystalpea...we're just finishing this chat up
14:21:31 Webmama_Tina but you're welcome to stick around and chat
14:21:45 Webmama_Tina i just need everyone to move to another room so i can close this one
14:21:53 TeriC hi ladies... figures i missed the chat eh?
14:21:54 CynthiaLair Happy holidays to all.  Eat real food and enjoy it.  My mission: enjoy real food found in nature, end the fear of food that media sometimes evokes!
