I find it amusing that I was asked to
talk about breakfast and it is sometimes
a difficult meal for me to be
enthusiastic about. My body likes to
wait a few hours before eating after
waking. But since I know how important
the meal is, I continue to experiment. |

13:23:37 |
Webmama_Tina |
ok mamas, lets see some question marks!
:) |
|
13:23:56 |
Webmama_Tina |
ok i'll start.... |
|
13:24:03 |
Webmama_Tina |
what do you recommend for a very picky
5yr old? |
|
13:24:15 |
CynthiaLair |
For breakfast? |
|
13:24:23 |
Webmama_Tina |
she does love cereal...but i'm wondering
if i should try to give her more diverse
food... |
|
13:24:37 |
taz925 |
? |
|
13:24:40 |
Webmama_Tina |
breakfast actually is the one meal that
she is fine with as long as i have
cereal.... |
|
13:25:14 |
Webmama_Tina |
i wonder if i should be trying to give
her some different breakfast foods, if
cereal alone is enough? |
|
13:25:32 |
renalevin@aol.com |
? |
|
13:25:52 |
Webmama_Tina |
so just wondering if you have any tips
for picky eaters in general, i
guess..when they get stuck on one food
and also in helping them try new
foods.... |
|
13:26:57 |
Webmama_Tina |
she seriously doesn't seem to like
anything! its so frustrating! she'd eat
cereal for breakfast lunch and dinner
every day if i let her! |
|
13:27:25 |
CynthiaLair |
My favorite food to recommend for
children 2-5 years of age is hot whole
grain cereal. Especially as the weather
gets colder. It is always good to
include something fresh with every meal
- this provides enzymes which help with
digestion. FOr example: apple slices,
kiwi slices, banana - most think of
breakfast as a time for fruit, but
vegetables are also appropriate. The
vitamins and minerals of the fruit or
vegetable also help the body transform
carbohydrates into muscle glycogen
(energy). |
|
13:29:01 |
Webmama_Tina |
she does like farina |
|
13:29:18 |
CynthiaLair |
AS long as it is not cold sugary cereal
and milk as her staple, I don't see what
is detrimental about eating a lot of
cereal. It is just important to include
some fresh fruits or vegetables and
maybe a few nuts (for fat and protein). |
|
13:30:06 |
Webmama_Tina |
we buy our cereal at trader joe's...we
stay away from the candy cereals", as we
call them, :) ...joe's o's, panda puffs
and puffins are staple in our house" |
|
13:30:46 |
Webmama_Tina |
ok i'll have to start doing more fruit!
i'm spending a fortune on cereal, but if
she'll eat it and its healthy, what the
heck? at least she's not starving, eh?
LOL |
|
13:31:04 |
Webmama_Tina |
gonna check out that kashi kids cereal

THat's fine. But picture in your mind
what a freshly cooked whole grain looks
and tastes like. Then picture dry
cereal. Immediately you see that one is
more vital than the other. |

this would play out in a family with 2

Whole grain cereals are nutrient-dense.
Also fiber rich. Perfect for all you
have mentioned. I would suggest you
have a mini family meeting and get a
list of 5-10 breakfast foods that
everyone can enjoy. Foods that you feel
good about serving. Ok whole grain
waffles or pancakes from a packaged mix
are fine. How about thinking outside
the box though. Miso soup, millet with
applebutter, kasha and potato with a
poached egg, steel cut oats with
bananas. Some people (my daughter too)
don't like sweets for breakfast and
prefer things like brown rice with
tamari. |
|
13:38:52 |
CynthiaLair |
The whole grain bread with nut butters
is nice too. It really doesn't need to
be complicated. |
|
13:39:10 |
renalevin@aol.com |
yup, I do soy yogurt. Also baby food",
sweet potato with apple sauce and mashed
banana with cinnamon sugar and nuts on
top. your ideas sound great, will try a
family meeting. Uncomplicated sounds
great, we are one busy family." |
|
13:39:25 |
CynthiaLair |
To get away from junky cereals, the
solution is to quit buying them. |
|
13:39:44 |

Rena, you might try the idea of a
breakfast buffet where there is hot
cereal, some wholesome breads, a lot of
fruit, nut butters and other spreads
available to choose from. Then your job
is just to have supplies ready and
perhaps put on some hot cereal before
you take your shower. Sounds like you
have a fun house full of wonderful
people! |

6 years of age? and 3 years of age? |

Webmama_Tina |
ok taz, go for it! |
|
13:43:49 |
Webmama_Tina |
ah you beat me, lol |
|
13:43:59 |
CynthiaLair |
Leftovers from dinners transform into
good breakfast too. For example,
Mondays mashed potatoes can turn into
Wednesdays potato pattie for breakfast.
Wednesday nights leftover sweet potato
can make a great spread combined with a
nut butter in the blender for whole
grain bread. |
|
13:47:01 |
CynthiaLair |
Let's say (just for fun) that mother's
milk is a well designed food for human
growth. The proportion of nutrients is
mostly carbohydrate, an ample amount of
fat and a small amount of protein
(surprise!). This is perfect for
babies. As humans get older that fat
requirement lessen but are still
needed. Protein needs are relatively
small unless you have a family member
that is very physically actice (athlete,
construction work, pregnant) in which
case those needs are elevated. |
|
13:49:05 |
CynthiaLair |
So for an adult usually 3-4 ounces of
protein a day is enough (the size of
your fist). I think that's a pretty
good rule for most kids. The size of
THEIR fist. I would not limit fats for
children but I would be very careful
about choosing high quality fats. No
trans fats, not a lot of refined oils. |
|
13:49:45 |

Tell me if I'm answering this in a way
that makes sense for you. |

Good to know, I have been forcing my

of sensory issues) to eat more than
that. He only eats chicken nuggets for
protein. |

Hi papaya mom. I also had a dairy
sensitive child. She did grow out of
it. ANd it is important for you and
your child to keep you fat intake up.
For fat - eggs, nuts and seeds, fish,
poultry, beef - you need lots of these,
especially if you are losing weight.
How is your child's weight? |
|
13:56:10 |
papayamom |
she is petite, she has grown every visit
to the dr.s, I have always been thin so
it's not surprising. |

|
14:01:48 |
Webmama_Tina |
vs the kind you have to cook in a pot
for 5 min, vs the ones that take
longer.....what's the difference,
nutrition-wise? |
|
14:02:23 |
CynthiaLair |
It is still good but less vital than
something more whole, less processed.
SO on the days when you have instant
cereal, consider adding something fresh
to the meal - as mentioned before. |
|
14:03:07 |
Webmama_Tina |
ok sounds good! still better than cold
cereal, i take it? |
|
14:03:11 |
CynthiaLair |
EAch step of processing takes away some
nutrients, leaves whatever fats were in
the whole grains exposed to air and
light, resulting in a less vital food. |
|
14:03:40 |
CynthiaLair |
Something warn in the belly is always
nicer than cold and sugary. |

protein in a.m. unnecessary? |

1 cup quinoa, 1 and 3/4 cup water, pinch

down heat, and simmer covered for 15
minutes. I love quinoa made into a
salad with lemon olive oil parsley
garlic... |

MOD_Angie |
do know think nutritional supplements
would help or not? I am thinking of
getting Juice Plus fruits and veggies

|
14:16:28 |
CynthiaLair |
I'm not a big fan of disguising food. I
want to be educational with my meals to
so that when children leave the nest,
they know how to eat to be healthy. A
well rounded meal will hopefully have
vegetables and also a dish that has
protein value. Serve both and let them
refuse whatever parts without comment.
At some point their curiousity (or
phyiological needs) will lead them to
try other things. Especially if it has
not been made into a big deal that they
don't eat something. |

Supplements are tricky. The various
nutrients are designed to work together
in the proportions found in food. THat
is hard to duplicate in the laboratory.
If it helps alleviate your fear and
worry to give them supplemnts, that's
good. But never let them replace fresh
food or compensate for eating junky
processed food. They are not powerful
enough to overcome that! |

ok I think I will skip them and save my
$$$ to buy foods my kids do like that
are nutritious |

I need to sign off real soon. I would
like to say how much I appreciate being
a part of the Mothering population
because the parents tend to be very well
informed and conscientious. It is a
pleasure. |

Happy holidays to all. Eat real food
and enjoy it. My mission: enjoy real
food found in nature, end the fear of
food that media sometimes evokes! |
