21:02:40 David H. Albert Wow, you type fast!
21:02:44 Webmama_Tina lol
21:02:51 Webmama_Tina gotta love copy/paste
21:04:21 Webmama_Tina ok David, anything you'd like to add to that intro?
21:04:43 David H. Albert Just that I'm happy to be here, and typing rather than speaking (bad chest cold...)
21:05:02 Webmama_Tina aww, hope you feel better soon!
21:05:17 SandraMort Oh, that's no fun.
21:05:18 David H. Albert sickness is a sign of moral turpitude.
21:05:29 Webmama_Tina lol ok
21:05:34 SandraMort Oh, I hope not.
21:05:56 Stacey B ?
21:05:56 Webmama_Tina well mamas, if you have questions for david, just throw out a question mark and chat_manager (juliet) will gather the list :)
21:06:04 Webmama_Tina stacey, go for it!
21:06:13 SandraMort Wow, a helper!
21:06:19 Webmama_Tina yup!
21:06:49 Stacey B I've read both your books  I am interested in what things were like during the earlier years of the \learning\""
21:07:23 David H. Albert Actually, I have three homeschoolin' books (LOL!) I presume you mean the kids (not me?)
21:07:40 Stacey B yes, sorry I guess I'm off a little
21:08:39 David H. Albert Well, we mostly just had a very, very good time! The kids allowed us the opportunity to revisit our own educations, and do it right this time. Both my wife and I recareered so that we could spend much more time with the kids. Moved to a place which was muc
21:09:07 David H. Albert much less expensive, went lots of place, explored things we had never been able to explore in our own youth.
21:09:40 David H. Albert In some sense, I think of it like a Jackson Pollack painting - we threw lots of paint around, and watched for what stuck.
21:10:25 David H. Albert We learned so much from both of the kids, including their differences! I like to tell folks I have one \noun\" and one \"verb\". The first didn't prepare us at all for the second!"
21:11:03 David H. Albert Since my wife and I are both very \nounish\" (and I nerdy in addition), having a verb was a wonderful new experience!"
21:11:18 Webmama_Tina lol
21:11:38 David H. Albert I have always thought of school as a bad substitute for a good family. Well, we HAD a good family.
21:12:12 David H. Albert So the way we looked at it, school was the \alternative\" - the family was the first option."
21:12:41 David H. Albert Then, just a lot of watching and listening and patience - all very difficult for a New Yorker!
21:12:53 Stacey B I understand that
21:12:59 David H. Albert Love and listening are synonyms, really.
21:13:10 SandraMort You're a New Yorker?
21:13:13 Stacey B yes
21:13:18 David H. Albert Born and bred.
21:13:22 SandraMort Cool!
21:13:29 SandraMort ?

21:13:49 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: SandraMort
21:14:06 SandraMort Born in Queens, grew up in Manhattan, high school in the Bronx and currently in Astoria
21:14:25 SandraMort Though if you went from Queens to Manhattan I'd guess Stuy or Hunter.
21:14:44 Beating_Earth ?
21:15:10 David H. Albert Used to sneak into the 1963 World's Fair through a hole in the fence. (yes, Stuy). That's where I learned all about Corfam shoes, and electronic people singing \It's a great big, beautiful tomorrow.\""
21:15:44 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: SandraMort, Beating_Earth
21:16:27 Beating_Earth My biggest question is how to you get started??  I really have no idea how this would work.
21:16:43 SandraMort Does that mean it's my turn yet?
21:16:46 chat_manager Beating_Earth, hold on...
21:16:54 Beating_Earth sorry
21:16:57 chat_manager David, are you ready for a new question
21:16:58 chat_manager ?
21:17:03 David H. Albert Ah, yes. Well, once you've figured out that you are doing it, you've started. Really!
21:17:08 David H. Albert ready
21:17:11 Webmama_Tina ?
21:17:13 chat_manager If David is ready, then it is time for SandraMort
21:17:29 chat_manager OK, SandraMort, go ahead and then Beating Earth you'll be next~
21:17:55 SandraMort I sent in a IHIP and they sent me back a form and I panicked.  They've sent me mail a couple of times and I haven't been brave enough to open the letters.  Am I going to jail?
21:18:17 David H. Albert No legal expertise here. I'll send cookies.
21:18:22 SandraMort LOL  Tanks

21:19:38 hillyb6 .
21:19:48 Webmama_Tina david just let us know when you are ready for the next question...so juliet can let the next person know to go. :)
21:19:56 David H. Albert ready
21:20:06 chat_manager OK, Beating_Earth, you are up!
21:20:16 Beating_Earth Ok, do you start with just kinda going in the direction the kids wanna go.  But after that .... what.
21:21:06 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: Webmama_Tina ,
21:21:16 David H. Albert Well, you find what stuck to the painting. Or what feeds their souls. Then you strategize about how you can feed it further. I like to call what we do \child-directed, family-centered\" learning."
21:21:37 Beating_Earth so no real cirriculum per se
21:22:15 David H. Albert It took me a while, but I finally figured out that 99% of the time the kids were able to tell me what they needed, if only I listened hard enough. It's not as direct as \on-demand breast feeding\", or "
21:22:41 chat_manager  Reminder: If you have a question for David, please type a ? and you will be added to the list of upcoming chatters. Be sure to have your question ready when you are called upon.
21:22:48 pazeley ?
21:22:57 David H. Albert cooing back and forth, or entering into the 21-month old's \gift exchange\", but it is the same idea."
21:23:12 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: Webmama_Tina , pazeley
21:23:20 Beating_Earth that makes sense.  thank you
21:23:41 David H. Albert When we discovered curricula that could feed their needs we used them. But we never, or almost never, picked the curricula first. (honestly, we didn't use very much.) Ready...
21:24:02 chat_manager OK, Webmama_Tina, you are up~!
21:24:10 Webmama_Tina ok
21:24:17 Webmama_Tina i'm currently homeschooling my 6yr old...but because of my 20mo old i'm not yet able to do much focused work...i usually tell people we are \unschooling unintentionally\"...not that i don't want to be unschooling, but i do want to do some planned stuff too...do you have any suggestions as to what to do with a precocious 20month old? i swear he freaks even when i just sit down and read a book to my dd!"
21:24:31 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: pazeley
21:25:04 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: pazeley, hillyb6
21:25:08 David H. Albert I LOVE 6 and 7 year olds! In fact, someday, I've got a book coming out about them.
21:25:11 Webmama_Tina its been darn near impossible to get into any sort of a routine...
21:25:30 David H. Albert Their chronological sense of time, there is a before and there is an after expands in all kinds of new ways.
21:25:32 Webmama_Tina i think i'm routine challenged
21:25:34 Webmama_Tina LOL
21:25:48 David H. Albert The coiled spring that is within them springs out in new directions.
21:26:18 David H. Albert New potentialities, new possibilities. The questions in the car change, and their are so many of them!!!
21:26:45 David H. Albert What to do with the 20 month old? well, you juggle!
21:26:49 Webmama_Tina LOL
21:26:56 Webmama_Tina that's the problem...i'm not so good at that
21:27:04 David H. Albert I don't mean that lightly - it is part of the lesson the 6-year-old is taking in, too.
21:27:11 Webmama_Tina and i swear i'm ADD because i get knocked off track very very easily
21:27:34 David H. Albert That moms have multiple responsibilities and that we all make choices to meet them as best we can.
21:27:37 David H. Albert Don
21:27:58 David H. Albert don't worry, because your 6-year old takes that all in, and it is a GOOD thing.
21:28:15 Webmama_Tina between the housework, the computer (i have 2 online businesses), the extra curricular activities, the baby's needs, etc...the \school\" work gets pushed to bottom of the list of priorities most days...i'm fighting right now to bring it back to the top"
21:28:22 David H. Albert Probably more important that reading that book while the 20-month old howls.
21:28:46 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: pazeley, hillyb6
21:28:50 David H. Albert Reframe the school work!!!
21:29:06 hillyb6 bootedmyself sorry
21:29:16 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: pazeley, hillyb6
21:29:21 Webmama_Tina yeah i've read that during this age that i should just go lightly with any sort of homeschooling...because the toddler needs me more...i can get my daughter caught up later? do you agree with that?
21:29:34 David H. Albert Look, we live in a numerate and literate culture.
21:29:52 Webmama_Tina reframe how?
21:30:15 David H. Albert In a numerate and literate culture, everyone learns to read and do numbers. Do the math in the grocery store. Read the street signs, or the signs on the vegetables.
21:30:39 David H. Albert If you make your family work, it will work for everyone. And he will learn.
21:30:41 Webmama_Tina yeah she's not really \behind\" per se...she knows so much already, just figures it out herself...i just feel like i should be \"doing\" more!"
21:31:07 David H. Albert She was born that way! A shark is born to eat. A child is born to learn.
21:31:07 Webmama_Tina but darned if i can! i just am hanging in there to make it through the toddler years at this point, LOL!
21:31:13 Webmama_Tina too true
21:31:19 Webmama_Tina its amazing to see
21:31:37 David H. Albert It will all go by so quickly. Sigh. Savor every screaming fit!
21:31:43 Webmama_Tina lol, uh ok
21:31:45 Webmama_Tina ROFL
21:31:52 Webmama_Tina and boy is he good at those! LOL
21:32:02 Webmama_Tina ok thank you david!
21:32:08 David H. Albert I am working with one of my homeschool clients in Florida....
21:32:43 David H. Albert The kid whines. So I had the family go out and buy some white boards, and turn every whine into an equation.
21:32:46 chat_manager Reminder:  If you have a question for David, type a ? to be added to the list.  Please have your question ready when it is your turn.
21:33:20 David H. Albert d = t(x) + t(y) + t(z)
21:33:21 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters: pazeley, hillyb6
21:33:29 David H. Albert You know what that is?
21:33:33 Webmama_Tina LOL how does that work?
21:33:38 Webmama_Tina nope, no clue
21:33:45 Webmama_Tina been a long time since i did any equations, LOL
21:34:28 David H. Albert The kid screamed that he couldn't dry homeself. Well, d is \dry\". t is towel. x = head, y = upper body; z = lower body. The kid now has an equation for drying himself."
21:34:34 David H. Albert ready
21:35:05 Webmama_Tina LOL!
21:35:07 Webmama_Tina too funny
21:35:14 Webmama_Tina go for it pazeley
21:35:15 pazeley Could you talk a bit about finding mentors for the kids. We've always homeschooled - some days I'd like a little break. I have a precocious \verb\" and mentors seem to want \"nouns\" or at least very well behaved \"verbs\"."
21:35:18 David H. Albert This is for a 7-year old, and he got it immediately. (and now dries himself, too.)
21:35:19 chat_manager pazeley, you are up
21:35:34 Webmama_Tina lol
21:35:44 David H. Albert Yeah. Your whole community is full of 'em.
21:36:08 David H. Albert My favorite was a neighbor. Now, as noted, I'm from NYC, and wife is from DC, and what do we know from plants?
21:36:18 hillyb6 .
21:36:46 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  hillyb6
21:37:23 David H. Albert Somehow, a naturalist soul got dropped in our house. Well, in exchange for helping this old woman weed hhalf an hour twice a week, older one age 6 got taught the names of hundreds of plants (learned 'em in English and Latin, and all their soil and water re
21:38:32 David H. Albert requirements. Mentors are all around - but it doesn't mean that it is particularly easy to find 'em. But \mentors\" are not a way to get a break - the kids will come home more exciting, more energized, and more exhausting! if you've found good ones."
21:38:41 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  hillyb6, chat_manager
21:38:53 pazeley Thanks, I guess I shouldn't think so much about mentor's with credentials.
21:39:06 David H. Albert We thought that having the \verb\" in gymnastics three hours a day at age 5 or 6 would tire her out. Uh, no...."
21:39:11 David H. Albert ready
21:39:47 chat_manager hillyb6, you are up!
21:39:49 hillyb6 out of cursoity i think naturally parents do child centered learning ie we see what interest our child and feed that  by play,l trips and other things, so if you only do childcentered learning how does the child ever learn to learn and to be out side
21:39:53 hillyb6 hier comfortzone, how do you push them to leanr things they arent good at or interested in, how to work out side with peoople that are  not easy to work with under circumtances thart are less than ideal
21:40:06 David H. Albert If you need some credentials, I'll sell you some, in exchange for odd musical instruments (I currently want a piffero from Abruzzi - my older d is now living in florence and...
21:40:47 hillyb6 .
21:40:58 David H. Albert Oh, my kids were ALWAYS interested in things they weren't particuarly good at. As for learning things you aren't interested in....never works....did it ever work for you?
21:41:13 hillyb6 but they still need to learn them
21:41:21 hillyb6 how do you make them learn then they that need ot learn even if they dont want to
21:41:31 hillyb6 life is full of things we arent interested in and still need to do and learn
21:41:44 David H. Albert They do need to LEARN, it doesn't follow that they need to be TAUGHT!
21:41:54 hillyb6 i dont understand that
21:42:04 hillyb6 how do you learn if not by being taught
21:42:15 hillyb6 by the world, by your family by teachers
21:42:19 hillyb6 but still its all teaching
21:42:23 David H. Albert The Japanese economy roared ahead in the 80s when they got rid of all worker training.
21:42:50 David H. Albert They would only train a worker in tasks needed to be learned when it would immediately be followed by the chance to put the skill to work.
21:43:26 Ames .
21:43:38 David H. Albert Well, kids work the same way. If your child has a subject they want to learn about, and you are a complete dunce about it, they'll learn to read pretty darn quick.
21:44:04 David H. Albert In my Skylark book, I talk about the experience of my older one working at Wolf Haven International.
21:44:18 David H. Albert Now, to me, a wolf is big messy dog.
21:44:24 hillyb6 thats not really waht i mean  let say your child is not interesting in learn math but yet they need ot learn math how doy ou teach them math if they dont want o learn it
21:44:37 David H. Albert Ignorance is one of the great gifts of the homeschooling parent.
21:44:47 hillyb6 why is that a gift
21:45:02 David H. Albert Give 'em $2.00 in the grocery store. Tell them they can purchase as much candy as they want with $2.00
21:45:34 SandraMort Heh
21:45:40 David H. Albert But if they go one penny over, they lose it all. You'll be amazed at how quickly they learn addition, subtraction, multiplication.
21:45:44 SandraMort You may be there a while, but they'll get it.
21:45:53 SandraMort Eva LOVES to shop for me.
21:46:11 hillyb6 umm that doesnt sound very useful for 6 kids  sounds like mommy wil need to take up drinking after that trip to the store
21:46:24 Webmama_Tina LOL!
21:46:29 David H. Albert If you have two kids, the one that gets closest to $2 without going over gets an extra buck
21:46:29 hillyb6 maybe give them 10 bucks and have them pick out somethin for mommy migraine
21:46:42 Stacey B .
21:47:06 David H. Albert I have a whole thing I'm working on called \Super Market math\". All math - K-8  - in the supermarket (and a lot more!)"
21:47:16 SandraMort That sounds like fun. :)
21:47:18 Webmama_Tina oh awesome!
21:47:27 David H. Albert You can only do it one kid at a time, because they will be at different developmental stages.
21:47:31 hillyb6 hum i am currently trying to get a way to teach my 5yrold preschool since he was just pulled out recently due to health issues  so he is ready for kindy any suggestions for the summermonth to get him ready
21:47:58 David H. Albert Choose 10 items to buy, and commit to spending NOT LESS THAN AN HOUR buying them.
21:48:18 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  chat_manager, Stacey B
21:48:29 David H. Albert The thing is - we all need to re-energize our own habits of inquiry, of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.
21:49:11 David H. Albert My next book is actually called \Dismantling the Inner School\"; if we could just get those schoolish habits to thinking and being out of our brain, there's almost no end to what we can do with our kids. Ready."
21:49:29 my2boys00-03 ?
21:49:34 chat_manager I have a 6yo, 4yo and 2yo.  The 4 yo wants to be doing everything the 6yo is doing but I am seeing that she is missing out on some her developmental requirements – almost like because she is already reading (read at 3 because she wanted to) and doing 1st gr. math she didn’t get enough time to be a child and go through her developmental needs – now is easily frustrated although highly motivated.  How would you suggest handling a young, spirited, stubborn and easily frustrated achievement-oriented child?  She wants to do everything her big sister does and I want to help foster her childhood, her time to be a child.  We are at odds, in a way.
21:50:16 David H. Albert Well, she's told you what SHE needs, hasn't she?
21:50:36 David H. Albert They're all different. Diversity is nature's way of caring for the species.
21:50:49 chat_manager yes, I guess I'm just worried about her developmentally
21:51:17 chat_manager her big sister is her step sister and when she goes to her other house on the weekends my 4yo acts differently...
21:51:24 chat_manager more her age, I guess
21:51:27 David H. Albert Don't create trauma - THAT is what is developmentally damaging. There is enough trauma in the world without creating extra.
21:51:38 chat_manager OK, I can see that
21:52:07 David H. Albert On the whole, 6-year-olds are much more fragile than 4-year olds. (that's a generalization - take with two fistfuls of salt.)
21:52:23 my2boys00-03 ?
21:52:29 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  Stacey B, my2boys00-03
21:52:38 chat_manager good to know
21:52:42 chat_manager I appreciate you saying that
21:52:47 David H. Albert So...you found a way for her to act differently when the occasion arises. Sounds like a success story to me!
21:52:51 David H. Albert ready
21:52:53 chat_manager I guess I was just so worried about her doing too much too soon
21:53:16 chat_manager because of some invisible pressure she might have felt to be like her big sister
21:53:21 David H. Albert Think of sharks. They KNOW when they are hungry, and they seek out the right food.
21:53:39 chat_manager TRUE
21:53:45 chat_manager I have to do some more trusting
21:53:45 David H. Albert Ah, yes, family dynamics. Family systems requires a whole 'nother chat!
21:53:57 chat_manager my background in Child Development gets me in trouble sometimes
21:54:01 chat_manager LOL
21:54:09 David H. Albert John Holt once said that all of his life's work could be summed up in two words:
21:54:16 David H. Albert Trust children.
21:54:23 chat_manager right, so true
21:54:28 chat_manager thanks for the reminder
21:54:40 David H. Albert But I've come to the conclusion that, for most of us, with the inner schools inhabiting our minds
21:54:48 David H. Albert That's too difficult.
21:54:57 chat_manager it is difficult
21:55:00 David H. Albert So I've added a word: Trust Children MORE.
21:55:09 chat_manager Oh, that is beautiful
21:55:13 David H. Albert So who said it should be easy?
21:55:23 David H. Albert ready
21:55:27 Stacey B our son is still  young, we decided to homeschool on our first date.  Ever since he was born we have been trying to unlearn for ourselves, difficult since we are both ex teachers.  Anyway, I wonder how to keep from being to \teachy\"?"
21:55:31 chat_manager No one...that for sure!
21:55:53 David H. Albert Ah, yes. Wall paper the entire house!
21:56:00 Webmama_Tina lol
21:56:05 David H. Albert I have a rule.
21:56:08 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  my2boys00-03
21:56:14 David H. Albert Works about 95% of the time.
21:56:34 David H. Albert AS former jailers (sorry), you have a great advantage...
21:56:52 David H. Albert Figure out in each situation what they would have done in school....
21:56:58 David H. Albert And do the opposite.
21:57:04 David H. Albert ready

21:58:03 SandraMort that was fast!
21:58:04 Webmama_Tina david, do you have time to answer the last questions?
21:58:10 David H. Albert So...go grocery shopping, and work on labels!
21:58:18 my2boys00-03 he only plays around when i try to help him and he still isnt learning anything from me
21:58:19 David H. Albert I'm not going nowhere.

21:58:39 my2boys00-03 we have tried and he just ''play stupid'' like looks and says i dont know
21:58:48 David H. Albert Maybe he doesn't want to learn with you. (There's a wonderful book called \I won't learn from you....)"
21:59:02 my2boys00-03 ok so who would you suggest
21:59:13 David H. Albert Assuming that there is no \organic brain syndrome\", fetal alcohol syndrome, uncorrected vision problems"
21:59:16 my2boys00-03 his father sint home much due to a nasty work hours
21:59:25 my2boys00-03 no he is prefectly healthy
21:59:28 my2boys00-03 isnt*
21:59:42 David H. Albert Post-traumatic stress disorder (often caused by school environments...he probably has some of that...)
21:59:45 my2boys00-03 he just plays around when we sit and work on lessons
21:59:50 David H. Albert He WILL learn to read.
22:00:15 my2boys00-03 they said he is on level 11 which he has to be on level 13 to pass 1st grade
22:00:27 David H. Albert Does he have anything he WANTS to read? Why would you want to learn to use a hammer and nail if there was nothing you wish to learn?
22:00:54 my2boys00-03 we go to the library and he picks books but isnt really into reading it
22:01:04 chat_manager Upcoming Chatters:  hillyb6, learningbarefoot (then queue is closed)
22:01:05 David H. Albert I have no clue who made up this level 11 or this level 13 or why I should trust them? You know your kid better than they do
22:01:08 my2boys00-03 he picks out mostly picture books
22:01:09 Webmama_Tina what about games?
22:01:34 David H. Albert Street signs. Sorting the mail. Videos from the rental store.
22:01:35 my2boys00-03 i just dont want him to get held back when i know in my heart he can do it it is just him giving the bit of eefort

22:02:15 my2boys00-03 ok i will cont. to work with him and if he starts to pull back do i stop and start another day or push a bit
22:02:48 David H. Albert Those who learn to read at 8 or later (and don't have the aforementioned problems) outstrip the early readers, on average, by age 14.

22:04:44 David H. Albert And when we told her we were homeschooling, she said, \That's great, don't you think I know what goes on there?"
22:04:56 hillyb6 but ia m not a jailer former or otherwise but arent we all our childresn teachers
22:05:39 David H. Albert It is compulsory. It is bounded by four walls. One can't read, talk, write, move about, sing, dance, or defecate without permission. I'm sorry for the word, but I ask you to look at the larger context. Teachers are wonderful people!
22:05:42 learningbarefoot ok
22:06:04 David H. Albert Stuck inside institutions that don't treat them, or their charges, very well (or in a humane manner)

22:10:03 Webmama_Tina was that our last question juliet?
22:10:19 David H. Albert Never use the term myself. It explains nothing. Holt used the words \homeschooler\" and \"unschooler' interchangeably. "

22:10:35 Webmama_Tina ok
22:10:45 Webmama_Tina so david do you have any links to share as we wrap this up?
22:10:55 David H. Albert I just think once you've gotten outside the walls of institution, we have to seek to get beyond the walls inside our own heads.
