20:02:20 Webmama_Tina ok and today we are very lucky to have linda palmer as our guest speaker!
20:02:25 Webmama_Tina linda why don't you introduce yourself?
20:02:38 Webmama_Tina tell us a little about your background and expertise and anything else you want to share...
20:02:42 Linda_Palmer I'm retired DC -- after the birth of my son
20:02:59 Linda_Palmer I found that pediatric advice was often far from helpful and sometimes harmful
20:03:08 Linda_Palmer verydifferent from science research
20:03:08 Webmama_Tina and mamas, you can start throwing out your question marks (not questions, just the marks, please) at any time and angie will tell you when its your turn to ask linda your question :)
20:03:25 Webmama_Tina and don't mind me as i do my welcome here and there for latecomers
20:03:31 Linda_Palmer I was astounded at the amount of research available and how it differed from common pediatric advice...
20:03:43 TurboClaudia DC == Doctor of Chiropractic ???
20:03:51 Linda_Palmer Eventually came my writing of the book Baby Matters""
20:04:09 Linda_Palmer Yes, Doctor of Chiro -- I practiced for 11 years focusing on nutrition and women's issues
20:04:31 Linda_Palmer Rest of the book title: What your doctor may not tell you about caring for your baby""
20:04:55 Linda_Palmer 1100 science journal refs among the thousands refs that the book is based upon
20:05:34 Linda_Palmer I do lots of nutritional counseling --- breastfeeding and food allergies and colic and some necessary formula supplementers too (like adoptive moms)
20:06:12 maltagirl ?
20:06:30 Linda_Palmer I've also focussed heavily on attachment parenting issues such as co-sleeping and how their is a huge difference in all of theses between science based evidence and industry based disinformation.
20:06:38 Linda_Palmer Yes.
20:06:54 Linda_Palmer Yes maltagirl
20:06:55 maltagirl I'm here to learn more about food allergies in breastfed babies, especially allergies that are non IgE mediated
20:07:01 Webmama_Tina are you ready for your first question? oh i guess you are, lol
20:07:13 maltagirl my daughter has a severe peanut allergy
20:07:18 Webmama_Tina they will be throwing out question marks to get in line to ask a question...just FYI linda. :)
20:07:27 maltagirl but it doesn't show up on any tests
20:07:36 Linda_Palmer UNfortunately, the tests available are not very valuable. You need to go by what you observe.
20:07:52 maltagirl we know because she had anaphylaxis and any nuts I eat give her a rash around her mouth after she nurses
20:08:03 Linda_Palmer Your observations are far more valuable than anything else
20:08:09 maltagirl I'm avoiding nuts and other allergens so my son (also nursing) isn't exposed
20:08:29 Linda_Palmer Is that her only food problem?? GOod idea on the son.
20:08:35 maltagirl my pediatrician knows nothing about any of this and it
20:08:41 maltagirl sorry -- it's very frustrating
20:08:58 maltagirl Anna has a bad dairy sensitivity really early on
20:09:03 Linda_Palmer Peanut allergies are so very common and these are at least medically accepted. It's too bad your ped doesn't know about it
20:09:18 Linda_Palmer You shoudl be able to find someone who does in terms of the anaphylactic allergies
20:09:31 maltagirl in her first few weeks I saw blood in her diapers and suspected a milk allergy because when I quit cow's milk, she was a different baby
20:09:54 maltagirl but the ped tried to tell me she was overfed" (which isn't common in a breastfed baby) and that I should schedule her"
20:09:57 Linda_Palmer Now the dairy, that's a way different story in terms of medical acknowledgement. They've been educated by formula companies and dairy industry and that's all the info they have.
20:10:20 maltagirl my gut said that was wrong so I went completely off dairy.  Turns out I was allergic, too (I felt great off the cow juice)
20:10:28 sarahariz ?
20:10:37 Linda_Palmer I'm so sorry for the ped's attitude and ignorance (did I say that word? -- please find a gentler one for me
20:10:45 sandrin Mothering_Mag
20:10:57 maltagirl I have a known allergy to eggs, as well, and shellfish but noe ever told me to avoid allergens while breastfeeding
20:11:05 Linda_Palmer GO BY YOUR GUT!!! AND IGNORE THE REST
20:11:11 Webmama_Tina you made it sandrin :)
20:11:14 Linda_Palmer I can already see that you're going to do just fine with this issue.
20:11:14 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called."
20:11:27 maltagirl Anna had her first peanut butter just after she turned 1 and it was a very scary situation
20:11:33 MiaFerrer I would find a better Doc if i were you
20:11:46 maltagirl I'm in the Army and get what I get -- no real choices
20:12:13 Linda_Palmer You won't find a better doc in terms of the dairy --- but your peanut child may need an epi-pen and you'll need to consult an allergist
20:12:20 Linda_Palmer and hope they recognize it
20:12:36 maltagirl the allergist was cool about writing us notes to let us decide what Anna eats, but was not very informative about the results of the allergy tests that were totally negative
20:12:46 maltagirl We have epi-pens everywhere Anna goes
20:13:03 Linda_Palmer oh my... hopefully you can keep her alive until she's old enough for it to show up on blood tests. Many things never do, but peanuts usually will.
20:13:20 Linda_Palmer Oh, well that's good.
20:13:23 maltagirl I read that one in five outgrows the allergy -- when is a good age to challenge and test?
20:14:07 Linda_Palmer Peanut allergies are far less commonly outgrown than other allergies. I'd wait until age 5 to try --- before Kindergarten so you know how much challenge you'll be up against.
20:14:24 Linda_Palmer If it's anaphylactic though, you might want to try in a doctor's office.
20:14:47 maltagirl thanks!  we will wait until then and do it at the clinic
20:14:53 Electra375 ?
20:15:12 Linda_Palmer AAlso know that the first exposure might be not elicit a response, but the body might then remember it's chosen allergy and make antibodies that will be there waiting for days or weeks for a second exposure --- which could then be very bad
20:15:12 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  MOD_Angie    Electra375
20:15:36 Linda_Palmer Another question?
20:15:40 maltagirl I think ANna's first exposure was actually to almond milk
20:16:02 sandrin ?
20:16:04 janicemarchman ?
20:16:09 MiaFerrer ?
20:16:11 Linda_Palmer So some are only peanut-allergic and some to many/most/all nuts and even peach skins and such
20:16:33 Electra375 My son came back neg to allergy blood test age 3 1/2.  He had a skin reaction at church to playing with and inhaling Rye bread.  He is also now on a GF diet waiting for an offical Celiac Disease diagnosis.  Long story, but finally a doctor to listen to me
20:16:44 Linda_Palmer Sandrin -- your question?? ANd who said they had one before her -- I forgot?
20:16:49 Linda_Palmer Oh, Electra, fine
20:16:50 Electra375 that something was wrong.  Is it normal for children to not show up on
20:16:58 sandrin my son was exposed to fish and had a rash, how long should i wait
20:17:00 Electra375 RAST allergy test as positive
20:17:05 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): MOD_Angie   Electra375   sarahariz   sandrin    janicemarchman    MiaFerrer
20:17:22 Webmama_Tina woops
20:17:26 Electra375 Did that ? come through clearly enough
20:17:39 Linda_Palmer Yes --- the tests are almost always negative before age two years
20:17:45 Electra375 he's 3 1/2
20:17:46 Webmama_Tina angie was next...but that's ok, he can go after you electra. :)
20:17:48 Linda_Palmer and after that -- I'd give them about 50
20:17:53 Linda_Palmer percent accuracy
20:17:58 TurboClaudia ?
20:18:05 Electra375 I feel better thank you
20:18:17 Linda_Palmer The upper airway allergies/IgE tests usually show more than the intestinal allergies
20:18:22 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :)"
20:18:36 Linda_Palmer IgG is better for intestinal type, but still very unreliable --- unfortunately
20:19:00 Electra375 they didn't run my request for IgG test
20:19:01 Webmama_Tina angie is our queue-keeper and she will let y'all know when its your turn to talk to linda...right now electra has the floor with linda...
20:19:29 Linda_Palmer Well, it's not going to help much anyway. Go by your own observations
20:19:43 Linda_Palmer What kinds of responses does she have?
20:20:04 Linda_Palmer I'm sorry --- he --- and you said rash.
20:20:07 Electra375 They ran a RAST test to things not done on the skin test and they ran tTg.  Our ped right now thinks that my ds has CD regardless of the test
20:20:29 Linda_Palmer That could end up as intestinal (H-2 receptor) type or upper airway type (H-1 receptor)

20:20:54 Electra375 not sure what that means
20:21:14 Linda_Palmer Celiac disease --- best to follow the gluten-free diet for now. In the future, maybe age 3 or 5
20:21:26 Linda_Palmer you may want to test again for the specific celiac stuff
20:21:55 Linda_Palmer It's helpful if you get positives (if they're needing to avoid) because again you'll have something
20:22:12 Electra375 That is what we are doing as of 2 1/2 wks ago.  GF, the dietician suggest diary free as well, we'll have to see.  He is a very picky eater and under weight big time -- calories are high in dairy
20:22:16 Linda_Palmer that is recognized by medical doctors andyou'll have fewer challenges dealing with the world
20:22:50 Linda_Palmer Know though that if child has been avoiding the gluten very well, the blood tests will be negative unless you introduce gluten several times before testing
20:23:20 Linda_Palmer I almost never see anyone with food allergies, besides the peanut and shellfish ones, that is not allergic to dairy
20:23:44 z2akids Hi all.  So - what happened to the cloth chat - isn't it Wednesday's around 9?
20:23:49 Linda_Palmer I would always start by avoiding dairy --- it can otherwise muddy-up the picture and make it impossible for you to tell what else child is reacting to
20:23:50 Electra375 we're scheduled to meet w a gastro guy for genetic screening in a month, I feel fortunate at this point that the ped is not saying gluten challenge and has written a nutrition consultation with the words diagnosis Celiac Disease
20:24:11 Webmama_Tina z2akids nope, its 5pm pacific/8pm eastern
