20:02:20 Webmama_Tina ok and today we are very lucky to have linda palmer as our guest speaker!
20:02:25 Webmama_Tina linda why don't you introduce yourself?
20:02:38 Webmama_Tina tell us a little about your background and expertise and anything else you want to share...
20:02:42 Linda_Palmer I'm retired DC -- after the birth of my son
20:02:59 Linda_Palmer I found that pediatric advice was often far from helpful and sometimes harmful
20:03:08 Linda_Palmer verydifferent from science research
20:03:08 Webmama_Tina and mamas, you can start throwing out your question marks (not questions, just the marks, please) at any time and angie will tell you when its your turn to ask linda your question :)
20:03:25 Webmama_Tina and don't mind me as i do my welcome here and there for latecomers
20:03:31 Linda_Palmer I was astounded at the amount of research available and how it differed from common pediatric advice...
20:03:43 TurboClaudia DC == Doctor of Chiropractic ???
20:03:51 Linda_Palmer Eventually came my writing of the book Baby Matters""
20:04:09 Linda_Palmer Yes, Doctor of Chiro -- I practiced for 11 years focusing on nutrition and women's issues
20:04:31 Linda_Palmer Rest of the book title: What your doctor may not tell you about caring for your baby""
20:04:55 Linda_Palmer 1100 science journal refs among the thousands refs that the book is based upon
20:05:34 Linda_Palmer I do lots of nutritional counseling --- breastfeeding and food allergies and colic and some necessary formula supplementers too (like adoptive moms)
20:06:12 maltagirl ?
20:06:30 Linda_Palmer I've also focussed heavily on attachment parenting issues such as co-sleeping and how their is a huge difference in all of theses between science based evidence and industry based disinformation.
20:06:38 Linda_Palmer Yes.
20:06:54 Linda_Palmer Yes maltagirl
20:06:55 maltagirl I'm here to learn more about food allergies in breastfed babies, especially allergies that are non IgE mediated
20:07:01 Webmama_Tina are you ready for your first question? oh i guess you are, lol
20:07:13 maltagirl my daughter has a severe peanut allergy
20:07:18 Webmama_Tina they will be throwing out question marks to get in line to ask a question...just FYI linda. :)
20:07:27 maltagirl but it doesn't show up on any tests
20:07:36 Linda_Palmer UNfortunately, the tests available are not very valuable. You need to go by what you observe.
20:07:52 maltagirl we know because she had anaphylaxis and any nuts I eat give her a rash around her mouth after she nurses
20:08:03 Linda_Palmer Your observations are far more valuable than anything else
20:08:09 maltagirl I'm avoiding nuts and other allergens so my son (also nursing) isn't exposed
20:08:29 Linda_Palmer Is that her only food problem?? GOod idea on the son.
20:08:35 maltagirl my pediatrician knows nothing about any of this and it
20:08:41 maltagirl sorry -- it's very frustrating
20:08:58 maltagirl Anna has a bad dairy sensitivity really early on
20:09:03 Linda_Palmer Peanut allergies are so very common and these are at least medically accepted. It's too bad your ped doesn't know about it
20:09:18 Linda_Palmer You shoudl be able to find someone who does in terms of the anaphylactic allergies
20:09:31 maltagirl in her first few weeks I saw blood in her diapers and suspected a milk allergy because when I quit cow's milk, she was a different baby
20:09:54 maltagirl but the ped tried to tell me she was overfed" (which isn't common in a breastfed baby) and that I should schedule her"
20:09:57 Linda_Palmer Now the dairy, that's a way different story in terms of medical acknowledgement. They've been educated by formula companies and dairy industry and that's all the info they have.
20:10:20 maltagirl my gut said that was wrong so I went completely off dairy.  Turns out I was allergic, too (I felt great off the cow juice)
20:10:28 sarahariz ?
20:10:37 Linda_Palmer I'm so sorry for the ped's attitude and ignorance (did I say that word? -- please find a gentler one for me
20:10:45 sandrin Mothering_Mag
20:10:57 maltagirl I have a known allergy to eggs, as well, and shellfish but noe ever told me to avoid allergens while breastfeeding
20:11:05 Linda_Palmer GO BY YOUR GUT!!! AND IGNORE THE REST
20:11:11 Webmama_Tina you made it sandrin :)
20:11:14 Linda_Palmer I can already see that you're going to do just fine with this issue.
20:11:14 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. 20:11:27 maltagirl Anna had her first peanut butter just after she turned 1 and it was a very scary situation
20:11:33 MiaFerrer I would find a better Doc if i were you
20:11:46 maltagirl I'm in the Army and get what I get -- no real choices
20:12:13 Linda_Palmer You won't find a better doc in terms of the dairy --- but your peanut child may need an epi-pen and you'll need to consult an allergist
20:12:20 Linda_Palmer and hope they recognize it
20:12:36 maltagirl the allergist was cool about writing us notes to let us decide what Anna eats, but was not very informative about the results of the allergy tests that were totally negative
20:12:46 maltagirl We have epi-pens everywhere Anna goes
20:13:03 Linda_Palmer oh my... hopefully you can keep her alive until she's old enough for it to show up on blood tests. Many things never do, but peanuts usually will.
20:13:20 Linda_Palmer Oh, well that's good.
20:13:23 maltagirl I read that one in five outgrows the allergy -- when is a good age to challenge and test?
20:14:07 Linda_Palmer Peanut allergies are far less commonly outgrown than other allergies. I'd wait until age 5 to try --- before Kindergarten so you know how much challenge you'll be up against.
20:14:24 Linda_Palmer If it's anaphylactic though, you might want to try in a doctor's office.
20:14:47 maltagirl thanks!  we will wait until then and do it at the clinic
20:14:53 Electra375 ?
20:15:12 Linda_Palmer AAlso know that the first exposure might be not elicit a response, but the body might then remember it's chosen allergy and make antibodies that will be there waiting for days or weeks for a second exposure --- which could then be very bad
20:15:12 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):  MOD_Angie    Electra375
20:15:36 Linda_Palmer Another question?
20:15:40 maltagirl I think ANna's first exposure was actually to almond milk
20:16:02 sandrin ?
20:16:04 janicemarchman ?
20:16:09 MiaFerrer ?
20:16:11 Linda_Palmer So some are only peanut-allergic and some to many/most/all nuts and even peach skins and such
20:16:33 Electra375 My son came back neg to allergy blood test age 3 1/2.  He had a skin reaction at church to playing with and inhaling Rye bread.  He is also now on a GF diet waiting for an offical Celiac Disease diagnosis.  Long story, but finally a doctor to listen to me
20:16:44 Linda_Palmer Sandrin -- your question?? ANd who said they had one before her -- I forgot?
20:16:49 Linda_Palmer Oh, Electra, fine
20:16:50 Electra375 that something was wrong.  Is it normal for children to not show up on
20:16:58 sandrin my son was exposed to fish and had a rash, how long should i wait
20:17:00 Electra375 RAST allergy test as positive
20:17:05 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): MOD_Angie   Electra375   sarahariz   sandrin    janicemarchman    MiaFerrer
20:17:22 Webmama_Tina woops
20:17:26 Electra375 Did that ? come through clearly enough
20:17:39 Linda_Palmer Yes --- the tests are almost always negative before age two years
20:17:45 Electra375 he's 3 1/2
20:17:46 Webmama_Tina angie was next...but that's ok, he can go after you electra. :)
20:17:48 Linda_Palmer and after that -- I'd give them about 50
20:17:53 Linda_Palmer percent accuracy
20:17:58 TurboClaudia ?
20:18:05 Electra375 I feel better thank you
20:18:17 Linda_Palmer The upper airway allergies/IgE tests usually show more than the intestinal allergies
20:18:22 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :)"
20:18:36 Linda_Palmer IgG is better for intestinal type, but still very unreliable --- unfortunately
20:19:00 Electra375 they didn't run my request for IgG test
20:19:01 Webmama_Tina angie is our queue-keeper and she will let y'all know when its your turn to talk to linda...right now electra has the floor with linda...
20:19:29 Linda_Palmer Well, it's not going to help much anyway. Go by your own observations
20:19:43 Linda_Palmer What kinds of responses does she have?
20:20:04 Linda_Palmer I'm sorry --- he --- and you said rash.
20:20:07 Electra375 They ran a RAST test to things not done on the skin test and they ran tTg.  Our ped right now thinks that my ds has CD regardless of the test
20:20:29 Linda_Palmer That could end up as intestinal (H-2 receptor) type or upper airway type (H-1 receptor)
20:20:37 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. Please make sure you read and fully understand the Moderated Chat Instructions before participating in this chat. 20:20:54 Electra375 not sure what that means
20:21:14 Linda_Palmer Celiac disease --- best to follow the gluten-free diet for now. In the future, maybe age 3 or 5
20:21:26 Linda_Palmer you may want to test again for the specific celiac stuff
20:21:55 Linda_Palmer It's helpful if you get positives (if they're needing to avoid) because again you'll have something
20:22:12 Electra375 That is what we are doing as of 2 1/2 wks ago.  GF, the dietician suggest diary free as well, we'll have to see.  He is a very picky eater and under weight big time -- calories are high in dairy
20:22:16 Linda_Palmer that is recognized by medical doctors andyou'll have fewer challenges dealing with the world
20:22:50 Linda_Palmer Know though that if child has been avoiding the gluten very well, the blood tests will be negative unless you introduce gluten several times before testing
20:23:20 Linda_Palmer I almost never see anyone with food allergies, besides the peanut and shellfish ones, that is not allergic to dairy
20:23:44 z2akids Hi all.  So - what happened to the cloth chat - isn't it Wednesday's around 9?
20:23:49 Linda_Palmer I would always start by avoiding dairy --- it can otherwise muddy-up the picture and make it impossible for you to tell what else child is reacting to
20:23:50 Electra375 we're scheduled to meet w a gastro guy for genetic screening in a month, I feel fortunate at this point that the ped is not saying gluten challenge and has written a nutrition consultation with the words diagnosis Celiac Disease
20:24:11 Webmama_Tina z2akids nope, its 5pm pacific/8pm eastern
20:24:21 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. 20:24:27 z2akids oops.
20:24:34 Linda_Palmer That's a good thing for now --- and later you can always easily have that diagnosis changed or removed from records.
20:25:05 Linda_Palmer Another Q?
20:25:07 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): sarahariz   MOD_Angie  sandrin   janicemarchman   MiaFerrer   TurboClaudia
20:25:14 sarahariz my exclusively breastfed daughter had ezcema that we traced to dairy in my diet.  Also, she had a contact hives reaction to getting yogurt on her face.  Is this a true" dairy allergy? or what does this mean?"
20:25:55 Linda_Palmer Well, sometimes eczema can be related to upper airway type allergies or intestinal
20:25:58 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :)"
20:26:12 Webmama_Tina :)
20:26:13 Linda_Palmer You'll know by other symptoms. Any diarrhea, colic?
20:26:37 Linda_Palmer The hives make it sound more like the upper airway type that, when very bad, can lead to anaphylaxis
20:26:43 sarahariz well, I would say no.  She is 14 mo old now, and I haven't given her dairy to eat
20:26:46 Linda_Palmer This is the type they call a true" allergy"
20:27:04 Linda_Palmer Well, don't do it just to see
20:27:12 sarahariz oh, even though the hives came, not from eating it, but just getting it on her skin?
20:27:28 Linda_Palmer Yes, that's a more IgE - mediated reaction
20:27:48 sarahariz oh, at some point do I need to get it officailly tested...
20:27:49 Webmama_Tina woops, i stand corrected...cloth diaper chat is tomorrow, not today, lol
20:27:54 sarahariz by an allergist?
20:28:15 Linda_Palmer Well, it seems like the type that should show up with allergy testing. Even as young as she is
20:28:25 Linda_Palmer the scratch/skin test should show positive
20:28:33 Linda_Palmer because it already did --- in your home
20:28:39 sarahariz is it worth doing for any reason?
20:29:08 Linda_Palmer The main reasons for laboratory testing are to prove to in-laws or doctors or others who are pushing your buttons
20:29:23 Linda_Palmer or who you fear may not believe you and may sneak things to your child and harm child
20:29:38 sarahariz ok, thank you, I don't want to traumatize her unnecessarily!
20:29:47 Linda_Palmer otherwise, you know what you know way better than anyone seeing the child for a few minutes possibly could
20:30:06 sarahariz thank you for your answer!
20:30:16 Linda_Palmer I would do that testing if she's still getting that kind of responses when she's age 3 to 5.
20:30:30 sarahariz Is that when I should try giving her some?
20:30:39 Linda_Palmer I know you won't be giving her dairy, but, as she gets older, youo'll see that there are always teh accidental exposures
20:30:53 maltagirl I am TERRIFIED to leave my mother-in-law alone with my kid for that very reason -- she doesn't buy the allergy thing.
20:30:58 sarahariz that makes sense
20:31:00 Linda_Palmer when you didn't know that there was whey in the margarine in Aunt Clara's cookies
20:31:23 sarahariz she doesn't seem to react to butter
20:31:28 Linda_Palmer Yes, that is a much greater disturbance and challenge than dealing with the actual allergies
20:31:32 sarahariz more like if I drink milk
20:31:50 Linda_Palmer Butter has only a small amount of milk protein in it --- it may be below her threshold
20:32:08 Linda_Palmer but keep in mind the dose-dependent idea if you decide to eat a stick of butter
20:32:11 Linda_Palmer ha ha
20:32:16 sarahariz and of course, I don't eat butter without heating it-cooking it
20:32:25 Linda_Palmer or see if there's a problem with you using it days in a row
20:32:36 sarahariz :<  lol  lol
20:32:37 Linda_Palmer Clarified butter should have only very slight traces.
20:32:56 sarahariz thank you!
20:32:57 maltagirl clarified butter=ghee?
20:33:00 Linda_Palmer I would use that --- to keep her from getting continually sensitized even though she's not reacting outwardly
20:33:13 sarahariz oh, I hadn't thought about that
20:33:19 Linda_Palmer Yes, then you can try being more slack when you're out and about and see if that works OK or not
20:33:26 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s):   MOD_Angie    sandrin   janicemarchman   MiaFerrer   TurboClaudia
20:33:36 Linda_Palmer cheese and yogurt are partially digested milk protein
20:33:44 Linda_Palmer some can tolerate them better
20:33:59 Linda_Palmer but it's best to try to avoid as well as you can so you do not kkep the child sensitized
20:34:07 Linda_Palmer she'll have a better chance of growing out of it that way
20:34:10 sarahariz that is good to know!
20:34:22 Linda_Palmer and she'll be less likely to have a bad reaction if she gets accidentally exposed
20:34:38 Linda_Palmer Another Q?
20:34:40 MOD_Angie May I ask a chiropractic question?
20:34:45 Linda_Palmer Yes
20:34:52 MOD_Angie I fell and broke my coccyx this spring on the ice, and now it is sticking straight out like a tail.  I started seeing a chiropractor a month ago, and I was wondering what your thought were on this.  If it doesn’t get straighten out, will I have trouble during childbirth?  I am planning a homebirth since I don’t want to risk another c-section after already having 2 prior c-sections.
20:35:14 Linda_Palmer You won't have trouble during birht
20:35:20 Linda_Palmer it's actually more out of the way now
20:35:37 Linda_Palmer you'll be uncomfortable sitting back on it the way they make you lie in the hospital during birht
20:35:43 MOD_Angie that is what I was thinking, and my DR actually mentioned that today, but I can't stand the pain
20:35:47 MOD_Angie it hurts so bad
20:35:54 Linda_Palmer well, that's bad
20:36:01 Linda_Palmer I hope doc can help
20:36:21 Linda_Palmer it's a difficult thing to get healed right without re-breaking it and going into a body cast
20:36:31 Linda_Palmer it's been done, but only after a year or two of other efforts
20:36:53 MOD_Angie we did notice my Xray that my lower back is slighty curved, and I was wondering and so was he if thought have caused my 2 breech babies (last one did get turned by the Webster Technique)
20:36:54 Linda_Palmer a tens unit may help some
20:37:13 Linda_Palmer curved the wrong way I guess you mean
20:37:22 Linda_Palmer no one can say for sure but could have influenced
20:37:22 MOD_Angie that*
20:37:23 MOD_Angie yes
20:37:35 MOD_Angie I get the TENS every visit, it is so nice!
20:37:42 Linda_Palmer Get a TENS at home
20:37:47 MOD_Angie how much are they?
20:37:49 Linda_Palmer use it a lot
20:37:53 MOD_Angie I want one during labor!
20:38:07 Linda_Palmer well, chiro can buy one for under $150 but they'd charge you more
20:38:15 Linda_Palmer You might be able to get one on E-bay --- I don't know
20:38:24 Linda_Palmer I guess they're supposed to be regulated
20:38:28 MOD_Angie oh
20:38:35 Linda_Palmer Sometimes they're even under $90
20:38:44 MOD_Angie I think I have a good relationship with my chiro that maybe I could ask him
20:38:51 Linda_Palmer See what you can find --- see what DC will do for you first
20:38:56 angcac1969 I have always trusted that my daughter knows her body and what it needs.  she has never liked complex flavors like recipes with a lot of ingredients.  she is almost three and still nursing a bit.  she doesn't like a lot of sugar and is not into carbs.
20:39:00 MOD_Angie ok ty
20:39:11 Linda_Palmer it won't be very effective during bad parts of labor --- it's a mild effect
20:39:21 angcac1969 I am not sure what to feed her.  I guess I am a little behind... new to chats...
20:39:43 MOD_Angie a little is better than none ;-)
20:40:09 Linda_Palmer well if she's not into sugar and carbs, it's hard for you to lose feeding her otherwise
20:40:16 MOD_Angie Come join us for this week's Mothering Magazine sponsored chat in the Mothering_Mag room. 20:40:41 sandrin My son was exposed to fish at 9 month and he had a rash we tried again at 11 months again but worst eash, how long should we wait? What test shall we give him ?
20:40:56 Linda_Palmer give her simple fruits --- and first the veggies ---
20:41:01 Linda_Palmer son with fish rash
20:41:02 babybizcochan ?
20:41:08 angcac1969 true.  there seems to be no method
20:41:12 MOD_Angie please wait for your name to appear in the chat queue
20:41:13 sandrin yeah
20:41:18 Linda_Palmer It's very likely he'll have fish sensitivity all his life
20:41:33 angcac1969 ok, i'll try that.  she likes broccoli!
20:41:44 Linda_Palmer there's still reason to try. Big ages for growing out are 2 years, 5 years, 7 years
20:41:45 sandrin at home we don't eat other kind of meat:(
20:42:00 Linda_Palmer after that they usually give-up but my kid grew out of his worst stuff at age 9
20:42:23 sandrin ok
20:42:30 mommymuse ?
20:42:31 Linda_Palmer walnuts will provide good omega-3's if not doing fish
20:42:31 sandrin shall we give him test?
20:42:51 angcac1969 aren't walnuts acidic?
20:42:51 Linda_Palmer no real reason to test until you find a reason to
20:42:59 sandrin he is almost a year old can he eat nuts already?
20:43:04 Linda_Palmer what is your ocncern with the acidic?
20:43:33 Linda_Palmer after 12 months OK to try walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts (the least allergenic)
20:43:37 angcac1969 well, i was wondering about being more alkaline, more balanced.  so many of our foods are acidic...
20:43:51 Linda_Palmer you can also give spirulina or he might be fine with fish-oil tablets
20:44:12 Linda_Palmer well, yes I've heard that theory

20:44:28 angcac1969 but i love walnuts!
20:44:28 Linda_Palmer but it's more for people suffering from arthiritis or chronic yeast or such
20:44:47 Linda_Palmer Omega-3's are an important part of trying to reduce or grow-out of foood allergies
20:44:50 angcac1969 yes, and that is me.  i have dealt with yeast etc...
20:44:51 Linda_Palmer and other allergies
20:44:51 sandrin he has had some other reaction bite looking" kind of"
20:45:02 sandrin i am not shure to what...
20:45:09 Linda_Palmer hmmm
20:45:21 Linda_Palmer that'll take some sleuthing
20:45:33 Linda_Palmer another question?
20:45:39 janicemarchman May I ask you an attachment parenting question?  Or do you want to stick to nutrition and body stuff?
20:45:48 Linda_Palmer AP is my bag!!!
20:45:53 angcac1969 any new information you can share?
20:45:55 sandrin sleuthin?
20:45:55 Webmama_Tina mamas...we have a line...please post a single question mark if you have a question
20:45:56 janicemarchman Sweet I thought so
20:46:02 janicemarchman Have you ever compared babywise and attachment parenting?  I am an attached parent of a 2 yr old, but my very pregnant friend seems to think babywise is more her style.  It may be.  But, I know intuitively that I like to wear my child, breastfed

20:46:18 janicemarchman my son until he was 2, and we co-slept for the first 10 months.  I also stay at home.  my friend will be a working Mom and seems to think that babywise is the only way to go for a working Mom.  I know that's not the case, but I am trying to come up with
20:46:19 sandrin ok
20:46:29 janicemarchman some scientific proof that attachment parenting is better for the baby and young child and then adult than a detached method of raising kids.  They are all-natural parents - this is just strange.
20:46:32 sandrin thanks linda
20:46:33 Webmama_Tina :)
20:46:56 Linda_Palmer OKwell,
20:47:16 Linda_Palmer half my book is the solid science that supports AP practices
20:47:27 janicemarchman ok I need to get that sorry - I will read it
20:47:28 Linda_Palmer You can see many supportive articles on my site www.babyreference.com
20:47:36 Linda_Palmer the science is behind cosleeping
20:47:38 janicemarchman I tend to get emotional about it because I believe so strongly in it
20:47:58 Linda_Palmer even though the media and formula/baby furniture industry twist the results into the opposite
20:48:16 Linda_Palmer that's because it's in your blood, in your bones, in your genes, in your hormones,
20:48:28 janicemarchman SIDS and everything - yeah
20:48:34 Linda_Palmer it's been imprinted into your brain by the hormones that come from nursing and holding and it can't be changed
20:48:40 maltagirl just a thought, a lot of parents THINK they know how they're going to parent their babies until the baby actually comes and things like Babywise actually cause physical distress for the parents!
20:49:14 Linda_Palmer If the parents are successful from the start in avoiding bonding
20:49:28 Linda_Palmer then they may never get the hormonal reconfiguration in their brains
20:49:36 MamaKT ?
20:49:37 Linda_Palmer but if they give-in a little to baby's powerful messages
20:49:43 janicemarchman thanks for the website - I will check it out  - and I believe you - at all levels in my body and mind I know it is right for me - I hope they change their tune
20:49:52 Linda_Palmer then they may turn into the real AP parents that baby deserves
20:50:09 janicemarchman I hope they do just that.  All babies deserve attached parents
20:50:18 Linda_Palmer they may not be able to change if they were not breastfed and affectionately treated as babies themselves
20:50:26 Linda_Palmer I assure you Dr. Phil was not breastfed
20:50:30 Webmama_Tina ROFL
20:50:33 MiaFerrer LOL
20:50:36 Linda_Palmer Did I say that?? : )
20:50:45 janicemarchman dad was - i talked with his mom at their baby shower
20:50:46 janicemarchman FUNNY!!!
20:50:56 Webmama_Tina who's next angie?
20:51:01 Webmama_Tina 10min left in the caht
20:51:02 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): MiaFerrer   TurboClaudia   babybizcochan   mommymuse  MamaKT
20:51:03 Webmama_Tina chat
20:51:10 MiaFerrer are you ready for me?
20:51:15 Linda_Palmer yes
20:51:19 Webmama_Tina looks like it mia...go for it!
20:51:41 MiaFerrer I am won dering about drinking wine while breast feeding
20:51:54 MiaFerrer i have friends who say its okay, but i dunno what's the deal witht hat
20:51:56 Linda_Palmer in small amounts it's not supposed to be too bad
20:52:04 Linda_Palmer I wouldn't do any during pregnancy though
20:52:22 MiaFerrer also.... i have a friend who smoked marijuana while she was breastfeeding....
20:52:24 Linda_Palmer I'd keep it to a minimum but your sanity may be more important
20:52:25 Webmama_Tina At this time, the queue is full. Questions already in line will be asked, but we cannot take anymore today. Sorry for the inconvenience.
20:52:32 MiaFerrer i am very concerned about it
20:52:39 MiaFerrer what are the effects????
20:52:40 Linda_Palmer I wouldn't smoke drugs
20:52:44 Linda_Palmer while nursing
20:52:50 Linda_Palmer there's not enough research about the pot
20:53:00 Linda_Palmer but I'd say no until knowing otherwise
20:53:09 Linda_Palmer we know it is cancer causing
20:53:20 MiaFerrer That's what i thought... i didnt want to lecture her, but i had no proof
20:53:22 Linda_Palmer not the lungs from smoking, but in the body
20:53:42 MiaFerrer how?
20:53:45 Linda_Palmer well, it's her choice I guess and it hopefully won't be too bad --- at least the baby is nursing
20:54:01 Linda_Palmer sometiems the mom can get frustrated by all the advice and go even farther in that direction
20:54:22 Linda_Palmer like me deciding to breastfeed my baby everywhere , all the time, and as old as he got
20:54:31 Linda_Palmer is there another question
20:54:35 MiaFerrer yeah.... I think her baby is okay... he's really smart, so i didnt know what to say her her... i just kept my mouth shut
20:54:54 MiaFerrer but i like to drink wine, and my baby is not born yet, and i wanted to make sure before she is born
20:55:01 Webmama_Tina there are still 4 questions and only 6min left
20:55:05 Linda_Palmer it could lead to his own predilection for addiction later in life but...
20:55:12 Webmama_Tina do you need to leave right at the hour linda/
20:55:13 Webmama_Tina ?
20:55:16 Webmama_Tina its entirely up to you
20:55:20 MiaFerrer thank you
20:55:22 Linda_Palmer no i do not need to leave
20:55:32 Webmama_Tina sorry that wasn't me asking to be put in the queue angie, lol
20:55:41 Linda_Palmer the younger the fetus, the more potentially ddamaging the alcohol
20:55:55 Webmama_Tina ok so we can finish up the last ones then. thanks!! :)
20:55:57 MOD_Angie from a LLL leader........you can tell the mom that THC (found in Marijuana) shows up in the baby's urine for 3 weeks, so she will be risking a lot if blood tests were ever taken
20:56:01 Linda_Palmer a little bit in older fetus may not be too bad, but one sure wouldn't want ot recommend it
20:56:27 Linda_Palmer good comment Angie
20:56:33 Linda_Palmer Another question?
20:56:36 TurboClaudia for common allergen foods & a family history (my partner's entire family except him exhibit food allergies & my mom, sister and I all exhibit auto-immune issues), what schedule of food introductions would you recommend for a baby/toddler?
20:56:55 MOD_Angie alcohol peaks in the milk 30-60 minutes after drinking and 60-90 with food, so wine with dinner is ok
20:57:00 Linda_Palmer oh boy, with this history offood
20:57:08 TurboClaudia i'm specifically thinking of cow dairy, tomatoes, tree nuts, soy
20:57:16 Linda_Palmer of food allergies, you need to go very slowly
20:57:22 TurboClaudia oh, and citrus
20:57:31 Linda_Palmer no nuts, no citrus
20:57:41 Linda_Palmer no egg, absolutely no dairy
20:57:48 TurboClaudia they are weird food allergies, though. shellfish, tree nuts, tomatoes, blueberries, chocolate
20:57:59 Linda_Palmer I would try the soy, because it can be such a great substitute if it works
20:58:04 TurboClaudia our son is almost 16 months old
20:58:11 maltagirl those aren't so weird, actually!
20:58:19 Linda_Palmer the actual foods that one reacts to will be different froom family member to member
20:58:30 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): TurboClaudia babybizcochan mommymuse MamaKT
20:58:32 Linda_Palmer even though the predilection will be there
20:58:55 Webmama_Tina :)
20:59:26 Linda_Palmer Turbo??
20:59:40 TurboClaudia yes...???
20:59:48 Linda_Palmer did you have a quesion
20:59:53 Linda_Palmer who's next??
21:00:08 babybizcochan sorry i haven't read your book.  but i was wondering what you think about Dr. Tom Brewer's Pregnancy Diet?
21:00:08 mommymuse My second child is 10 weeks old and nursing exclusively.  When I ate peanut butter sandwiches, she broke out in baby acne".  Even almond butter seemed to have an effect, so have switched to pumpkin seed butter.  I'm wondering if this means she may have a"
21:00:13 TurboClaudia what schedule of food introductions for a 16 month old?
21:00:13 Webmama_Tina i think you got her already....next is.....
21:00:17 Webmama_Tina ther she is
21:00:28 Webmama_Tina ack i just got peed on...argh
21:00:31 Webmama_Tina brb
21:00:42 mommymuse lifelong propensity to nut allergies? - sorry - jumped in too soon.
21:00:42 TurboClaudia i mean when would you recommend we give him those foods to see if he has a reaction?>
21:00:43 Linda_Palmer sorry don't know about Brewer's diet --- you could ask me specific questions --
21:00:55 Linda_Palmer but I'll take turbo
21:01:10 Linda_Palmer yes, wait at least until age two
21:01:19 babybizcochan how much protein should a woman eat during pregnancy?
21:01:22 Linda_Palmer that's a good age for certain immune system development to complete
21:01:25 TurboClaudia ok, thanks
21:01:35 Linda_Palmer but you can go earlier on a couple things if you really want to know
21:01:54 Webmama_Tina back
21:02:00 Linda_Palmer I know that Bradley says 100 grams
21:02:03 TurboClaudia we are definitely going to wait on the shellfish and the nuts
21:02:07 Linda_Palmer that's on the high end
21:02:10 TurboClaudia thanks, linda.
21:02:13 Linda_Palmer but not too much
21:02:30 babybizcochan Thanks.   Bradley uses Dr. Brewer's diet
21:02:33 Linda_Palmer but even 70 might be enough
21:02:39 Linda_Palmer oh
21:02:49 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :)"
21:02:58 Linda_Palmer Well, Bradley guy (forgot his name) and I had it out a bit over his love of dairy
21:03:10 Linda_Palmer I gave him lots of info about dangers of dairy and he didn't like that
21:03:11 Webmama_Tina i know we're almost done mamas, but lets not start going all crazy here talking out of turn....lol
21:03:19 babybizcochan That's what I am curious about
21:03:28 Linda_Palmer other than that --- he's very right on with most of his advice
21:03:34 Webmama_Tina i believe it is currently  babybizcochan's turn
21:03:36 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): babybizcochan   mommymuse   MamaKT
21:03:59 Linda_Palmer I would go lightly on the dairy though
21:04:19 Linda_Palmer and get a lot of your meat organic or pesticide free at least
21:04:27 babybizcochan how light?  they suggest four servings a day
21:04:40 Linda_Palmer Well, I wouldnt' do that,
21:04:49 Linda_Palmer but tha'ts me
21:05:01 Linda_Palmer I was very pro-dairy before I wrote that chapter in my book
21:05:10 babybizcochan thanks, i look forward to reading your book.
21:05:12 Linda_Palmer It's incredible all the potential problems with dairy
21:05:35 Linda_Palmer it'd take me an hour for that
21:05:49 Linda_Palmer it's linked to eclampsia for one
21:06:09 Linda_Palmer study shows that 3 or more servings per day will greatly increase your chances of developo8ng eclampsia
21:06:21 Linda_Palmer that's the high blood pressure problem some women develop during pregnancy
21:06:26 Linda_Palmer don't do raw milk for sure
21:06:34 Linda_Palmer do organic when you do milk
21:06:48 Linda_Palmer more questions?
21:06:52 angcac1969 ?
21:06:52 Webmama_Tina mommymuse
21:06:57 Webmama_Tina you're up!
21:07:01 Linda_Palmer yes mommy?
21:07:03 mommymuse YEs, I was asking about nut allergies
21:07:06 babybizcochan that's interesting b/c Dr. Brewer has said that with his diet there is less chance of eclampsia
21:07:11 MOD_Angie upcoming chatter(s): mommymuse   MamaKT
21:07:28 mommymuse If my breastfed 10 week old has a reaction to peanut butter and even almonds, what does that mean for her lifelong propensity?
21:07:30 Linda_Palmer I wonder if they have a study about that to cite?
21:07:41 Linda_Palmer It may not look good
21:07:42 Webmama_Tina angcac1969 our queue is now closed, sorry....we could, i'm sure, go on all nite with questions for the good dr...but we need to wrap it up at some point. :)
21:08:02 Linda_Palmer but there's a good chance of growing out
21:08:12 Linda_Palmer I wouldn't bother toying with other nuts right now
21:08:12 mommymuse Are there any nuts that you would recommend trying and at what age?
21:08:23 Linda_Palmer you might watch for peach skins and siimilar
21:08:27 Linda_Palmer well, try hazelnut
21:08:35 Linda_Palmer that's the lowest on thel alelrgy scale
21:08:39 Linda_Palmer if that goes alright
21:08:46 Linda_Palmer then maybe go for pecan
21:08:54 mommymuse Also, we hav emilk goats for out milk - does that tend to do better for little ones than cows?
21:09:00 Linda_Palmer walnuts are my favorite for their omega-3's
21:09:23 Linda_Palmer often one who's allergic to cow's milk will do OK with goat at first
21:09:33 Linda_Palmer but then eventually develoop sensitivity to it as well
21:09:43 Linda_Palmer it's only less common allergy because it's less commonly consumed
21:09:47 mommymuse Good to know!  Thanks for your help.
21:09:54 Linda_Palmer the same components are in it that can cause allergy
21:10:04 Linda_Palmer but the there are those who cannot have any dairy and are fine with goat
21:10:09 Webmama_Tina last question from MamaKT! :)
21:10:12 MamaKT My husband and I both have personal and family histories of food allergies and severe excema.  Should I still start my 5mo son on solids around 6mo, or is it better to wait longer in order to avoid intolerances?
21:10:38 Linda_Palmer WEll, I personally believe that there's no need to start at 6 months
21:10:48 Linda_Palmer based upon my experience with many fmilies
21:10:51 MamaKT I've wondered about that
21:11:07 Linda_Palmer and the only research that says one needs to begin then is done on malnourished moms in India and such
21:11:19 Linda_Palmer YES need to start solids even earlier in formula fed thouog
21:11:28 Linda_Palmer but not if exclusively bf
21:11:32 Linda_Palmer but go by baby's messages
21:11:41 MamaKT He is only breastfed
21:11:43 Linda_Palmer some mistake desire to explore and teeth for desire to eat
21:11:55 Linda_Palmer that's a good opportunity to take advantage of in one who wants baby to eat
21:12:09 MamaKT I've thought about waiting until closer to 1yr
21:12:13 Linda_Palmer but see if that's what it is or if baby is really determined that she needs other foods
21:12:19 Linda_Palmer yes, I'd say that 12 monts is good
21:12:24 Linda_Palmer few go beyond that
21:12:43 Linda_Palmer my son was almost exclusively breaastfed for 27 months
21:12:53 MamaKT Wow!
21:12:54 Linda_Palmer not by choice, but because we couldn't find anything else he could tolerate
21:13:10 Linda_Palmer I assure you he's totally healthy and bright and coordinated and etc.
21:13:10 maltagirl wow is right!
21:13:32 Linda_Palmer I used to joke that I'd need to breastfeed him until he got a lactating girlfriend
21:13:40 Linda_Palmer actually, it was a worry, not a joke
21:13:45 MamaKT Isn't it hard to withstand pressure to start solids from other mothers?
21:13:54 Linda_Palmer but I loved grossing out alll those people with their rude questions about when I'm going to stop
21:14:03 Linda_Palmer yes it is
21:14:16 Linda_Palmer when you do start
21:14:21 Linda_Palmer do just one food at a time for day
21:14:28 Linda_Palmer for like 3 days I mean
21:14:37 Linda_Palmer and watch for any kind of signs/changes
21:14:50 Linda_Palmer once you decide a food is OK, you can keep it and start another
21:14:57 Linda_Palmer it's such a perfect time when the diet is so simple
21:15:12 Linda_Palmer be sure you aren't confusing foods in your diet with foods in the baby's diet
21:15:27 Linda_Palmer if things get hard to figure out, start out all over again with one food at a time
21:15:35 MamaKT okay
21:15:43 Linda_Palmer Is there more?
21:15:54 Webmama_Tina that should do it
21:15:55 MamaKT Thanks!
21:15:55 Webmama_Tina :)
21:16:05 Linda_Palmer Thanks all!!!! it was fun!!!
21:16:05 Webmama_Tina thank you SOOOOOOO much linda! this was AWESOME!!!
