13:04:31 Webmama_Tina ok today we are, as always, happy to have dr randall neustaedter!
13:04:39 Webmama_Tina here's the spiel on the chat today....
13:04:43 Webmama_Tina Are they getting enough nutrients? Do they need more calcium? Colic, reflux, constipation, and stomach aches are common problems in kids related to digestive function. Let's talk about your kids and their diets. What do they need and how can you be more successful in meeting those needs?
13:04:54 Webmama_Tina and the blurb on the good dr....

13:05:25 Webmama_Tina and i can personally vouch for the vaccine guide...i have it and have read most of it and it is VERY helpful and interesting!
13:05:36 Webmama_Tina ok dr, did you want to add anything?
13:06:06 RandallNeustaedter No that's great.
13:06:14 Webmama_Tina mamas, you can start posting single question marks to start the queue
13:06:17 dancerimma ?
13:06:22 Gwendolyn ?
13:06:22 Webmama_Tina ok dancer, you're first!
13:06:24 Webmama_Tina go for it
13:06:27 skrhythm ?
13:06:43 dancerimma Hi, Thanks.  I jus wanted some tips for avoiding flu this season..
13:07:08 dancerimma My dh works in a nursing home, and has to work the flu quarantine floor
13:07:12 Webmama_Tina current chatter: dancerimma ....upcoming chatters: Gwendolyn, skrhythm
13:07:48 dancerimma ds is only 20 mos, and I am 3 mos pg, and we don't get the shot.  Any ideas?
13:07:53 Webmama_Tina agh, as always i forgot to turn off the entrance/exits...sorry dr
13:07:55 Webmama_Tina i'll do that right now
13:08:02 RandallNeustaedter A bit off topic, so I would check out the previous transcripts of chats which dealt with this topic in excruciating detail. Also my bood FLU: Alternative Treatments and Prevention.
13:08:48 Webmama_Tina ok anyone that wants to make the entrances and exits go away, click refresh and log back in
13:09:13 Webmama_Tina dancer, past transcripts:
13:09:29 Webmama_Tina http://mommychats.com/mothering/index.htm
13:09:32 RandallNeustaedter I would not be afraid of viruses. It's only the flu anyway. I would give him colostrum, vit AandD, and a fish oil supplement at least.
13:09:40 Webmama_Tina and i'll see if i can find the link to one that specifically has flu info
13:10:10 dancerimma Thanks - I'll check the transcripts, and try those!
13:10:46 Gwendolyn My 17month is lactose intolerant. Discovered after 5 weeks of a loose acid poo and a terrible rash. We hae since changed to lactose free milk, but are so limited for him.  Do I need a probiotic for him , if so, which type? What other dairy can I give him?
13:11:19 RandallNeustaedter Why are you giving her milk?
13:11:58 Webmama_Tina current chatter:Gwendolyn....upcoming chatters: skrhythm
13:12:04 Gwendolyn Because the ped reccommends it and he loves it--its a he--I thought after 18 months it was okay
13:12:20 Gwendolyn For nutrition, I guess?
13:12:27 RandallNeustaedter Gwendolyn I don't recommend milk for babies until they are at least 24 months. So just stop it.
13:12:44 RandallNeustaedter Babies do not need milk from cows. They are humans.
13:12:59 Gwendolyn What about his excessive thirst for it?  and yogurt?
13:13:24 Gwendolyn What else should I give him?
13:13:32 bennersmom ?
13:13:41 RandallNeustaedter Babies at this age need veges, fruits, grains, eggs, beans, and other animal proteins. Not dairy products, especially if they are sensitive to it.
13:13:49 mum2Sarah ?
13:13:49 Webmama_Tina current chatter:Gwendolyn....upcoming chatters: skrhythm, bennersmom
13:13:50 RandallNeustaedter He should drink water.
13:14:13 RandallNeustaedter And sure a mixed probiotic would probably be helpful to resettle the digestive function.
13:14:21 Gwendolyn I was worried he would miss out on nutrients---what about rice or almond milk?
13:14:51 Gwendolyn Can you suggest a probiotic?
13:14:54 RandallNeustaedter Rice milk is mostly just carbohydrate. Not very nutritionally useful.
13:15:04 RandallNeustaedter I use Metagenics.
13:15:07 RandallNeustaedter next
13:15:10 skrhythm i've heard that probiotics are working well to take care of colicy babies?  i have acidophilus in my fridge is this what they are refering to?  and if so how do i give it to my son who is 4 months?
13:15:14 Gwendolyn thx
13:15:21 Webmama_Tina current chatter:skrhythm....upcoming chatters: bennersmom, mum2Sarah
13:16:49 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm If your baby is solely breastfeeding, then you should use a pure strain of bifidobacterium lactis.
13:17:05 RandallNeustaedter Again Metagenics is a good brand, but others are acceptable too.
13:17:27 sadieLake ?
13:17:31 RandallNeustaedter But probiotics alone will not adequately treat a colicky baby.
13:17:31 skrhythm purly breast fed what is bifidobact..........?
13:17:45 Webmama_Tina current chatter:skrhythm....upcoming chatters: bennersmom, mum2Sarah, sadieLake
13:18:17 RandallNeustaedter There are excellent treatments for colic and reflux symptoms, including acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and homeopathy.
13:18:48 skrhythm do you know off the top of your head what homeopathy?
13:19:10 hayday ?
13:19:14 RandallNeustaedter The homeopathic medicine depends on the symptoms and the individual picture in the baby.
13:19:27 skrhythm yes, ok thank you
13:19:36 RandallNeustaedter That said, Colocynth is the most commonly indicated remedy for colic.
13:19:38 RandallNeustaedter next
13:19:44 bennersmom I have a 5 month old who has had only breastmilk to this point.  We're planning to introduce solids after 6 months and have heard confliciting advice on what to introduce first.  Can you advise if rice cereal is really the best first thing to introduce?
13:19:48 Webmama_Tina current chatter: bennersmom....upcoming chatters: mum2Sarah, sadieLake, hayday
13:20:12 RandallNeustaedter Do not give rice cereal or any grains until 12 months.
13:20:25 bennersmom what would you recommend for solids?
13:20:33 RandallNeustaedter Begin with pureed veges, fruits, and egg yolk.
13:20:54 bennersmom Thank you.
13:21:05 RandallNeustaedter Babies can begin with tastes of food off your finger, then gradually increase the quantity they decide to swallow.
13:21:34 RandallNeustaedter This topic of introducing solids is discussed at length in my book, Child Health Guide.
13:21:35 RandallNeustaedter next
13:21:39 Webmama_Tina current chatter: mum2Sarah....upcoming chatters: sadieLake, hayday
13:21:40 mum2Sarah My 6-month-old daughter just started solids a few days ago. She has come down with her first cold this morning. My intuition tells me to go back to exclusive breast-feeding while she is under the weather. What do you advise?
13:21:45 KateDWJMERMJ ?
13:22:07 RandallNeustaedter Yes, give her system of break at this point. She does not need solids.
13:22:14 Webmama_Tina current chatter: mum2Sarah....upcoming chatters: sadieLake, hayday, KateDWJMERMJ
13:22:18 mum2Sarah Thank you!
13:22:25 RandallNeustaedter Babies will do fine with just breastmilk for 9 months.
13:22:26 RandallNeustaedter next
13:22:26 sadieLake my 81/2 mo daughter still gags on food so I haven't actually given her entire meals
13:22:53 Webmama_Tina current chatter: sadieLake....upcoming chatters: hayday, KateDWJMERMJ
13:23:05 sadieLake my question is, is there anything she's not getting from me that I NEED to be supplementing with food?
13:23:20 sadieLake She always seems to ge full from breast milk
13:23:25 RandallNeustaedter sadieLake Don't worry about it. Learning to swallow solid foods is a skill that babies learn gradually, and some faster than others.
13:23:54 sadieLake so should I continue to offer \meals\" or just bitefulls once in a while until she stops gagging?"
13:24:15 RandallNeustaedter Just make sure your baby is getting omega-3 fats and A and D. A half teaspoon of cod liver oil will do that, given to her through a dropper.
13:24:30 skrhythm ?
13:24:36 sadieLake even if I'm taking enough every day?
13:25:00 RandallNeustaedter I am not a big fan of meals for babies. Just like with breastfeeding, kids eat every 2-3 hours.
13:25:15 Webmama_Tina current chatter: sadieLake....upcoming chatters: hayday, KateDWJMERMJ, skrhythm
13:25:34 bennersmom ?
13:25:34 RandallNeustaedter If you are taking adequate levels of fish oil and she is getting some sun, then that probably covers it.
13:25:45 sadieLake thank you
13:26:11 Webmama_Tina current chatter: hayday....upcoming chatters: KateDWJMERMJ, skrhythm, bennersmom
13:26:14 hayday what is the daily recommended amount of calcium for a 6-year old and if a child is deficient, would there be any signs to look for?
13:26:22 RandallNeustaedter Usually pediatricians check babies for anemia at 9 months, which is a good idea.
13:26:24 RandallNeustaedter next
13:26:37 Webmama_Tina hayday was next dr :)
13:27:22 Webmama_Tina [hayday] what is the daily recommended amount of calcium for a 6-year old and if a child is deficient, would there be any signs to look for?
13:27:35 RandallNeustaedter Recommended amount of calcium is 500 mg.

13:27:52 wurzelkind hey :-)
13:28:04 wurzelkind me too!
13:28:11 sadieLake ?
13:28:13 Webmama_Tina :)
13:28:19 wurzelkind baby+dd are fed and ready for the night ;-)
13:28:24 RandallNeustaedter There are many other minerals necessary for bone growth, so focusing on calcium is a bit misdirected (by the dairy industry).
13:28:29 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single \?\" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :) "
13:28:51 wurzelkind ?
13:28:53 RandallNeustaedter So getting minerals from grains and veges (if they will eat any) will cover all of these mineral needs.
13:28:55 RandallNeustaedter next
13:29:07 KateDWJMERMJ Does a blendarized diet have any benefits for an exclusively g-tube fed baby, or would you stick with the formula and not introduce solids at 6 mo?
13:29:39 Gwendolyn ?
13:29:44 RandallNeustaedter KateDWJMERMJ What exactly is your baby's problem?
13:29:52 KateDWJMERMJ he has no swallow reflex
13:29:54 wurzelkind ?
13:30:10 RandallNeustaedter How old is your baby?
13:30:15 Gabby+Danny=Twins hey'
13:30:19 KateDWJMERMJ he'll be 6 months on the 21st
13:30:40 RandallNeustaedter KateDWJMERMJ Are you giving supplements? And what formula?
13:30:48 KateDWJMERMJ he had mandibular distractors for microgathnia, and they think that effected his suck and swallow reflex
13:31:02 Webmama_Tina current chatter:KateDWJMERMJ ....upcoming chatters: skrhythm, bennersmom, sadieLake wurzelkind Gwendolyn
13:31:10 KateDWJMERMJ he is on neosure, fortified to 24 calories, gets polyvisol, and iron supplements
13:33:18 RandallNeustaedter KateDWJMERMJ Even though Neosure has DHA, I would give him extra cod liver oil, especially in the winter. You might want to leave well enough alone at this point.
13:33:27 KateDWJMERMJ ok ty

13:33:48 RandallNeustaedter then introduce a thin puree of veges in a little while. But I wouldn't worry otherwise.
13:34:00 Webmama_Tina current chatter: skrhythm....upcoming chatters: bennersmom, sadieLake, wurzelkind, Gwendolyn
13:34:04 skrhythm my 8 year old is a VERY picky eater. she will hardly eat any veggies or fruit.  i feed her what she does like such as raw carrots, salad, grapes, apples........that's about it.  she eats meat and grains.  does she need any supplements, or she she ok with
13:34:17 Webmama_Tina (woops, sorry, that was a bit early...kate, were you done?)
13:34:23 Webmama_Tina premature enter, lol
13:34:24 KateDWJMERMJ yup ty tina
13:34:28 Webmama_Tina ok cool, sorry!
13:34:30 skrhythm the few things she gets now?
13:35:01 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm Most kids after 2 refuse most veges, so I wouldn't worry about this.
13:35:11 skrhythm ok
13:35:28 RandallNeustaedter As long as you are giving mostly whole foods and not processed junk, they grow just fine.
13:35:30 RandallNeustaedter next
13:35:51 Webmama_Tina current chatter:bennersmom ....upcoming chatters: sadieLake, wurzelkind, Gwendolyn
13:35:55 bennersmom What are your thoughts on the rotavirus vaccine?
13:36:36 RandallNeustaedter bennersmom the previous rotavirus vaccine was killing babies with a very serious intestinal complication, so I would be very wary of it.
13:36:54 RandallNeustaedter At least until it is on the market for 10 years, which means don't give it to your baby.
13:37:11 mum2Sarah  ?
13:37:13 bennersmom That's our feeling as well.  Thank you.
13:37:16 RandallNeustaedter next
13:37:17 sadieLake would I be better off giving my daughter an iron sup or have her get it from food (she's 81/2 mo)? And if the answer if food, if she's not eating much yet, what foods are going to give me the most bang for my buck in the iron dept?
13:38:09 RandallNeustaedter sadieLake You can have your pediatrician or family doctor do a simple test for anemia first of all to see if her iron stores are adequate. If so then you don't need to think about it.
13:38:22 Webmama_Tina current chatter: sadieLake....upcoming chatters: wurzelkind, Gwendolyn, mum2Sarah
13:38:28 sadieLake I'm not even sure if I'm getting enough iron
13:38:54 RandallNeustaedter The best foods are dark green veges, which you can get into her in the form of pureed soups.
13:39:06 RandallNeustaedter Her iron has nothing to do with your intake.
13:39:07 sadieLake do I need any vit c with that?
13:39:17 sadieLake and is she old enough for citrus?
13:39:24 sadieLake 8mo
13:40:17 RandallNeustaedter Vitamin C assists in iron absorption, but I do not give citrus until 12 months. Get her tested first, since you are worried about it. That should relieve your anxiety in this dept.
13:40:18 RandallNeustaedter next
13:40:23 wurzelkind my ds (3months) has atopic exzema on his forehead, cheeks and I saw that it is spreading on his arms as well. our homoopath said to take symbioflor (good for his intestines), put some weleda calendula cream on his face and thats it.
13:40:48 wurzelkind re: my diet. could I do anything about that? doc said I could omit dairy if anything
13:40:53 skrhythm ?
13:41:06 Webmama_Tina current chatter: wurzelkind....upcoming chatters: Gwendolyn, mum2Sarah, skrhythm
13:42:21 RandallNeustaedter Calendula will not help eczema. There is a holistic pediatric protocol for this, which includes a Chinese herbal formula (Fire Fighter, by Chinese Modular Solutions), and there are homeopathic medicines.
13:42:47 RandallNeustaedter Usually the aggravating insut is vaccines, so I would delay them if you gave the 2 month batch.
13:42:50 wurzelkind as I am in Germany US products are hard to get ;-)
13:43:16 wurzelkind so vacs yet, doc will delay them and we are fine w/that
13:43:21 RandallNeustaedter Yes I would stop dairy in your diet as well.
13:43:40 RandallNeustaedter Wash clothes only with laundry soap, not detergent.
13:43:50 wurzelkind really everthing? no cultured dairy as well?
13:44:06 RandallNeustaedter Seek out another homeopath, who might suggest a remedy as well.
13:44:08 RandallNeustaedter next
13:44:10 wurzelkind we currently use ecover or any other equivalent
13:44:16 Gwendolyn Im due with a girl in May--what formula should I give my daughter if breast milk is not enough--or if there are any complications with breastfeeding?
13:44:58 Webmama_Tina current chatter: Gwendolyn....upcoming chatters: mum2Sarah, skrhythm
13:45:46 RandallNeustaedter In my book and on the westonaprice.org website there is a homemade formula. Otherwise an organic formula. But breastfeeding is by far the best food source for babies and I would exhaust ALL avenues of breastfeeding counseling before resorting to formula.
13:45:50 RandallNeustaedter next
13:46:00 mum2Sarah My 10-year-old stepdaughter has been labeled ADHD and has been on drugs for it since she was 4. Can you give me any advice for any special nutritional concerns being on these drugs creates? I have no say in getting her off the drugs :(
13:46:07 Webmama_Tina current chatter:mum2Sarah ....upcoming chatters: skrhythm
13:46:10 Gwendolyn thankyou
13:46:43 mommydixon hey everyone....
13:47:10 Webmama_Tina hi mommydixon!
13:47:14 Webmama_Tina Welcome to this week's Mothering Sponsored chat! This is a moderated chat. If you have a question, please post a single \?\" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. "
13:47:40 RandallNeustaedter mum2Sarah I would make sure she is taking a fish oil supplement and she would also benefit from phosphatidylserine (available at health food stores), and a multi-vitamin at this age.
13:47:54 mum2Sarah Okay, thank you!
13:48:04 RandallNeustaedter but I don't think that the ADD drug will in itself cause deficiencies.
13:48:06 RandallNeustaedter next
13:48:09 skrhythm the old school notion that one should give rice cereal as first food will help baby sleep through the nigh, you said no grains till 12 months.  will fruits and veggies really help fill baby up?
13:48:45 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm Studies have shown that giving babies solids has no effect on sleep patterns.
13:49:00 skrhythm ok
13:49:05 RandallNeustaedter next
13:49:21 Webmama_Tina there's no one else in the queue...does anyone have a question for the doctor?
13:49:29 sadieLake ?
13:49:30 Webmama_Tina ok i have one...
13:49:36 sadieLake go ahead Tina
13:49:37 bennersmom ?
13:49:52 Webmama_Tina dr, you said most children do not eat veggies after 2....that's such a relief cuz we certainly have that...
13:50:17 Webmama_Tina so i'm just wondering if you could expand on what \whole foods\" instead of junk would be good to help compensate for the lack of veggies"
13:50:29 Webmama_Tina she does eat occasional fruit and she does LOVE broccoli, thank god
13:50:41 Webmama_Tina i just can't give her that every day cuz i'm afraid she'll od on it and start to hate it, LOL
13:50:57 RandallNeustaedter I gave a talk at a preschool about nutrition and asked everyone whose children ate veges to raise their hands. Out of 40 people about 3 raised their hands halfway.
13:51:07 Webmama_Tina wow
13:51:10 Webmama_Tina that's such a relief
13:51:18 Webmama_Tina and honestly....*I* don't eat veggies either, for the most part
13:51:24 Webmama_Tina never have
13:51:47 Webmama_Tina perhaps cuz my mom forced me to when i was a kid, don't really know...
13:52:38 Webmama_Tina just want to know some more good whole foods so that i can try to get those next time i go shopping :)
13:52:42 RandallNeustaedter Continue to offer kids veges, even if they say they hate them. If she wants brocolli every day, more power to you. I just wouldn't worry about it. Give a variety of fruits, even if it's expensive this time of year. And whole grains, eggs, beans if they will eat them, nuts for kids over 2 or 3, and as much meat as they want.
13:52:50 skrhythm at what age should we start worrying that our kids are not eating fruits and veggies?
13:53:12 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm You can worry all you want, but it won't make them eat it.
13:53:18 Webmama_Tina lol good point
13:53:26 RandallNeustaedter My advice is not to worry.
13:53:27 sadieLake what's best to give my daughter when she has a cold with congestion (stuffy but no cough, 81/2 mo) to help her get over it faster and decongest enough to sleep at night (and nurse because she's so stuffy she can't breathe and nurse at the same time)?
13:53:27 wurzelkind ?
13:53:36 skrhythm so you think they will just like it one day?
13:53:50 sadieLake sorry, hit enter by mistake...
13:53:54 RandallNeustaedter skrhythm One can only hope.

13:54:48 sadieLake I posted my question... above...
13:54:55 RandallNeustaedter sadieLake For colds, give vit c, echinacea, (emergen-c is good and kids like it). Windbreaker is a great Chinese herbal formula, by subscription.
13:54:55 Webmama_Tina woops we are almost out of time, so that will be it for today...do you have enough time to get to the rest of the queue dr?
13:55:09 skrhythm sadieLake i do saline nose spray, not sure if it's ok good or not though
13:55:10 sadieLake how can I get windbreaker?
13:55:22 RandallNeustaedter Sambucol (black elderberry) helps fight off viral infections too.
13:55:37 sadieLake sambucol has sugar, won't that depress her immune system?
13:55:51 RandallNeustaedter Any practitioner (acupuncturist, chiropractor, or MD or ND) can order Windbreaker for you.
13:56:07 sadieLake great!
13:56:26 RandallNeustaedter There are Sambucol preparations with only sorbitol
13:56:30 skrhythm 8 1/2 months is not too young for all that though?
13:56:39 RandallNeustaedter No.
13:56:46 sadieLake I'm still weirded out about giving her food!
13:56:52 Webmama_Tina lol

13:57:17 Webmama_Tina dr do you have enough time for the last 3?
13:57:23 RandallNeustaedter sadieLake weirded out, like watching a horror movie?
13:57:23 Webmama_Tina i see we are about out of time
13:57:26 Webmama_Tina don't want to keep you
13:57:27 sadieLake Well, I'll stock up! That makes me feel better.
13:57:36 RandallNeustaedter yes I'm ok
13:57:40 Webmama_Tina ok
13:57:42 sadieLake No, just don't want to mess up her little system

13:57:48 bennersmom At 5 months of age, should my son be getting ANYthing else besides breast milk?  And are there certain foods that I should avoid in my own diet (I'm a vegetarian but eat fish)?
