Mothering Magazine Sponsored Chat with Sarah Bridges, mother, author, and autism activist. A biological psychologist by training, Sarah's involvement in vaccine advocacy began when her now 11 year old son was severely brain damaged at four months of age after receiving the whole cell pertussis shot. He is one of only 1,800 children that the government has officially acknowledged in Vaccine Court as being vaccine injured. Thus, the government will pay for his lifetime care, which is conservatively estimated at a of cost nine million dollars. Don't miss this chance to chat with Sarah, a mom who challenged convention, took on the government, and won, on behalf of her son.

20 mamas in attendance!

13:10:57 Webmama_Tina ok, i'm going to post the blurb from mothering's email...that covers things for today's chat....hold on...
13:11:11 Webmama_Tina HOT MOTHERING TOPIC THRUST INTO LIMELIGHT For nearly 30 years, Mothering has informed our readers on diverse aspects of what we believe to be “the issue of our times,” vaccinations. Since 1999, Mothering has consistently reported on breaking developments linking vaccines, thimerosal, and autism. Last week, the topic we’ve covered for six years got its most high-profile exposure yet when a new article by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. titled “Deadly Immunity” was published simultaneously by Rolling Stone and Salon.com. This week, Mothering.com will be highlighting our extensive cache of information and resources, as well as featuring a link to “Deadly Immunity”, along with interviews and live chats with prominent members of the autism community. Check out the daily features at www.mothering.com. Join us Thursday at 2 PM Eastern, 1PM Central, 12PM Rocky Mountain, 11AM Pacific for a live chat with mother, author, and autism activist Sarah Bridges. Her son is one of only 1,800 kids that the government has officially acknowledged in Vaccine Court as being vaccine injured. Don’t miss this chance to chat with Sarah, a mom who challenged convention, took on the government, and won, on behalf of her son.
13:11:22 Webmama_Tina there we go...
13:11:27 zakers_mama sorry........actually I have a few  ???
13:11:41 Webmama_Tina hold on zakers...lets get sarah's intro first. :)
13:11:56 Webmama_Tina ok sarah, why don't you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background and experience
13:12:06 Webmama_Tina and when you are done, let us know that you are ready for your first question. :)
13:12:23 sarahbridges It's great to be here. The blurb above tells how I got started, and it's been quite a ride. I was trained as a scientist and then fell into this after my son was brain damaged. I have 4 great kids in all.
13:12:24 Webmama_Tina and don't mind me as i post reminders to newcomers here and there...
13:12:46 sarahbridges Ask anything
13:13:23 zakers_mama OK I've got a couple...
13:13:26 Webmama_Tina beckie you got the queue going here?
13:13:30 Webmama_Tina (just checking)
13:13:38 Webmama_Tina yes zakers you are first in line :)
13:13:59 Webmama_Tina go for it :)
13:14:47 sarahbridges I'm ready if you have questions
13:14:55 Webmama_Tina zakers, you're up. :)
13:14:59 zakers_mama OK sorry making ds lunch too
13:15:28 zakers_mama first I would like to know if you've also heard children w/milk allergy and/or a fam. history of seizures should not get the pertussis vax
13:15:46 zakers_mama and second, do you know of any link between developing food allergies and vaxs
13:16:14 slonatejones ?
13:16:28 sarahbridges I believe that children with family history of seizures should not get pertussis and that milk allergy may indicate imuune issues which would say no pertussis
13:17:08 sarahbridges There is research going that thimerosal suppresses immune functioning causing many allergies. It is very typical in these kids.  Next question
13:17:15 zakers_mama THANK YOU........would you have any insight as to WHY I had to find this out through my own research after my son had 3 doses of pertussis vax??
13:17:54 sarahbridges I think you are asking why they develop allergies and it ties back to immune damage that mercury (thimerosal) causes in kids.
13:18:18 zakers_mama *supposedly* though my 8 mo old didn't get thimerosal.....
13:18:28 sarahbridges Also, milk amplifies the effect of the mercury in thimerosal actually making reactions to it worse (this is from mice studies)
13:18:51 sarahbridges You can find out if your child did or didn't get thimerosal by getting the lot number. Next
13:18:54 Mod_Beckie Slonatejones you are next :)
13:19:15 slonatejones thanks. hi - father of 2.5 year old unvaccinated Kaylor"."
13:19:36 zakers_mama WOW......something else I didn't know......the only thing I do know is my son did not have allergies before his 2 mo shots and he started showing signs of it about 3 weeks after his first set....which I KNEW I shouldn't have gotten...
13:19:42 zakers_mama OK I'm done now.
13:20:06 slonatejones and baby #2 due in 1 month. questions: are you in support of vaccines in general and which would you suggest getting for sure?
13:20:09 Webmama_Tina you can get in line again zakers if you have more questions...just post another question mark :)
13:20:22 Mimiheart ?
13:20:35 sarahbridges I am in support of polio, and DT if without thimerosal
13:20:49 slonatejones thanks.
13:21:00 sarahbridges I personally would avoid Heb B as you won't be exposed until teen years, I also would wait on newer vaccines.
13:21:07 slonatejones agree totally
13:21:11 zakers_mama ?
13:21:14 sarahbridges The jury is out on MMR for some children
13:21:28 sarahbridges next
13:21:30 Mod_Beckie Mimiheart, it's your turn :)
13:22:30 Mimiheart I didn't get my first two children vaccinated at all.  I have a 2.5 month old, who got the DTaP two weeks ago, because of pressure from the ped. during a curreng epidemic.""
13:22:54 Mimiheart She's been congested ever since.  Is this one of the possible reactions?  Should I not get her any more?
13:23:48 sarahbridges It is such a personal question--and one contingent on how you understand your child's health. On the good note--DTaP is now thimerosal free and accelular.  I did give my children DT, though not the booster which only comes with mercury (5 and 7 year old shot)
13:24:45 sarahbridges The other thing to remember is that estrogen is protective regarding mercury and testosterone amplifies it (hence 1/80 boys with autism).  Next
13:24:52 Mod_Beckie Zakers_mama, your turn again :)
13:25:25 Webmama_Tina ?
13:25:29 zakers_mama OK.....tell me what you know about the possible link between vax'ing and diabetes
13:25:46 zakers_mama (ds already has a strong genetic tendency to that too)
13:26:05 sarahbridges I know much less about that although am aware that there is a body of knowledge-- sorry not to be more specific, next
13:26:29 Mimiheart ?
13:26:31 Mod_Beckie Webmama_Tina, your up!
13:26:34 zakers_mama Z?
13:26:37 Webmama_Tina :)
13:26:44 colletta101 ?
13:27:14 Webmama_Tina it seems like all the fear around vaccines centers around thimerosal....is there other ingredients we should be worried about?
13:27:35 Webmama_Tina and also...are the current vaccines truly thimerosal free? i know the flu shot is not...
13:27:57 sarahbridges Good question. Thimerosal has been the biggest, but I would still watch MMR, and some of the newer ones (Heb B has had numerous adverse reports)
13:27:58 Webmama_Tina seems like i read somewhere that they say they are thimerosal free and some are just lower doses....don't remember exactly
13:28:35 sarahbridges The infant vaccines largely have only trace amounts (probably ok) thought the flu shot has so much mercury you would need to weigh 275 pounds to take it.
13:29:08 sarahbridges Also, many many boosters still have it (most required shots)--and all infant vaccines in developing countries now have mercury thanks to our exports.  next
13:29:10 Mod_Beckie Upcoming Chatters ~ Mimiheart, Zakers_Mama, and Colletta101
13:29:23 Mod_Beckie Go ahead Mimiheart :)
13:29:26 Webmama_Tina lovely
13:29:27 Webmama_Tina thankyou
13:29:28 Mimiheart What do you know about consuming tuna during pregnancy and early childhood in relation to murcury poisoning/autism?
13:30:34 sarahbridges I am writing an article for Organic Style about that now and know that it is VERY dangerous during pregnancy and should be avoided for young children. I would stay away from any large fish and severely limit other fish. One toxic serving at a sensitive window time can be very detriment
13:30:59 sarahbridges I missed the last question
13:31:29 Mod_Beckie Mimiheart was the last question?
13:31:50 Webmama_Tina the tuna question
13:31:57 sarahbridges next
13:31:59 Mod_Beckie Zakers_mama is next
13:32:13 Webmama_Tina ?
13:32:48 anji ?
13:33:13 Mod_Beckie Zakers_mama?
13:33:18 zakers_mama How do I deal with the fact that I chose an extremely pro-vax ped before I researched this, and my insurance won't let me switch without a letter stating why and they have to approve it?>
13:33:47 zakers_mama I'm pretty sure they'd consider ME wrong in refusing vax's?
13:33:57 sarahbridges It depends on the state in which you live. If you have objections (legally) state that assertively and ask him/her to respect beliefs
13:34:17 michelle Maybe you already answered this are there any vaccinations you reccommend for babies and can a physician refuse to see you if you dont get them
13:34:31 sarahbridges They do pressure you to vx as that is in the public good's interest--though can be horrendous for individual children.
13:34:56 Mod_Beckie Upcoming Chatters ~ Coletta101, Webmama_Tina, and Anji
13:35:06 zakers_mama ?
13:35:09 sarahbridges I don't know in your state if doctors can refuse to see you--find out.  I personally would do the polio, DT (thimerosal free)
13:35:29 sarahbridges next
13:35:37 Mod_Beckie Colletta101, your up!
13:35:41 slonatejones ?
13:35:44 Webmama_Tina Friendly Reminder: Please do not post unless it is your turn to ask a question. If you have a question, please post a single ?" and you'll be added to the queue. Have your question ready when your name is called. THANKYOU! :)"

13:36:23 Mod_Beckie Upcoming Chatters ~ Webmama_Tina, Anji, Zakers_mama, Slonatejones
13:36:25 colletta101 Hi, I am mom to a 12 yr old severely affected son wit h autism aka mercury poisoning. my question, Rfk,jr mentioned that 5 of his kids are from the 'thimerosal generattion. Is it to nosy to ask if any of his kids are affected? Also, I thank him so much!"
13:36:25 sarahbridges next is fine
13:37:13 sarahbridges He does not have an autistic child--but is passionate this to a degree that you would think he does. Outrage is the way I'd describe it. next
13:37:30 Mod_Beckie Webmama_Tina  Your turn :)
13:37:50 sarahbridges Nomercury.org has a great thank you card for him with hundreds of notes..
13:38:03 Webmama_Tina ok i was wondering if you have your own belief on a timetable to give babies vaccines...as far as delaying them and then which to give....
13:38:04 colletta101 Thanks , I dont' understand why all parents of vaccinated kids are not outraged!
13:38:22 Webmama_Tina i'm having a baby again any day now and haven't decided yet what to do about vaccines...we selectively immunized my dd
13:38:41 sarahbridges As I've studied immune function it is clear to me that less at once is better, and older is better.
13:39:36 sarahbridges Scandanavian countries do fewer shots and at an older age. I have deferred as many as I can so my children will be bigger and have developed brains.  The lesson from thimerosal is stagger the shots (the kids got over 100 times the safe limit for mercury on given days. next
13:39:46 Mod_Beckie Anji, your turn!
13:39:49 Webmama_Tina i know some people wait til 6months, 1 year....just wondering what age you thought would be ok to start? and we do choose to separate the vaccines where possible, i totally agree on that..my dd had MMR each separate...like a month in between each shot
13:40:08 anji Do you think there is any connection between the massive rise of ADD cases and the number of vaccinations required" to attend school?"
13:40:10 Webmama_Tina woops, sorry, i typed without reading
13:40:13 Webmama_Tina :)
13:40:42 sarahbridges There is clearly a link from the reserach between thimerosal and ADD--many studies about that. Still unclear on other vx and their addititves.
13:41:01 sarahbridges next
13:41:05 Mod_Beckie Zakers_Mama, your up!
13:41:13 zakers_mama I live in a state with religious exemption only.  My problem is with ingredients in *certain* vax's.  Can I choose to finish certain ones for my son and religious-exempt others?
13:42:01 sarahbridges I have done that--though you need to first separate what they are getting on certain days (so you can say I object this visit, versus I object to this vax). This is not legal advice--just experience
13:42:19 sarahbridges next
13:42:20 Mod_Beckie Slonatejones, it's your turn :)
13:42:22 slonatejones would you suggest going to the county for single-dose thm-free shots?
13:42:34 sarahbridges Going to the county?
13:42:44 slonatejones county health dpt.
13:42:52 Mimiheart ?
13:42:58 sarahbridges I would absolutely get the thimerosal free shots if you can.
13:43:14 slonatejones i've heard that's the only place to ensure you get what you want""
13:43:27 zakers_mama ?
13:43:38 sarahbridges I am not an advocate of the flu shot, though, as efficacy studies repeatedly show it confers little value. next
13:43:48 Mod_Beckie Mimiheart, your up!
13:43:53 Mimiheart Is there thimerosol in the meningitis vaccine?
13:44:23 Webmama_Tina meningitis=HIB?
13:44:41 sarahbridges I believe that there are a few versions, so you will need to ensure you get a mercury free one. www.nomercury.org has a list of shots with mercury--HIB is different. next
13:44:46 Mimiheart I think so, the ped. keeps calling it meningitis
13:45:08 eva&giosmom ?
13:45:27 sarahbridges ready
13:45:32 Mod_Beckie zakers_mama your up
13:45:37 zakers_mama With the delayed vaxing....if I were to wait until my child was 2 or older, would they give him the thimerosal-containing booster or the thimerosal-free infant vax?
13:46:10 sarahbridges Good question. They don't use infant vaccines for much older kids--but I don't know in that grey area of between 2-5.
13:46:12 sarahbridges next
13:46:23 Mod_Beckie Eva+Giosmom
13:46:25 Mod_Beckie your up :)
13:46:46 zakers_mama ?
13:47:04 sarahbridges ready
13:47:13 eva&giosmom my hubbie is a chiro and recently went to a vaccine seminar, Dr tim o'shea and came back and scared me to death . well anyways we did decided to vaccinate my 10 week old cause he said that if no one vaccinated there would be more dead childeren in the
13:47:21 eva&giosmom wrold is that true?
13:47:40 colletta101 ?
13:47:53 eva&giosmom thethe pred said that
13:48:02 eva&giosmom ped sorry holding my baby
13:48:09 sarahbridges I think it is probably true--no doubt vaccines do a lot of good. The two questions for me are: is it a safe vaccine, and is my child sensitive to having a reaction.
13:48:11 sarahbridges ready
13:48:19 Mod_Beckie Zakers_mama, you up
13:48:23 Mod_Beckie your up :)
13:48:40 eva&giosmom ?
13:48:48 zakers_mama How would I find out BEFORE I waited what they'd do for him?
13:49:00 Mimiheart ?
13:49:14 sarahbridges I would think about family history--is there much autoimmune disease or seizures or bad allergies?
13:49:18 sarahbridges ready
13:49:26 Mod_Beckie zakers_mom, your up
13:49:38 zakers_mama No I mean with the thimerosal if they would give him thimerosal or not
13:49:45 sarahbridges Also, don't vaccinate when they are on antibiotics or sick-
13:50:05 zakers_mama ?
13:50:08 Mod_Beckie oh, sorry, my bad, it was actually colletta101's turn
13:50:13 Mod_Beckie Excuse my preggo brain ;)
13:50:34 colletta101 Sarah, How is your son doing today? My 12 yr old thankfully does not have seizures. He had the gradually regression into autism after his MMR and is still severely affected though we keep tryng everything.
13:50:43 Webmama_Tina 10 minutes left in the chat :)
13:51:08 sarahbridges He is still severely affected-daily seizures, mental retardation, autism, etc--I will say though he is the happiest person I know.
13:51:13 Mod_Beckie Upcoming Chatters ~ Eva&giosmom, Mimiheart, zakers_mama
13:51:30 sarahbridges I'm sorry about your son--have you looked at the DAN! protocol?
13:51:34 Mimiheart actually-ne'er mind she answered it
13:51:59 sarahbridges ready
13:52:08 Mod_Beckie eva&giosmom
13:52:10 eva&giosmom how would i find out if my son or daughter would have a reaction to a vaccine?
13:52:10 Mod_Beckie your turn !
13:52:43 colletta101 yes, we been doing biomedical for 8 yrs, diet etc.  a tough nut case. He suffers with allergies, headaches etc.
13:52:57 sarahbridges I don't know that you can know ahead. I would think about family history, baby's size (avoid preemie shots) whether they've been on a lot of antibiotics (bad), if they are sick.
13:53:15 sarahbridges I'm sorry it has been so hard to help--we are in a similar boat.
13:53:18 sarahbridges ready
13:53:26 Mod_Beckie Zakers_mama, your turn
13:53:49 zakers_mama What would you do if you had the situation I do...with current ds or future dc's?  My son was *not* 'born with' a milk intolerance, it showed up right after his 2 mo. vax's.  He also has family history of seizures and diabetes.
13:54:29 sarahbridges I would avoid pertussis, heb b, mmr--but again--that is my experience from having a damaged child--it is so personal.
13:54:32 sarahbridges ready
13:54:33 zakers_mama Oh and my family history is unknown...I'm adopted.
13:54:44 Mod_Beckie The queue is finished :)
13:55:10 sarahbridges Well good luck to everyone with your kids. You sound like such great parents.
13:55:34 sarahbridges Is that it?
13:55:46 jen thank you
13:55:53 zakers_mama DS already had his shots up to 6 mos.  I want him to finish DT and polio mostly due to the fact we might travel to areas where you still see this.  How old should I wait till?
13:55:56 colletta101 Thank you Sarah. God Bless!
13:56:23 zakers_mama thank you *so much* too  :)
13:56:28 sarahbridges I did polio on schedule--and perhaps stagger DT and push back a few months.
13:56:37 sarahbridges you are very welcome.
13:56:51 Mod_Beckie Thank you very much, this has been very interesting~
13:56:55 eva&giosmom *fingerscrossed* <===is alli can do but thank you so much
13:57:08 sarahbridges Take care everyone
13:57:14 Webmama_Tina thankyou so much sarah!
13:57:20 Webmama_Tina this has been a very informative chat
13:57:25 Mimiheart thanks
13:57:27 zakers_mama thank you!!  :):)

13:57:46 sarahbridges Thanks for that.
13:57:51 Webmama_Tina yeah mothering rocks, lol! :)
13:57:59 zakers_mama they're STILL the only place that talks about it!
13:58:11 Webmama_Tina i have to say i was very disappointed with the abc coverage of that article last nite...
13:58:13 Webmama_Tina did you see it?
13:58:24 zakers_mama well I mean as in talking to other people who don't vax and having articles about vax injury etc
13:58:26 Webmama_Tina they basically refuted it all and said that robert kennedy had no expertise in the area
13:58:42 jen hopefully someday there will be NOMORE talk of it  it wii be in the past!
13:58:51 Mimiheart Montel had a fascinating show the other day, I may start watching him regularly-despite the fact that I don't watch TV.
13:58:51 sarahbridges I was horribly upset. They actually did a fair piece with him a week ago, then under pressure from the top were told to recut " it and add CDC and IOM--all of whom have terrible conflicts."
13:59:07 Webmama_Tina yeah they definitely did NOT show both sides
13:59:13 Webmama_Tina they should have had experts supporting it as well
13:59:13 zakers_mama I LOVED that show, it even got my MOM on my side with the vaxing!
13:59:33 zakers_mama can I ask *one more* question?
13:59:34 sarahbridges Bobby K also was rejected by NYT (we went and presented to the edit board) and very few places would even discuss what he is doing as it is 'too political"

06/23/05"
13:59:39 sarahbridges sure
13:59:42 Webmama_Tina lol zakers
13:59:52 eva&giosmom zankers was it the one with yes on vacinating??
14:00:02 eva&giosmom i seen that one along time ago
14:00:04 Webmama_Tina geez, you'd think people would actually listen to someone big like that...argh
14:00:17 zakers_mama Do you think I'm insane for thinking my child's milk allergy is a result of his vaccinations?
14:00:44 zakers_mama I mean, I have *never* heard of a child suddenly developing colicky symptoms and an allergy at 3 months old...
14:00:47 Mimiheart I don't, but then again, I think my daughter's congestion is due to the vaccines
14:00:48 sarahbridges I don't. THere is a lot of research showing thimerosal (if your child got that) wreaks havoc on immune function.
14:00:52 zakers_mama til my kid
14:01:13 sarahbridges I was saying I don't think it is crazy to correlate milk allergy with vaccines.
14:01:25 Webmama_Tina its all so scary
14:01:29 Webmama_Tina damned if you do and damned if you don't
14:01:31 zakers_mama I think there is trace in the Pediarix otherwise he didn't get *any*
14:01:33 Webmama_Tina hate this issue
14:02:06 Webmama_Tina are there any other websites you would like to refer us to before you go sarah?
14:02:11 eva&giosmom yeah webmama ...me and my dh had some problems cause of that dang seminar he went to
14:02:13 sarahbridges It is really awful. But follow your gut and stand up if people push on you. Even after the doctors admitted my son was brain damaged by pertussis, one of them tried to give it again.
14:02:14 Webmama_Tina i can put them up on the site
14:02:15 zakers_mama and what do you think of a vax like Pediarix?  I didn't WANT to consent to it........but my ped talked me into it, I really hadn't researched the whole thing yet so I didn't really know what to say...
14:02:33 Mimiheart What I don't understand is because of this epidemic, the pediatricians are trying to get kids vaccinated against purtussis more than the regular vaccine schedule...I can't figure out how that could help.
14:03:13 zakers_mama It wears off what is the point?  Even my really pro vax friend is against chicken pox vax because of that...
14:03:22 Webmama_Tina pertussis is a survivable disease too...scary to watch kids with it, but i have a friend who all her kids have survived it
14:03:24 sarahbridges The problem with that argument is that in recent outbreaks at least half of the kids with it were vaccinated. Again--you need to go by what is right for you--read up--and then tell doctors, I appreciate your beliefs, and hope you will respect mine""
14:03:39 zakers_mama sarah, did your son get the 'P' or the 'aP'?
14:03:54 sarahbridges He got the P they pulled off the market 10 months after his injury
14:04:00 Webmama_Tina ok i'm sure sarah needs to go now... :)  we could probably go on all day discussing this very serious issue
14:04:00 zakers_mama :(
14:04:01 Webmama_Tina :)
14:04:16 Webmama_Tina we really appreciate your time sarah!
14:04:18 Mimiheart my daughter got it on June 8th-2 month check up, and they want her to have it again on July 5th.
14:04:28 colletta101 Sarah is right moms. Always go with your gut, do not give in to the docs or anyone. Once your kid is damaged there is no going back.
14:04:36 sarahbridges I do need to run, but again, thanks so much for having me--and do visit nomercury.org--it is run by a medical family and fantastic!
