3/17/05

10 mamas in attendance

21:09:44 WeeHands WELCOME TO THE SIGNING WITH BABIES CHATS!  PLEASE EMAIL ALL THE MOMMIES YOU KNOW! I'M YOUR HOST SARA BINGHAM FROM WEEHANDS!
21:10:19 WeeHands How are things in Ottawa?
21:11:44 mom2josh Great!! Josua is very funny though..he is changing his signs...but the weather is great
21:13:24 WeeHands I read that on the Alex and Leah group - how old is Joshua now (my 4 year old has the same name! :) )
21:15:15 mom2josh he is 10 months old..it goes too quickly, but what a personality change lately...it's hilarious
21:15:55 ourwiefamily hello!  My name is Karla
21:16:32 ourwiefamily did I manage to find the right place?
21:16:34 mom2josh The name joshua" was nowhere on popularity lists a couple years ago, but now it's #1...aghh., Joshua was an unassuming man who went on to accomplish great things!!!"
21:17:01 WeeHands Hi Karla!  If you want to chat about signing with baby - you're in the right place!
21:17:21 ourwiefamily cool  :)
21:17:31 WeeHands I have taught over 500 families in the past 4 years and not one Joshua! 'cept one Dad!
21:18:00 mom2josh I actually have never met another Joshua either...
21:18:12 ourwiefamily really???  I know *tons* of Joshuas
21:18:21 WeeHands where are your from Karla?
21:18:42 ourwiefamily I've lived around about the upper midwest
21:18:52 mom2josh It must be the number 1 name for a reason..Hi karla my name is Liz and I am in Ottawa..signing mom to Josh 10 months
21:19:48 ourwiefamily I have six children ... always meant to do sign language w/ them but other than very minimal signs, haven't really done it.  Interested in trying more this time w/ my youngest
21:19:59 WeeHands ourwiefamily upper midwest what .... :)
21:20:19 WeeHands I'm just east of Toronto and  mom2josh (AKA Liz) is from Ottawa
21:21:01 ourwiefamily what age is best to start w/ babies?
21:21:36 WeeHands you can really start at any age, babies born to Deaf parents are signed to from day one and they have an amazing ability to understand at 9 months
21:21:47 WeeHands most babies sign back between 9 and 12 months
21:22:10 WeeHands most babies in WeeHands classes are between the ages of 4 and 10 months of age
21:23:25 ourwiefamily That makes sense to me ... I've been hearing to wait until 6m
21:24:29 mom2josh I started signing with my son at about 3/4 mnths to get my own consistency and I had it down by about 6, he signed more" at around 8 and just recently added about 5 signs so all of a sudden..."
21:24:40 ourwiefamily We used to do a lot of signing with our eldest two when they were younger (past a year though)
21:24:59 ourwiefamily A friend of the family is deaf ... but after he moved away, we stopped signing and I have forgotten almost everything
21:25:58 ourwiefamily Do you have any good recommendations for books to help as a refresher?  Esp a book geared at signing w/ babies?  I'm assuming there are several, but wanted to know if there is one in particular that is good
21:26:20 ra_ron Hi!  I
21:26:30 ra_ron I'm new here
21:27:36 WeeHands One of the best books out there is Joseph Garcia's Sign with your Baby""
21:27:45 WeeHands Hi  ra_ron !
21:27:54 ra_ron Hi Sara
21:27:55 WeeHands Welcome!
21:28:09 ra_ron Thanks, thought I'd drop in
21:28:47 WeeHands I re-look at his video every few months just to keep me reminded of his theories for my classes!
21:29:14 WeeHands Monta Briants Baby Sign Language" is also a good book."
21:29:34 WeeHands Then there are some wonderful websites and email group that are great support
21:29:38 WeeHands www.sign2me.com
21:29:44 WeeHands www.signingtime.com
21:30:10 mom2josh Sara do you think signing time will come to canada??
21:31:04 ra_ron What do you mean come to Canada?
21:31:16 WeeHands Liz, ra_ron is Rachel!
21:31:54 WeeHands We all want to know when Signing Time is coming to Canada!  My two year old is in love with Alex an' Eah"!"
21:32:00 ra_ron Sorry, that's not fair.  I was about to introduce myself
21:32:02 mom2josh Hello Rachel... I mean, the taping of some of the videos..I know they were in NY...It would be nice to meet with them..
21:32:15 WeeHands :)
21:32:19 ra_ron No, we've never done NY
21:32:28 ra_ron CA, and UT
21:32:51 mom2josh my josh just dances and dances and dances...he could care less about any other video..but for some reason he just keeps dancing..
21:32:52 WeeHands At this point in time I would actually prefer to go to CA and UT!  I can't stand the cold!
21:33:03 ra_ron Are you all in Canada?
21:33:18 mom2josh oops I thought I saw somewhere where you were going to NY or something...
21:33:19 ra_ron (It's cold here too) UT
21:33:43 ra_ron We might go to VA.  Emilie lives there, as does Alex;-)
21:33:58 WeeHands yes, but you are skiers - I need to hibernate for 5 months of the year!
21:34:17 WeeHands (too much Caribean (sp!) blood in me!)
21:34:21 ra_ron It's even raining in CA right now, I hear
21:35:06 ra_ron We start shooting 7 and 8 this week
21:35:26 ourwiefamily So ... what are we all talking about?  I am totally lost!
21:35:51 ra_ron Sorry, I am Rachel Coleman from Signing Time.  Leah's mom.
21:36:52 WeeHands my hubby is so impressed i'm chatting with you! it doesn't get impressed often!
21:37:01 ourwiefamily And Leah is?  I'm telling you ... I'm really lost.  LOL
21:37:13 ra_ron www.signingtime.com
21:37:18 ourwiefamily Ahhhh
21:37:20 WeeHands sabrina (2 years) loves the in a house" and the "rainbow" songs!"
21:37:41 mom2josh I am actually very shy to be here too...Karla, think meeting the creator of sesame street....it's really that big once you get into it..
21:37:53 ra_ron Leah is my daughter who is deaf
21:38:09 ra_ron Liz, do I know you?
21:38:36 ra_ron I guess I should say know""
21:38:40 WeeHands When I sign and sing there are mommies and daddies, sisters and brothers" she looks sad and says "what about me and Josh" so I have to resing it "mommies and daddies, josh and sabrina and there's me, me, me" then she's pleased as punch!"
21:39:42 WeeHands Liz is a new Sign2Me presenter in Ottawa who I know is very willing to take the 4 hour train ride to Toronto when you come here!
21:39:58 WeeHands How old is your wee one  ourwiefamily ?
21:40:08 mom2josh Hi Rachel, you don't know me, I am mom to 10 month old Joshua here in Ottawa and he loves the rainbow song....and Sara is right....sara I would take the train ride just to see YOU
21:40:11 ourwiefamily There are videos with the songs?  I'm sorry to sound so out of the loop but this is the first time I have ever talked" about signing with anyone outside of the most brief mention"
21:40:26 ourwiefamily My youngest is 5 months with five others older than her
21:40:37 ra_ron LOL!  You entered for the My Town" contest right?"
21:41:02 ra_ron Don't worry, I started a sign language video company 4 years ago, because my daughter is deaf
21:41:24 WeeHands My town" - yup! and encouraged a "few" others in Toronto to do the same!"
21:41:31 ra_ron We made a little video and starte selling it.  Now we have 6 videos in our series and 6 more happening this year
21:41:44 WeeHands ourwiefamily six kiddies - bless you!
21:42:01 WeeHands what are the themes for the new 6, Rachel?
21:42:07 ra_ron Well, Sara, I am gong to see what I can do about coming there.  I need to renew my passport
21:42:09 ourwiefamily That sounds very wonderful! ... are the videos available on the website you mentioned ... signingtimes I think it was?
21:42:17 mom2josh Karla, welcome welcome welcome...Sara and Rachel are the right peope to be talking to.  There is such a great amount of resources out there and this is as good as it gets...
21:42:32 ra_ron www.signingtime.com
21:42:34 WeeHands I'm just about to email a friend at Tourism Toronto to help encourage you!
21:42:46 ra_ron you can see previews there when you click the PRODUCTS tab
21:43:40 ra_ron Animals Animals Everywhere Vol.1 & 2 (those will be #7 & #8)
21:44:15 ra_ron My Home and My Neighborhood will be there too.
21:44:42 mom2josh Ottawa is the Nations Capital...think of the rich culture here...picture the parliament in the background...
21:44:51 WeeHands I'm trying to set up a WeeHands day up with the Toronto Zoo this summer.  Over 500 families have gone through out classes - the day would be perfect for a Signing Time! visit!
21:45:25 WeeHands ...think of the beaver tails....mmmm, beaver tails!
21:45:32 WeeHands I need to learn the sign for that!
21:45:56 WeeHands Beaver tails = fried dough with cinnamon sugar in the shape of a beaver tail!
21:47:01 ra_ron That would be fun!  Keep me posted on the date and I will see what we can do.
21:47:25 ra_ron 500 families?  You have been busy!  How long have you been a presenter?
21:47:32 WeeHands since 2001
21:48:15 WeeHands There are now 9 WeeHands instructors (all are or are on the way to being Sign2Me Presenters; all are moms who have signed with their little ones)
21:48:27 ourwiefamily just went and checked out a couple previews ... WOW
21:48:37 mom2josh my sister is one of her graduates!! and she is not easily impressed,,but she ranks it among one of her best experiences!!!
21:48:53 ourwiefamily It brings back a lot of memories.  We used to sign all the time w/ the oldest two (when they were about 4 and 2)
21:48:59 ra_ron So explain the difference between Wee Hands and Sign2Me
21:50:10 WeeHands WeeHands is just my little company here in southern ontario. i started it as a Sign2Me presenter and then people in my class and the community wanted to join me
21:50:22 ourwiefamily I still sign come here" when they are all playing and "now" and "don't run" and "please" and "sorry""
21:50:57 ourwiefamily What sign do people use for want to nurse"?"
21:51:22 ourwiefamily We made up our own because our deaf friend didn't know a word for it ... we learned all our signs from him.
21:51:38 ra_ron You can sign MILK or their is a sign for NURSE
21:52:15 WeeHands I've kind of tapped an A" shape at my middle upper chest because that's what my first born did when he wanted to nurse"
21:52:18 ourwiefamily We did an n" and brought it to the mouth.  If you look at it, it kind of looks like a "nana" as we call mum's milk source in our family."
21:52:44 ourwiefamily My still nursing toddler used to latch onto his sign :)
21:52:45 ra_ron You usually ask a question by raising your eyebrows
21:53:09 ourwiefamily We were told to flick our index finger up and down kind of
21:53:19 ourwiefamily for question I mean ... and the eyebrow too
21:53:27 WeeHands there is a sign for breastfeeding - it looks like you are holding a bent 5 shape over your breast moving it out and closing into a flat o shape
21:53:32 ra_ron NURSE is both hands in the EAT/FOOD shape but coming from your chest toward your child
21:53:44 mom2josh I used a sign for nurse, that represented sort of unclipping the bra...but Josh has only ever used the sign for Milk and then makes his way to me if he doesn't  want a bottle...
21:54:07 WeeHands ra_ron thanks for that!
21:54:23 ra_ron Question by drawing a question mark with your index finger works too
21:54:43 WeeHands i thought my daughter had stopped nursing at 10 months until she learned the sign for nurse"!"
21:54:59 ra_ron It is also the sign for FEED but you place it at your chest then toward imaginary baby
21:55:23 Damiarayne what sign should we use for when my son wants to be picked up?
21:55:48 mom2josh Interesting about the eyebrows, I teach customer service and cultural awareness as well and we have to teach our flight attentdants about our inuit culture and the use of eyebrows and facial expressions as a communication ...
21:56:31 ra_ron If you sign WANT MILK you are saying I want milk.  If you raise your brows youare asking Do you want milk?""
21:56:52 ra_ron It's pretty cool how sign language works!
21:57:16 WeeHands For pick me up" see this page: http://www.sign2me.com/products.php"
21:57:42 WeeHands Sign2Me named their CD Pick Me Up" because it's the first sign almost all babies make!"
21:57:46 ourwiefamily So much is coming back to me just sitting here listening" to you all talk.  I don't think it would be that hard for us to start up again.  I think my problem is I never did well looking in books to decipher the signs.  I do much better w/ someoneshowingme"
21:58:01 mom2josh it's is amazing how cross-cultrual asl really is...
21:58:03 Damiarayne cool thanks
21:58:47 ra_ron It is hard to learn from books.  I always recommend a class and Signing Time of course!
21:58:59 WeeHands everyone has a different learning style  ourwiefamily
21:59:12 WeeHands well it is a visual language!
22:00:16 WeeHands i think just about every class should start with the Signing Time" song and substitute the babies names into "It's Signing Time with ____ and ____""
22:00:24 ourwiefamily I was surprised by how many forms of sign language there are though ... dialects or whatever you call it.  We learned mostly SEE and another one that I don't remember offhand but regional to CA
22:00:33 ourwiefamily So do people mostly do ASL w/ signing to babies?
22:00:47 mom2josh a class allows you to visualize and verbalize at the same time and you learn the vocabulary in manageable increments, like a pyramid and therefore its easier to integrate into your everyday lives...
22:01:03 ra_ron If you use ASL, your child is also lerqning a valuable skill, a second language
22:01:30 WeeHands ourwiefamily ASL is what we use in our classes.
22:01:34 ra_ron A class also let's your child praqctice their receptive and expressive sign language
22:01:37 ourwiefamily SEE is a valuable skill too, though, isn't it?
22:01:52 vonnie why are we the only one here or the only one i see listed
22:02:01 vonnie i see redsonja and myself
22:02:25 WeeHands we started off with classes for babies and now have a toddlers class and now parents/teachers want preschool and school aged classes.  If we hadn't used ASL we'd have been in trouble!
22:02:35 ourwiefamily How do we find out where classes are?
22:02:36 WeeHands ra_ron great point!
22:03:23 ourwiefamily Our deaf friend preferred SEE over ASL and wasn't very good at ASL ... is that a regional thing?  (He was raised in CA)
22:03:26 vonnie where are those classes
22:03:38 WeeHands it depends on the area you are in.  SEE isn't used in the Toronto area.  ASL is used, with the exception of an area west of us that uses Signed English (which I believe is 80% based on ASL)
22:03:45 vonnie no it's not a regional thing - its a preference
22:03:55 vonnie attitude and raising experience
22:04:06 WeeHands Hi Terrie!
22:04:15 signingminionmaker HI!!!
22:04:25 signingminionmaker Is Rachel here?
22:04:38 vonnie yes rachel's here
22:04:39 ra_ron I can run but I can not hide!
22:04:42 vonnie haha
22:04:46 WeeHands Signed English is used just west of Toronto, but with children with severe delays who are not Deaf
22:05:11 signingminionmaker what is the topic of the evening?
22:05:40 WeeHands it's our regular free for all!
22:05:50 signingminionmaker Cool!!
22:06:08 vonnie how many of you use signs for your kids - not sure if this is a parents" thing"
22:06:13 WeeHands **** (sprinkle with hypnotic messages to get Rachel to Toronto this summer) *****
22:06:23 vonnie because I faced" a situation and wasn't sure whether to interrupt or not"
22:06:33 WeeHands vonnie tell us more?
22:06:51 vonnie nah rachel can just simply come down to arizona which is close by! :-D
22:07:06 vonnie ok my boy is deaf (in case some of you dont know) and
22:07:33 vonnie he was playing with some kind of mazess box (forgot what those are called) at the box
22:07:44 vonnie then a girl was already sitting to his right on the other side
22:08:23 vonnie she started talking to him - my immediate response was to try to explain but i wouldn't know how to explain that we are deaf because hearing kids always act shocked but i thought i would leave it be since Jelani will always face that situation
22:08:44 vonnie she was saying something like no you can't blah blah" and he just looked and stared at her and went back to his business"
22:09:12 vonnie the funny part was she started shooking her head and he rolled his eyes and looked at me then plopped at the floor so i rubbed his head to let him know its ok
22:09:28 vonnie he went back and she tried again then he just nodded his head roughly and went back to his business
22:09:33 vonnie kinda thought it was funny and cute
22:09:59 vonnie but in the future wonder if theres a way to explain to hearing kids i dont know
22:11:30 ourwiefamily Are you also deaf, Vonnie?
22:11:33 vonnie yeah
22:12:24 ourwiefamily Hmmm ... I'm trying to picture what to do in a situation like that and just not sure
22:12:28 signingminionmaker wow, I think honesty is the best approach.
22:12:33 vonnie ok
22:12:47 ourwiefamily How do the kids react after the shocked response wears off?
22:12:59 vonnie i grew up withthat
22:13:07 vonnie some start wanting to learn to sign
22:13:07 ra_ron With Leah, kids would either jump in and play, whether or not see answered or go about their own business
22:13:09 signingminionmaker Could you show them some signs in regards to the situation?
22:13:10 vonnie some run to their parents
22:13:33 ourwiefamily My kids would be totally thrilled.
22:13:37 signingminionmaker Mine too
22:14:00 carlisa57 Good evening.
22:14:03 vonnie that girl was simply being a bit bossy but he wasn't in her way which is why i thought it was funny between deaf and hearing both not being aware plus seeing a personality of a girl and a boy
22:14:05 ra_ron I didn't want to jump in and say She's deaf!"  Because it seems that did scare some"
22:14:08 vonnie good evening to u
22:14:09 ourwiefamily We are all hearing and haven't had a chance to use our sign skills much since I got absorbed in one of our moves and having babies and whatnot and just stopped signing to them
22:14:47 ourwiefamily I think most kids figure it out at some point ... I don't know
22:14:51 vonnie it did scare some? i didn't realize it but if others want to be impulsive and mention me being deaf I don't mind
22:15:14 mom2josh i am not deaf but my first experiences were as a young child and then again as a teenager, if people are raised with tolerance and acceptance it will show and if not...well i don't know..but i was never afraid..it was always fun and interesting..
22:15:34 ourwiefamily I grew up meeting kids that didn't hear or who spoke other languages and we just all figured out a way to play.  I always thought it was fun.
22:15:35 ra_ron No I mean, when I jumped in when achild was approaching Leah, and told them she was deaf, sometimes thy would be too worried to try
22:15:37 vonnie moving and having kids yes they take up your time - like right now Jelani's messing up what I JUST cleaned up
22:16:07 carlisa57 Hi there...I am trying to get the jist of the conversation
22:16:13 vonnie oh oh oh gotcha rachel
22:16:23 carlisa57 sorry to barge in
22:16:35 ra_ron The nice thing is when kids are young, they don't rely on a lot of chatter to get along
22:16:40 signingminionmaker Kids will be kids.  you'd be amazed how quickly some can adapt.  Maybe just let them play and like you just mentioned see what happens.
22:16:53 ourwiefamily is anyone going over to the babywearing chat?
22:16:57 signingminionmaker You're not barging in at all
22:16:58 vonnie right and if both have the same communication they dont understand half of what they a4re saying anyway
22:17:06 mom2josh i also lived in germany and italy and had many friends whom I never ever spoke to but i still think of as great childhood friends...interesting when you look back..i don't even think our parents ever spoke to each other
22:17:24 ra_ron No problem, Vonie and I have deaf chidren and we arae just talking about when they are approached by hearing children, what is our reponse
22:17:37 carlisa57 Great.
22:17:54 carlisa57 I have Deaf parents, Deaf husband and Koda" kids I am a CODA too"
22:18:02 ra_ron AWESOME!
22:18:09 vonnie my neighbors though and my friend's kids just go on and chit chat like nothing - while jelani used ot try and now hes signing
22:18:28 vonnie oh i forgot that it was also my first time to see him trying to sign back to a kid which happened with that girl but she didn't recognize it as well
22:18:36 carlisa57 I get mesmerized with Deaf kids though
22:18:38 vonnie cool carlisa
22:18:44 ourwiefamily That's how my parents handled things ... we would get together w/ families and sometimes the child had a developmental disability or a language barrier of some sort and generally they didn't say a whole lot before hand but we kids always had *great* fun
22:19:02 ourwiefamily CODA?  What does that stand for?
22:19:07 carlisa57 I love it...now that I am teaching the kids to sign, it makes me feel so cool
22:19:14 carlisa57 Child of Deaf Adult (s)
22:19:33 WeeHands what does KODA stand for then?
22:19:34 vonnie lol
22:19:43 vonnie kids of deaf adult
22:19:50 vonnie i think right?
22:19:52 carlisa57 Kid of Deaf Adult is the under 18
22:19:56 vonnie yeah
22:19:57 carlisa57 right
22:20:11 carlisa57 basically talking about minor kids that have Deaf parents
22:20:23 carlisa57 then when we grow up we are our own people, so we are coda
22:20:24 vonnie for me its a whole different perspective bec i always was the only deaf now i have a deaf kid
22:20:36 carlisa57 not everyone accepts this label" thought"
22:20:47 carlisa57 RARE...to have deaf deaf deaf generation
22:20:54 vonnie yeah like interpreters have their own language" and many are CODA"
22:21:05 carlisa57 Oh Vonnie, don't get me started...haha
22:21:20 vonnie ha
22:21:22 carlisa57 I am not an interpreter for job, just an interpreter for life
22:21:30 vonnie gotcha
22:21:36 carlisa57 Wouldn't change my life experience for the world
22:21:37 vonnie was told that their voice" is different as well"
22:21:51 carlisa57 I wonder Vonnie where are you from? Ind perhaps?
22:21:56 ra_ron Minion, did you add your two bits toward getting Signing Time to come to Canada?
22:21:57 vonnie no CT
22:22:00 vonnie but living in AZ now
22:22:16 carlisa57 Did you live in IND 2 years ago and attend Deaf Expo
22:22:18 signingminionmaker Not yet, but I think Sara and I can come up with some good ones
22:22:27 vonnie hey rachel if you go to canada - I WILL fly there!  love Canada
22:22:33 vonnie no i didn't
22:22:33 carlisa57 Rachel, is this the Signing Time Rachel??
22:22:39 WeeHands yeah vonnie!
22:22:41 vonnie yeah the infamous one!
22:22:41 carlisa57 Ok same name but different
22:22:41 ra_ron Vonnie, it would be easier for me to come to AZ
22:22:47 signingminionmaker SEEE!!!!  I have three little ones that would love to meet you
22:22:57 signingminionmaker Hey, my sister lives in Arizona
22:23:01 ra_ron LOL, I am Rachel Coleman of Signing Time
22:23:15 WeeHands i thinking meeting identical signing triplets is worth trip to Toronto Rachel!
22:23:17 vonnie so there's another deaf Vonnie? cool
22:23:18 carlisa57 I am Lisa from Chicago....I have been trying to get ahold of you for a week now
22:23:33 signingminionmaker Thanks Sara!!
22:23:39 bumwrap hi
22:23:40 carlisa57 We talked one time years ago after ST aired on GMA, your husband made me cry
22:23:42 WeeHands hi bumwrap!
22:23:51 WeeHands love the name!
22:23:56 vonnie TRIPLETS how in the WORLD do you all parents do that!

22:33:47 ourwiefamily Thank you very much everyone!  It was very good to meet everyone and get thinking about signing again.  I'm really excited to try.  Dh was looking at those video previews over my shoulder and seemed interested so maybe I'll be placing an order soon!  :)

22:34:08 carlisa57 neat!
22:34:09 ra_ron Hope so!  We would love to have you in the Signing Time family!
22:34:09 WeeHands I promote babywearing because you can't sign to your baby when they are in a forward facing stroller while out on walks.  but there are some great carriers that allow you to wear your baby on your hip so that you can see each others signs
22:34:29 carlisa57 Very neat. Makes sense, right!
22:34:47 carlisa57 Ok well I just came to check this out, so thanks and I would love to pop in again
22:34:56 signingminionmaker there's nothing worse than a baby in a carrier wacking you on the head cause you can't see her signing and she wants somehtin
