Signing With Babies Chat #46, with Sarah Bingham of WeeHands
( www.weehands.com )
1/19/06

5 mamas in attendance

16:03:48 ourwiefamily I just asked the gals in the lounge to point baby signers here if they are looking for us.  :)
16:03:57 frazzledmomof5boys Great idea.
16:03:59 ourwiefamily So I take it you have 5 boys, eh?
16:04:03 frazzledmomof5boys you got it
16:04:08 frazzledmomof5boys how about you?
16:04:09 ourwiefamily I have 4 boys and 2 girls (another on the way)
16:04:18 frazzledmomof5boys congratulations!
16:04:23 ourwiefamily thanks!
16:04:32 frazzledmomof5boys Do you sign with them?
16:05:42 ourwiefamily yes we do now ... starting up again after a long break
16:05:47 ourwiefamily how about you?
16:06:18 frazzledmomof5boys My kids are 15, 12, 7, 4 and 10 months.  I did a few words with my 4 year old and that was really helpful but once he could talk we gave it up.
16:06:38 frazzledmomof5boys I am trying again with the youngest but he doesn't sign anything yet.
16:06:58 ourwiefamily Cool ... our families are similar.  My kids are  14yob, 11yob, 7yob, 5yog, 3yob, and 1yog
16:07:21 ourwiefamily My littlest is just 15mo and she didn't start signing on her own until about 13m though she understood many signs before that
16:07:46 ourwiefamily Now she uses about 30 signs!
16:07:53 frazzledmomof5boys wow!
16:08:16 frazzledmomof5boys I am never sure that I am doing anything right so I don't do very many.
16:08:16 ourwiefamily I had almost given up hope, though, because she wasn't using *any* until so much later than I anticipated
16:08:38 ourwiefamily Have you ever thought about getting the Signing Time dvds ... either from the library or buying them?
16:08:53 ourwiefamily That is where we have learned the bulk of our signs
16:08:59 frazzledmomof5boys I will check to see if the library has them.
16:09:15 ourwiefamily My older kids each know well over 100 signs.  I'd guess around 200?  Maybe more?
16:09:31 frazzledmomof5boys I checked out signing hands a couple of weeks ago but had little time to look at them with the holidays.
16:09:42 ourwiefamily They all love Signing Time (though the two baby signing times ones are a little babyish for the older ones ... but they like the reg ones)
16:10:08 frazzledmomof5boys I will look for Signing Time... any others you can recommend?
16:10:45 ourwiefamily That's pretty  much what we have done to this poitn
16:11:01 ourwiefamily I'm hoping to find some things that are more in depth for the older kids because we have fallen in love w/ signing
16:11:09 frazzledmomof5boys Did you start signing when your oldest was small?
16:11:26 ourwiefamily no not at all
16:11:31 ourwiefamily hi weehands!
16:11:39 WeeHands hi there !!
16:11:43 frazzledmomof5boys did the older kids just pick it up?
16:11:47 frazzledmomof5boys Hi weehands
16:12:05 ourwiefamily We signed when our eldest two were 6 and 4 years old (we knew a deaf man then who was teaching us sign)
16:12:27 WeeHands sorry - my computer kicked me out before!! :(
16:12:38 ourwiefamily I was hoping you would be back!
16:12:43 frazzledmomof5boys me too!
16:12:45 ourwiefamily I was here when I saw you disappear
16:13:20 WeeHands 5boys!
16:13:26 ourwiefamily to quick finish my story ... when he moved away, we slowly stopped signing.  I still used a couple little signs in public to ask for good behavior like no running" or "quiet please" but otherwise we stopped completely"
16:13:37 WeeHands i have 2 kids - how many children are represented in total here!!
16:13:41 ourwiefamily I came to a baby sign chat here after this baby was born
16:13:51 ourwiefamily 13 kids plus on one the way total represented here!
16:13:58 ourwiefamily op, but someone else just came.  :)
16:13:58 WeeHands aaahhh!
16:14:04 WeeHands :D
16:14:11 ourwiefamily so this is the first time we did signing w/ a baby
16:14:44 ourwiefamily The other kids picked it up because we bought the first 6 signing time dvds and my 11yo took it as a personal project to teach it to all his siblings.  So the older 5 learned many signs last winter and started using them a lot.
16:15:01 skrhythm hello
16:15:15 ourwiefamily It really helped us understand our then 2yo a lot better (he has minor speech issues ... just low end of normal for speech)
16:15:20 ourwiefamily hi skrhythm!
16:15:27 WeeHands hi there  skrhythm ! welcoe!
16:15:37 frazzledmomof5boys hello skrhythm
16:15:37 WeeHands welcome!! (i mean!)
16:15:58 ourwiefamily I did think my baby would start signing sooner since all of us were signing, but she thought we were all signing just to entertain her, lol.
16:16:25 frazzledmomof5boys isn't that what life is about?  entertaining babies!
16:16:27 ourwiefamily It's awesome now though.  I've never been able to communicate with a baby  her age like this!
16:16:59 ourwiefamily My husband is in awe.  He thinks it is very cool, though to begin with he didn't really get into it.  But now that our littlest one is communicating so well, he is a huge fan.
16:17:10 frazzledmomof5boys I remember with my 4yo how nice it was when he was crying and upset about something that he could give me some idea of what the problem was.
16:17:20 ourwiefamily yes!
16:17:56 ourwiefamily skrhythm  what age(s) kid(s) do you have?
16:18:17 skrhythm mine are 10, 7 and 21/2
16:18:31 skrhythm not sure this topic really pertains to me!
16:18:44 frazzledmomof5boys have you ever tried signing?
16:19:10 skrhythm not really, no, not intentionaly anyways
16:19:21 ourwiefamily The first time my family ever did sign language was when our oldest two were 6 and 4 ... we loved it then.
16:19:41 ourwiefamily It gave me a discreet way to gently discipline the kids and a fun way for us to have a code language" as a family"
16:19:56 skrhythm oh, i was under the impression it was for younger children who did not speak yet
16:20:00 ourwiefamily Plus, the kids loved meeting up w/ deaf people (we knew one so we would see him or others occasionally) and be able to talk to him
16:20:17 ourwiefamily ASL is for anyone ... just like Spanish or English or Japanese.  It's another language
16:20:38 frazzledmomof5boys my 12 year old is using the internet to come up with signs.  he loves teaching what he can to the rest of us
16:20:42 ourwiefamily But the difference is that we have people who rely on this method of communication right here in our own country ... it is *American* Sign Language afterall.
16:21:16 ourwiefamily But yes, many have found that speaking ASL to babies is very rewarding ... can help the baby communicate wants and needs at a much earlier age.
16:21:18 frazzledmomof5boys it also counts as a foreign language for school
16:21:28 skrhythm yeah, i just thought you all were talking about simpler signs for babies
16:21:35 becnorris has anyone tried to start their own signing playgroup in their area?
16:21:49 ourwiefamily I have found that it increases my little one's vocabulary and helped me understand my garbled toddlers better.
16:21:56 frazzledmomof5boys never thought about it.  how could someone do that?
16:22:02 ourwiefamily Well ... my family uses about 200 signs on a reg basis.
16:22:18 becnorris thats kind of what i am trying to find out
16:22:21 ourwiefamily many of them are pretty basic signs.  We learn the ones we want to learn at this point.
16:22:47 ourwiefamily I haven't set up a playgroup for signing ... but I've set up other groups.
16:22:51 ourwiefamily It's not too hard actually.
16:22:59 frazzledmomof5boys what kind of groups?
16:23:01 becnorris i am not a teacher or instructor in ASL but would like to set up a play group
16:23:02 WeeHands you mean like a signing with baby meetup,  becnorris ?
16:23:09 ourwiefamily Usually the library and maybe little coffee shops and what not will let you put up a notice about the group.
16:23:25 frazzledmomof5boys how do you gauge interest?
16:23:30 becnorris I dont know what you mean by meet up?
16:23:52 WeeHands have a look at this page: http://babysigning.meetup.com/4
16:24:14 becnorris I have made a flier to send out and i was planning on getting it out at community center and library
16:24:41 becnorris no ill have to check it out.  is it for meeting like this online or in person
16:25:02 skrhythm got to run bye for now
16:25:28 ourwiefamily you may also want to consider seeing if you have a health food store in your community that would post it
16:25:46 frazzledmomof5boys it could be really helpful to meet with other families that sign to practice and confirm that you are doing the signs correctly.
16:26:17 WeeHands are there any sign2me presenters in your area that could refer families to you?
16:26:23 WeeHands or that you could partner with?
16:26:31 WeeHands what area are you in  becnorris ?
16:26:39 becnorris yeah i tried meeting with one mom so far but she lives like an hour away and it was really just too much for me and my 2 boys
16:27:06 becnorris outside the seattle Wa are
16:27:09 becnorris area
16:27:46 becnorris I have seen that there are sign2me presenters around here but since i was not a presenter I didnt think about that
16:28:13 frazzledmomof5boys sorry, i have to run.  we are refinancing and i have to fax something in.
16:28:22 frazzledmomof5boys I will check out the transcripts for more info.
16:28:25 frazzledmomof5boys thanks
16:30:01 WeeHands you could definately contact any sign2me presenter to help organize this!  sign2me offices are in seattle area!
