21:06:31 host_littleants OFFICIAL START OF THE __________ CHAT! WELCOME! MY NAME IS _____________ AND I AM YOUR HOSTESS TODAY! THIS CHAT IS TRANSCRIPTED AND POSTED ON THE SUNDAY FOLLOWING THIS CHAT...PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN POSTING TO THIS CHAT. THANK YOU! :)
21:06:47 ourwiefamily LOL ... I like the blanks  ;)
21:06:55 host_littleants oh I missed the fill ins.  Babywearing chat and I am Katie
21:07:11 host_littleants sorry about that.
21:07:26 host_littleants So how has your babywearing been going?
21:07:42 host_littleants I am getting weak and thinking I need a new carrier for the summer to walk to the farmer's market.
21:08:18 ourwiefamily babywearing is going okay ... just very different now w/ my 6th than it once was w/ my younger kids
21:08:34 ourwiefamily Not in a bad way, though ... just different.
21:09:21 ourwiefamily I find that my body is getting old and that I have to be more careful how I carry or I end up w/ a lot of back pain.
21:09:37 host_littleants my mother in law was saying how few options there were when my dh was a baby.  She wished she could have had a sling.
21:09:40 ourwiefamily Of course, that was always true ... so maybe it's just that now I care more!
21:10:12 host_littleants it could definitely be getting worse. you also are watching other kids too so that is more strain on your body
21:10:13 ourwiefamily Now there are so many options, it's hard to know where to start!!!
21:10:54 ourwiefamily yeah ... but I think it's a lot more that when I was younger, I just figured I would tough it through the pain and now I have options that are loving (like big siblings to help w/ the carrying)
21:10:57 host_littleants what did you use to use again? you would think I could remember this from week to week.
21:11:00 host_littleants hi pynki
21:11:04 Pynki Hiya..
21:11:17 ourwiefamily hi pynki
21:11:58 Pynki I used a wrap tonight.. And.. It works well when I get it one just right.. It does take a bit of practise though doesn't it.
21:12:00 host_littleants i do that to my elbow all the time. i figure it is only a few minutes i will jsut carry him. and then by the end of the day i have tennis elbow and don't even own a racket :)
21:12:04 ourwiefamily I used an OTSBH for years, then a rebozo.  I have tried the Maya Wrap but not liked it yet, so back to the rebozo.  Thinking about making a couple though or buying a few different ones.
21:12:34 host_littleants i really recommend either ABC or wraps. they are SO much nicer on your back.
21:12:50 ourwiefamily I like the look of a Mai Tei (sp?) with the wider straps (to spread teh weight)
21:12:53 Pynki I like the unpadded slings..
21:13:15 Pynki But I like the idea of the russet sack carry too..
21:13:17 ourwiefamily I mainly need to spread the fabric over my shoulder for weight distribution but I'm at a point where I really really need it to be over both shoulders.
21:13:26 host_littleants MT are ABC's (Asian Baby Carrier.
21:13:46 ourwiefamily Otherwise, I carry on my right shoulder and it hurts like MAD after a while ... I can't carry on my left side for some reason?!
21:13:47 host_littleants I hit that point a while ago when my second was a chub.
21:14:05 host_littleants i can only carry kids on my left hip.
21:14:23 ourwiefamily Hmmm ... that's good to know.  I'm really desperate.
21:14:34 host_littleants MT aren't that expensive if you are interested otherwise if you sew....
21:14:55 Pynki I only carry the boys over my right shoulder.. On my left hip.. I can still do that with my unpadded sling with the 6 and 5 yr old if need be..
21:15:29 ourwiefamily Yeah ... it's on my right sholder w/ the left hip in use (or in front w/ kangaroo carry etc)
21:15:49 Pynki I have a question about the wraps..
21:16:00 host_littleants okay.
21:16:01 ourwiefamily And I've carried my kids up to 5 or 6 years old w/ a sling, but like I said, I'm getting worn out from using just one shoulder.
21:16:05 Pynki How do you keep the fabric from twisting up on you when you are trying to put it on
21:16:22 Pynki It keeps getting very twisty.. Like thick and ropey..
21:16:24 ourwiefamily What type of carrier do you use again?  W/ rings?
21:16:32 Pynki Which.. Doesn't make it comfy..
21:16:45 Pynki No.. just 5 yrds of 20 inches of fabric.
21:16:51 Pynki gauze weight almost..
21:17:14 ourwiefamily So ... do you tie everytime or keep the same knot?
21:17:16 Pynki I GENERALLY use unpadded ring slings.. But.. I'm branching out into raps..
21:17:19 host_littleants practice is a big part. you have to focus on where you start.
21:17:24 Pynki Tie everytime..
21:17:30 host_littleants what kind of carry/position are you trying first?
21:17:34 Pynki Liam is 22 months and over 30lbs..
21:17:39 ourwiefamily When I tie everytime I have no problem w/ twistin when I put it on.
21:17:45 Pynki I HAVE to tie and untie to get him in and out.
21:18:00 Pynki Any of the cross carries..
21:18:15 Pynki I FINALLY got it after fiddlign around for about an hour..
21:18:19 host_littleants actually didymos has a cross carry that you don't untie.
21:18:35 Pynki I can GENERALLY get the russetsack with no problem..
21:18:36 host_littleants i have a brochure for it, but i am not sure if it is on the internet anywhere.
21:18:41 ourwiefamily I just fold it in half  the long way, then pinch it at the open" side, then swing it around my shoulders like a matador, then hold the pinch, pulling one tighter if needed for that carry, then tie."
21:18:49 Pynki BUT.. I have to be on a step or couch to get him into it..
21:19:20 ourwiefamily So ... does yours get twisted as you swing it around you?
21:19:54 Pynki I put it on cumberbun style.. I think it twists while I'm pulling and tightening..
21:20:14 Pynki And admittedly.. I'm real new to using it.. I just CAN'T seem to get it to not be twisty..
21:20:28 Pynki I don't know how to keep ALL that material untwisted.. KWIM
21:20:33 ourwiefamily Ahhh ... when I do that style, I find I have to be conscious of the process as though I am folding" it rather than just winding it ... that seems to help me a lot."
21:21:05 host_littleants i always pull the fabric out straight and stand infront of a mirror (although sometimes that makes me more confussed.
21:21:19 ourwiefamily I am very conscious of where my fingers are ... what part of the fabric I pinch between them.  If I move my fingers up or down, I think about it and picture as I move the pinch to the proper spot.
21:22:32 ourwiefamily I also have like a spot I know will hit about on my shoulder ... so that is the part I pinch and hold as I swing it up that way.  Then I drop it off"  there and go down, sliding my fingers along to the next "pinch point", then snug it between the legs"
21:22:39 host_littleants is this what you do to get babe on back?  http://www.mamatoto.org/Default.aspx?tabid=189
21:23:28 ourwiefamily And there is something in the way you swing it ... I find I need to get a certain swing" to bring it to the right place w/o a twist.  There are a couple ways to do it, so not just one.  But I like where the fabric has some swing to it and it has a"
21:23:36 ourwiefamily flourish" as I swish it out around me."
21:24:04 Pynki I do the russet sack a bit different..
21:24:17 ourwiefamily I think it's very pretty to watch, though that is not why I do it that way.
21:24:39 Pynki I put the fabric around him. .Then I PULL Him onto my back.. Then I cross it infront of me.. THen I swing it around and cross it in back..
21:26:02 host_littleants i think it might be the pull that gets you twisted.
21:26:31 Pynki I don't generally have twists with that one!! LOL
21:26:34 host_littleants i used to try to do that (if i am understanding you right) and i could never get it tight enough and i would get tangled.
21:26:51 host_littleants which do you get twisted with?
21:27:19 Pynki Any of the cross carries I get twists.. It's all the fabric.. I have to hold it in clumps.. and they twist when crossing.
21:27:53 host_littleants okay, i have to find a site that has te didy variation 1 cross carry. it is so simple
21:29:24 ourwiefamily I don't like to carry on my back so I'm not as much help with that part ... but I can tell you that I learned how to tie on my babies basically on my own because there weren't great pictures online when I learned and no one locallly.
21:29:28 Pynki Sorry to be a pain in the bottom..
21:29:42 Pynki Part of my issue is that Liam is soo old now..
21:29:49 ourwiefamily Practice will help.  If you just keep trying ... you will find your way and your method.  Then you will wonder how you didn't know before.  ;)
21:29:53 Pynki I think this would be much easier if we has started as a newborn.
21:30:05 ourwiefamily Maybe ... but not necessarily.
21:30:39 host_littleants i think it is easiest to start at about 5 mths b/c they feel more sturdy.
21:30:53 Pynki Ok.. Liam is 22 months..
21:30:57 Pynki And BIG
21:31:01 ourwiefamily When did you start trying?
21:31:23 Pynki THis last month.
21:31:24 Pynki LOL
21:31:49 ourwiefamily I started trying to carry when my oldest was about 2yo ... in fact, he would have been at least 2y4m because I didn't get a sling until I had my second baby.  So I was learning on both a newborn and a toddler at the same time!
21:32:03 ourwiefamily I found it easier to carry my toddler because he could cooperate.
21:32:45 ourwiefamily I actually found that I was not comfortable carrying a baby on my back, but yes to a toddler!!  But I still find the weight is too much if I wear a child on my back via a carrier that goes over my shoulders.  I do better w/ ahmacking (not sure sp)
21:33:03 ourwiefamily Have you ever heard of ahmacking?
21:33:11 Pynki I haven't.
21:33:24 host_littleants yeah. when my baby was a baby, i would have my toddler do the back carriers with me first b/c i wasn't afraid to drop him.
21:34:01 ourwiefamily You need a sturdy coat or shirt that has strong fasteners down the front (so not something that will pop open ... like no snaps but a strong zipper or strong buttons are good).
21:34:13 Pynki I finished making a wrap one of my friends ordered.. I put my 5 year old in the back to test strenght..
21:34:20 Pynki I figuire if it holds him it will hold a new born.
21:34:42 ourwiefamily Have the child stand on the couch, then stand in front of him.  Put the coat/shirt on over both of you so his head is peeking up out the neck hole like yours is.
21:35:12 ourwiefamily Then you fasten the shirt/coat up as high as you want to.  Then take a nice long piece of rope or tie or a belt or soemthing and you tie it around your tummy under his bum.
21:35:25 ourwiefamily I like ahmacking even if I can't spell it.  ;)
21:35:34 host_littleants interesting.
21:36:12 ourwiefamily I learned it from a friend who learned it from an Innuit ... it is supposedly a traditional way of carrying their children (though I am taking their word on this).
21:37:15 ourwiefamily I love it because it works in a pinch too ... I've done this when we are out on a trail walk and I forgot to bring a sling but a child is getting too tired.  Usually we have a piece of rope or fabric around somewhere w/ all the kiddos.  ;)
21:38:11 ourwiefamily host_littleants yeah I was always afraid I'd drop my babies too ... those back carries just don't feel as secure to me and my dh was never home when I needed to try them!
21:41:00 host_littleants i had a friend teach me how to do it using her didymos and it felt super comfortable and secure.
21:41:15 host_littleants i only have a stretch wrap so i haven't been able to practice.
21:41:21 ourwiefamily that's what I always felt I was missing ... someone local to teach me.
21:41:30 host_littleants
