WELCOME to babywearing!!! |
|
20:28:07 |
Nancy |
hello |
|
20:29:53 |
mod_littleants |
Hi Nancy welcome. |
|
20:30:13 |
Nancy |
thanks...it's my first time here so not
really sure how this works |
|
20:30:20 |
mod_littleants |
Do you have any specific questions, or
just come to chat? |
|
20:30:43 |
mod_littleants |
well, how it works depends on how many
people come. We just moved the day so
the attendance has still been a little
slow. |
|
20:31:11 |
Nancy |
ok...I came to check out if there would
be new ideas for babywearing :) |
|
20:31:44 |
mod_littleants |
what do you currently use? and how old
are your kids? |
|
20:32:45 |
Nancy |
I only carry my youngest, she's 8.5
months old...I use a frontal carrier
(snuggly), I have a solarveil ring sling
and a denim ring sling...the solarveil
slips so I don't use it much...only when
it's really hot |
|
20:33:44 |
mod_littleants |
Have you tried wraps or any asian baby
carriers such as a podaegi or mei tai |
|
20:34:30 |
Nancy |
no...I was actually wondering if I
should use a tube but I'm afraid it
would be hard to nurse in |
|
20:35:39 |
mod_littleants |
Have you tried tying knots in the solar
veil? |
|
20:35:59 |
Nancy |
oohhh...didn't think of that...good
idea! |
|
20:36:35 |
Nancy |
I was using the snuggly most of the time
for walks but it's getting uncomfortable
as she's growing bigger...I would rather
hip carry than front...:) |
|
20:37:04 |
mod_littleants |
I have always made my own slings and
they start slipping at about 18 lbs. I
hear people with maya not complain of
that, but I am not sure. |
|
20:37:40 |
Nancy |
what about nursing in a maya? |
|
20:37:45 |
mod_littleants |
I usually use a didymos (wrap) on either
my back or my front for our walks and
can go about 3 hours comfortably with my
25 lbs son. |
|
20:38:00 |
mod_littleants |
a maya would nurse easily you just drop
the rings and nurse. |
|
20:38:38 |
mod_littleants |
I don't think it is as comfortable for
long walks though b/c it gets tiring on
your shoulder. For long walks, i think
you want both shoulders and your waist
all involved. |
|
20:39:23 |
Nancy |
ok...like my snuggly |
|
20:39:53 |
mod_littleants |
Well not exactly. |
|
20:40:02 |
mod_littleants |
Do you have the snuggli with the
shoulders and waist? |
|
20:40:07 |
Nancy |
yes |
|
20:40:29 |
mod_littleants |
i have the same one and I don't use it
b/c i don't find it distributes the
weight well. |
|
20:41:03 |
mod_littleants |
Since it is something you are putting
your baby in and then putting on your
body, it tends to pull on certain areas
instead of distributing the weight all
over. |
|
20:41:30 |
Nancy |
that's why I'm looking for something
else...up to now it wasn't a problem as
my dd is small but she's getting heavier
now I get back pains |
|
20:41:59 |
mod_littleants |
if you put the baby directly up to you,
your body takes the weight in a more
ergonomically correct way. |
|
20:42:11 |
mod_littleants |
A simple carrier is the Ergo. |
|
20:42:29 |
mod_littleants |
I find that all the snaps and buckles
aren't really necessary and don't give
me the versitality that I want. |
|
20:42:40 |
mod_littleants |
so i like mei tai and wraps a lot more. |
|
20:43:02 |
mod_littleants |
a wrap is simple (once you learn it) and
you can do front, back, hip carries with
it. |
|
20:43:28 |
Nancy |
that's what I did with my ring sling |
|
20:44:52 |
mod_littleants |
the back and front too? |
|
20:45:10 |
Nancy |
front and hip...but as I said it kept
slipping :) |
|
20:45:17 |
mod_littleants |
depending on the length of the ring
sling, you could probably do some back
carries with it. |
|
20:45:31 |
mod_littleants |
Did you do one shoulder or two on the
front? |
|
20:45:48 |
Nancy |
my denim was good and didn't slip but
it's padded and small I'll have to
change it... |
|
20:45:51 |
Nancy |
I did one shoulder |
|
20:47:25 |
mod_littleants |
you might also want to check out
www.mamatoto.org or www.littleants.com
to look at some other carry options. |
|
20:47:49 |
mod_littleants |
I find that one of the things that helps
the most is to change how you wear the
baby. this way the same body parts
aren't always being over taxed. |
|
20:50:10 |
Nancy |
usually I'll use the snuggli while my
toddler is playing outside so I can
watch her and will pace in the street
while she rides her bike but as I said
earlier...I'm starting to get back pains
because I tend to lean backwards to
re-distribute the weight |
|
20:50:16 |
Nancy |
so I don't fall face first...LOL |
|
20:51:34 |
mod_littleants |
I think the wrap helps elevate that b/c
the baby is being strapped directly to
you and doesn't pull away from the your
body (until they get older and try to
squirm out of it :) ) |
|
20:52:43 |
Nancy |
I also use a carrier for shopping so
I'll have to look at a new thing and
soon... :) I will check out your
websites...do you sell on those? |
|
20:52:49 |
Nancy |
online I mean? |
|
20:54:15 |
mod_littleants |
I sell at Little Ants. The mamatoto
site is a nonprofit babywearing site
that is a wealth of information on the
hows and whys of babywearing. |
|
20:54:39 |
Nancy |
and do you ship to Canada? |
|
20:55:12 |
mod_littleants |
yes i do. |
|
20:55:22 |
mod_littleants |
i ship anywhere but nigeria :) |
|
20:55:27 |
Nancy |
great... LOL |
|
20:55:51 |
Nancy |
I'll have a look at both sites then and
try to find a better type of carrier |
|
20:55:52 |
mod_littleants |
btw how did you hear about the chat? |
|
20:56:36 |
Nancy |
oh...I'm on a forum for breastfeeding
and someone mentioned a chat with Dr.
Newman tomorrow so I came to check out
the sites and signed up for the
newsletter |
|
20:57:04 |
Nancy |
I got a message saying there was a chat
about babywearing this evening |
|
20:58:04 |
mod_littleants |
cool. i am so excited about tomorrows
Jack Newman chat. I am hearing him
later this month at a conference. |
|
20:59:04 |
Nancy |
he did one in Ottawa in may but I missed
it...can't wait to read his chat
tomorrow...he's a great doctor and
helped me alot when my baby was born |
|
20:59:58 |
mod_littleants |
i am glad to hear that breastfeeding is
going well now thanks to him. Now you
just need great ways to carry your baby
and you will be all set :) |
|
21:00:46 |
Nancy |
yes...I love babywearing...I'm just
sorry it never worked with my first...I
guess I was not as informed as I am and
was using the wrong tools |
|
21:01:48 |
mod_littleants |
I did they same with my first. I wore
him in our snuggli, but I did it more
for him then for my ease or comfort. he
was even a skinny little guy. |
|
21:02:59 |
Nancy |
my first never cared for the snuggli...I
had another one, a snuggli ring sling
type of thing and she would scream her
head off every time I tried to put her
in either...my second was carried from
the day she was born... LOL |
|
21:04:35 |
mod_littleants |
i don't think the snuggle ring sling
looks comfy b/c they can't see
anything. maybe my kids are just nosey. |
|
21:06:05 |
Nancy |
that's what I think too...I discovered
the ring sling at a BF support group and
that's when I got the denim one it was
great when she was smaller but it's a
small sling and I don't think she'll fit
in anymore now that she's grown |
|
21:07:16 |
mod_littleants |
she might fit for a hip carry since that
uses about the same amount of fabric as
her whole body used to. |
|
21:08:10 |
Nancy |
I'll have to try it...didn't use it all
summer cause it was soooo hot :) |
|
21:09:18 |
mod_littleants |
yeah i hear you on that. I told my
husband we should have the next baby in
the winter so it is easier to babywear.
even with the indio didymos (which is
extremely breathable) you get hot at 90
degrees. |
|
21:11:04 |
Nancy |
both my girls were born in the
winter...I love it...we'll plan the next
one for winter too |
|
21:11:51 |
mod_littleants |
i have done feb and may and both were
great. |
|
21:12:40 |
Nancy |
I liked establishing a good BF
relationship in the winter when it's not
too hot |
|
21:13:28 |
mod_littleants |
that is true that is nice. it gets
really cold here though so i am always a
little concerned. |
|
21:14:27 |
Nancy |
here too but still we cover them well
and don't go out when it's too cold
unless we drive somewhere then we heat
the car before we leave |
|
21:16:01 |
mod_littleants |
my house is old and it is just cold all
the time. |
|
21:16:13 |
Nancy |
aaahh I get it |
|
21:16:53 |
Nancy |
I was hot all the time when nursing my
babies... so much so my nipples would
invert... LOL |
|
21:17:06 |
Nancy |
that's why I prefer winter babies |
|
21:17:36 |
mod_littleants |
wow you must really get hot esp being so
far north. we are thinking of moving to
WI, and I get cold just thinking about
it. |
|
21:18:02 |
Nancy |
LOL |
|
21:18:15 |
Nancy |
yeah...I'm a hot blooded woman...LOL |
|
21:21:02 |
COZyMOM |
hello |
|
21:21:17 |
mod_littleants |
hi |
|
21:21:29 |
Nancy |
hello |
|
21:21:49 |
mod_littleants |
sorry i was nursing and changing a wet
diaper |
|
21:21:53 |
COZyMOM |
finally a chat where there's people! |
|
21:22:38 |
Nancy |
it's ok...would a mei tai be good for
long walks? I was checking your website
just now |
|
21:22:45 |
mod_littleants |
I am glad to know my chat isn't the only
small one. I don't really do web boards
so advertising is a problem. |
|
21:23:49 |
mod_littleants |
i think it is more comfortable then a
snuggli is. they are really easy to use
and quite comfy. they are great at home
b/c they go on and off so easily. |
|
21:24:30 |
Nancy |
it looks comfy |
|
21:24:39 |
Nancy |
doesn't slip? like the ring sling? |
|
21:25:15 |
walkerclan5 |
Hello. |
|
21:25:35 |
walkerclan5 |
I jsut went to the littleants website!
*smiles*..very cool |
|
21:26:53 |
mod_littleants |
it doesn't slip b/c you are knotting
it. actually the people that the ring
sling was modeled after also just knot
the fabric. |
|
21:26:58 |
mod_littleants |
thanks walkerclan5 |
|
21:27:50 |
walkerclan5 |
You have some really awesome stuff
there. I really like all the different
kinds of wraps. I have only every used
the sling type wrap...but am thinking of
going for the back carrier type fabric
one with this baby. |
|
21:28:46 |
mod_littleants |
i just learned back carries with this my
second and i have to say that life has
been nice. like you can cook without
risking burning anyone. still not sure
what cooking is, but that is what I
hear. :) |
|
21:29:12 |
Nancy |
I find the snuggli leaves deep red marks
on dd's legs...would the mei tai do
something similar? |
|
21:29:16 |
Nancy |
LOL |
|
21:30:49 |
mod_littleants |
no. it holds them frog legged and on
their bottoms instead of daggling by
their crotch. you can go to didymos.de
for more info on why babies should be
frog legged. |
|
21:31:07 |
walkerclan5 |
awesome |
|
21:31:27 |
Nancy |
and if wearing in front can they be
placed face forward of do they have to
face you? |
|
21:32:11 |
walkerclan5 |
can a back carrier be used for a
newborn? I tink I might feel nervous
about that a little bit . and how easy
is it to get it on and off by yourself? |
|
21:32:23 |
mod_littleants |
you can cross their legs over and face
out. the wraps are easier to do outward
facing then the mei tai, but it works
with either. |
|
21:32:46 |
walkerclan5 |
love the look of the mei tai..hmm |
|
21:33:09 |
mod_littleants |
i would say if you plan to back carry
with a newborn and haven't before,
practice without baby first with a doll.
it can be done and is done in many
cultures throughout the world. |
|
21:33:38 |
mod_littleants |
you can also do a mei tai on the back
with a newborn. you just tie the straps
higher to provide head support. |
|
21:33:49 |
walkerclan5 |
but I suppose I could always wear in the
front like you said above....they just
look so dran comfy *smiles* |
|
21:34:48 |
mod_littleants |
it is important to be comfy or you
aren't going to want to wear as much as
your baby wants/needs |
|
21:34:50 |
walkerclan5 |
awesome! I think I need to be getting
one of those. my 3 yo still goes in the
sling jsut about everyday for sling
time. now that bean inside is getting
rounder *smiles* that sling time is
getting a wee bit harder. |
|
