to go to bed and sleep alone for a WHOLE HOUR!!!!! WOW,
I feel like a new person! ;) |

Host_Housepoet |
Breastfeedingisnormal.org is committed to making a
positive difference in the perception of breastfeeding,
to making the practice of breastfeeding normal" again in
our society, and to replacing the onslaught of infant
formula found in today's media with breastfeeding
education and resources. Through political advocacy,
Breastfeedingisnormal.org promotes governmental support
and protection of breastfeeding mothers and their
children. Through education and support,
Breastfeedingisnormal.org promotes healthy alternatives
to formula use, encourages new mothers to begin and
continue breastfeeding, gives mothers the confidence to
nurse their children in public, and gives society the
understanding that breastfeeding is normal." |

Let's start off today with some Nurse IN news |
|
11:02:24 |
Host_Housepoet |
lately we've been hearing a LOT about nurse out's being
world bfing week and all |
|
11:02:30 |
Host_Housepoet |
but it looks like we have a cause in Utah |
|
11:02:38 |
Host_Housepoet |
Mwalton is going to chat with us about that right now! |
|
11:02:43 |
Host_Housepoet |
mwalton - the floor is yours |
|
11:03:04 |
mwalton |
Thank you. There is a local store called the Quilted
Bear that recently flagrantly violated UT breastfeeding
laws |
|
11:03:24 |
mwalton |
they asked a mother (who was even using a blanket even
though she's not required to by law) to either nurse in
the restroom or leave the store |
|
11:03:30 |
mwalton |
She was escorted out by security! |
|
11:03:51 |
mwalton |
More information on the incident can be found at:
http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_2919050 |
|
11:04:21 |
mwalton |
In response to that, myself, along with my friend
Jennifer, who due to an appt couldn't be here today, are
organizing a nurse in |
|
11:04:39 |
mwalton |
It will be held at the offending Quilted Bear located at
the Newgate Mall in Ogden this Friday at 7 PM |
|

Good work mwalton! |
|
11:05:30 |

Utah has a law that protect a woman's right to
breastfeed her child |
|
11:05:31 |
Host_Housepoet |
17-15-25. Right to Breast Feed. The County Legislative
Bodies may not prohibit a woman's breast feeding in any
location where she otherwise may rightfully be,
irrespective of whether the breast is uncovered during
or incidental to the breastfeeding. |
|
11:06:11 |
Host_Housepoet |
There is yet another case of discrimination going on in
Colorado as well |
|
11:06:17 |
Host_Housepoet |
Ariana is going to tell us about that one |
|
11:06:23 |
Host_Housepoet |
Ariana - the floor is yours |
|
11:06:26 |
Mod_ariana |
There have been a couple incidents recently in Colorado. |
|
11:06:41 |
Mod_ariana |
A mother was actually ticketed on a beach in Fort
Collins http://www.colorado.gov/governor/contact.html |
|
11:06:43 |
tristyn |
You'd think the Quilted Bear people would have
learned...Utah already has had this sort of thing
happen. |
|
11:06:59 |
Mod_ariana |
The citation was eventually dismissed |
|
11:07:13 |
Mod_ariana |
But then a woman was asked to move when sitting in the
reception area of the governor's office
http://rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_3982781,00.html. |
|
11:07:28 |
Mod_ariana |
where she was BF I should say. ;) |
|
11:07:43 |
Mod_ariana |
I think these two incidents together show a really bad
pattern |
|
11:07:54 |
Mod_ariana |
In both cases isn't government employees |
|
11:08:14 |
Mod_ariana |
with the second one in the actual Governor's office |
|
11:08:21 |
Host_Housepoet |
To add, Colorado has a great NIP law as well |
|
11:08:26 |
Host_Housepoet |
you can read about it here: |
|
11:08:26 |
Host_Housepoet |
http://www.lalecheleague.org/Law/summary.html#CO |
|
11:08:29 |
Mod_ariana |
I think we need a letter writing campaign |
|
11:08:39 |
Host_Housepoet |
plainly stated C.R.S.25-6-302. Breastfeeding. A
mother may breastfeed in any place she has a right to
be. |
|
11:08:46 |
Host_Housepoet |
exactly. |
|
11:08:52 |
Mod_ariana |
I think we should write Gov. Bill Owens and ask him to
make a statement about breastfeeding |
|
11:09:01 |
Mod_ariana |
esp. since we've just had World BF Week |
|
11:09:04 |
Host_Housepoet |
tell them as bfing mother's we won't be vacationing
there. |
|
11:09:25 |
Mod_ariana |
Honestly I think of CO as a BF friendly state becasue
they have the good law and they have high rates of BF |
|
11:09:41 |
Mod_ariana |
but wtih this kind of harrasment and discouragement it
won't stay high for long! |
|
11:09:55 |
Mod_ariana |
I need someone who is good at putting together a nicely
worded letter |
|
11:10:09 |
Host_Housepoet |
coughtristyncough |
|
11:10:21 |
Host_Housepoet |
;) |
|
11:10:21 |
Mod_ariana |
to Gov. Bill Owens asking him to make a statement about
BF and to make sure his employees are aware of the law |
|
11:10:38 |
Host_Housepoet |
show up at the capital with the law in their hands |
|
11:10:39 |
Host_Housepoet |
:) |
|
11:10:50 |
Host_Housepoet |
which brings us to our next subject. |
|
11:10:55 |
conchispa |
if you tell me what content should go into the letter, i
can try to put it together |
|
11:10:59 |
tristyn |
Interestingly, the contact informationfor the governor
states that if you want a reply to email, you ned to
include a Colorado mailing address. I wonder if that is
an indicator to how receptive he'll be to letters from
nonconstituents |
|
11:11:09 |
Cynica |
what! |
|
11:11:16 |
Cynica |
I have family in Colorado. |
|
11:11:19 |
tristyn |
Also, I hate this keyboard. Hold on. |
|
11:11:37 |
Cynica |
They would be happy to forward some letters from me, I
am sure. |
|
11:12:35 |
Mod_ariana |
I think wiht enough letters even from non CO residents
he'd feel some pressure |
|
11:12:36 |
tristyn |
I need to review the two incidents, and I'll certainly
be writing a letter when I've done that. |
|
11:12:50 |
tristyn |
I'll be happy to post it to LJ when I've done so |
|

I wonder if there is a group in CO that could be
contacted that might already have an in" to the
governor's office (hi I'm new here)" |
|
11:13:16 |
Mod_ariana |
There's some info |
|
11:13:59 |
Host_Housepoet |
Hi Amy! |
|
11:14:01 |
Host_Housepoet |
Welcome! |
|
11:14:04 |
amyfaline |
or state representatives might be another good route to
go--especially ones in tourist areas they might be more
receptive to the threat of a boycott |
|
11:14:05 |
amyfaline |
hi! |
|
11:14:05 |
Mod_ariana |
I'm sure if we come up with one or two sample letters
and contact info and put it up on a page at BFIN |
|
11:14:24 |
Mod_ariana |
We can then find some CO BF lists and distribute it to
them |
|
11:14:28 |
mwalton |
On the maps for breastfeeding and boobiebootcamp aren't
there any members in there from Colorado? |
|
11:14:30 |
galadriel2006 |
hello, all! |
|
11:14:34 |
tristyn |
Thanks for the post with the summarization, Ariana |
|
11:14:37 |
Host_Housepoet |
hello! |
|
11:14:46 |
Host_Housepoet |
there are lots of memebes in CO |
|
11:14:51 |
Host_Housepoet |
let me take a look Mwalton |
|
11:15:16 |
Host_Housepoet |
<lj user=witchbaby33"> - Denver <lj
user="tanoshii_chan"> - Colorado Springs <lj
user=bennygogo> - Fort Carson" |
|
11:15:27 |
Host_Housepoet |
smiley845 - Limon _implied_ - Grand Junction |
|
11:15:36 |
Host_Housepoet |
vespaboy - Denver |
|
11:15:41 |
Host_Housepoet |
those are all the people |
|
11:15:56 |
Host_Housepoet |
I know there has got to be more though in BN but Julie
hasn't updated the list in a while |
|
11:16:03 |
mwalton |
well i'm sure at least one of them would be willing to
let you use their address..adn i bet they'd probably
write letters too! |
|
11:16:05 |
Mod_ariana |
I'm sure one of those people is in a local LLL group or
knows some other BF families |
|
11:16:15 |
Host_Housepoet |
I opened up a can by asking people to reply to that
thread, I got over 80 replies in breastfeeding alone |
|
11:16:47 |
Host_Housepoet |
Ariana, in one of those incidents in CO wasn't there
something about LLL doing a walk through? |
|
11:16:59 |
Host_Housepoet |
oh yes |
|
11:17:00 |
Host_Housepoet |
To counter anti-breast-feeding sentiment, the La Leche
League will hold a World Breast-feeding Week Walk from
10 a.m. to noon Aug. 27 at City Park in Fort Collins."" |
|
11:17:24 |
galadriel2006 |
isn't that a bit on the late side? |
|
11:17:40 |
conchispa |
better later than never. |
|
11:17:43 |
Host_Housepoet |
Yes, that is what I was thinking |
|
11:17:44 |
Host_Housepoet |
BUT |
|
11:17:51 |
Host_Housepoet |
August is World Breastfeeding Month I guess |
|
11:17:59 |
conchispa |
besides, i'm sure there are many more incidents of
breaking the BF law that just don't get the publicity |
|
11:17:59 |
Host_Housepoet |
or breastfeeding awareness month |
|
11:18:05 |
Host_Housepoet |
so you can do anything during the month |
|
11:18:20 |
Host_Housepoet |
the thing that I don't get is that LLL is not an
activist group |
|
11:18:23 |
Host_Housepoet |
in the least |
|
11:18:40 |
Mod_ariana |
I don't think that walk is in response to the negative
NIP stuff |
|
11:18:41 |
galadriel2006 |
there may be another nurse out in DFW in hooters |
|
11:18:52 |
Mod_ariana |
just a pro-bf thing for World BF MOnth |
|
11:19:16 |
amyfaline |
are there really any bf activist groups (besides this
one:-)? |
|
11:19:18 |
conchispa |
even better. promoting BFing is a good reason :) |
|
11:19:31 |
Host_Housepoet |
Yes Amy |
|
11:19:34 |
Host_Housepoet |
there are quite a few |
|
11:19:41 |
Host_Housepoet |
http://nurseout.org |
|
11:19:46 |
Host_Housepoet |
http://lactivists.org |

11:19:55 |

Ariana do you know what that new one is called? |
|
11:20:01 |
Host_Housepoet |
the one you sent me last night? |
|
11:20:18 |
Host_Housepoet |
http://www.nurseherenow.com/default.html |
|
11:20:20 |
Host_Housepoet |
there we go |
|
11:20:24 |
Mod_ariana |
you beat me |
|
11:20:35 |
Host_Housepoet |
hehe |
|
11:20:40 |
Host_Housepoet |
I have the email you sent me |
|
11:20:52 |
Host_Housepoet |
so yes, there are a lot of groups, all spread out across
the US |
