What do you tell your children when they
see formula and/or bottles? |

LLLI Responds to AAP Policy Statement on
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome |
|
12:04:21 |
Host_Housepoet |
Schaumburg, IL (October 2005) La Leche
League International (LLLI) is concerned
about the October 10, 2005 policy
statement on Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome (SIDS) issued by the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force
on SIDS. The recommendations about
pacifiers and cosleeping in the
statement reflect a lack of basic
understanding about breastfeeding
management. |
|
12:04:27 |
Host_Housepoet |
Pacifiers, which are recommended in this
policy statement, are artificial
substitutes for what the breast does
naturally. Breastfed babies often nurse
to sleep for naps and bedtime. The
recommended pacifier usage could cause a
reduction in milk supply due to reduced
stimulation of the breasts and may
affect breastfeeding duration. LLLI
recognizes that safe cosleeping
facilitates breastfeeding. One important
way cosleeping can help a mother’s milk
supply is by encouraging regular and
frequent feeding. Well-known research on
safe cosleeping practices by Dr. James
McKenna, Director of the Mother-Baby
Behavioral Sleep Laboratory at the
University of Notre Dame was disregarded
by the task force. |
|
12:04:32 |
Host_Housepoet |
Also, the obvious omission of input by
the AAP’s Section on Breastfeeding may
account for the fact that breastfeeding
management issues were not taken into
consideration. Dr. Nancy Wight,
President of the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine, comments that
this statement “represents a truly
astounding triumph of ethnocentric
assumptions over common sense and
medical research.” Dr. Wight also
states, “There are many physician
members of the AAP who do not agree with
these recommendations.” |
|
12:04:37 |
Host_Housepoet |
Although the authors do state that
breastfeeding is beneficial and should
be promoted, their recommendations about
pacifier use and cosleeping could have a
negative impact on a mother’s efforts to
breastfeed. The statement causes
confusion for parents and falls
seriously short of being a useful and
comprehensive policy. |

It's a lot to read but a good read |
|
12:05:58 |
galadriel2006 |

bottles, but that nursies are a baby's
favorite way to eat |

galadriel2006 that makes sense |

I think my DD (she's almost 4) just
thinks that the bottles have
'booby-milk' in them...we're not around
alot of ABM-feeding Mamas. |
|
12:07:39 |
Mod_ariana |
I just... I don't want to put down
formula or bottles but I want them to
understand that they are inferior |
|
12:07:45 |
galadriel2006 |
yeah |
|
12:07:49 |
Autumn_Mama |
Yep. |
|
12:07:49 |

ignorant to breastfeeding? |
|
12:08:41 |
galadriel2006 |
don't worry about it |
|
12:08:49 |
downundermum |
lol my 4yo would do that |
|
12:08:55 |
galadriel2006 |
depends on the age of the kid in

i breastfed alot around my younger

|
12:09:12 |

If I'm nursing in front of other kids I
try to be respectful of the parents |

|
12:09:32 |
Mod_ariana |
the kids are rarely bothered by it |

Hi shady :) |

12:12:37 |
shadybrat |
:-) |
|
12:13:09 |
shadybrat |
how are you all doing? |
|
12:13:14 |
Mod_ariana |
We're good. |
|
12:13:29 |
Mod_ariana |
We're discussing NIP in front of other
children |
|
12:13:33 |
shadybrat |
awesome |
|
12:13:40 |
shadybrat |
ah, gotcha |
|
12:13:52 |
Mod_ariana |
I think when you're in front of other
kids it's important to be very casual
about it |
|
12:13:56 |
aceboo |
does anyone else here ALWAYS have other
adults explaining why they couldn't bf,
giving excuses--unasked? |
|
12:13:57 |
Mod_ariana |
teach them that it's normal |
|
12:13:58 |
galadriel2006 |
yeah |
|
12:14:02 |
shadybrat |
it has been a loooonnng time since my
4yo NIP'd ;-) |

12:14:04 |

yup! |
|
12:14:19 |

|
12:14:27 |

time |
|
12:14:38 |
Host_Housepoet |
He doesn't? |
|
12:14:40 |
Mod_ariana |

12:15:17 |
Mod_ariana |
For James he gets so wrapped up in
whatever else he's doing |
|
12:15:32 |
aceboo |
i was getting a makeover and she talked
the whole time about how she tried, it
hurt, baby smart regardless, blah blah,
blah |
|
12:15:40 |
Mod_ariana |
though if it's something low key like if
we're just hanging out at a
friend/family's house then he will want
to nurse for his nap |
|
12:15:53 |
shadybrat |
of course, we're down to one sleepy
nursing session every 7-10 days, so it
is almost hard for me to remember the
constant nursing of a couple of years
ago |
|
12:16:35 |
Mod_ariana |
James has reeeeaaaalllyy slowed down on
his nursing |
|
12:16:51 |
downundermum |
how old is he? |
|
12:16:57 |
Mod_ariana |
he's 2 1/2 |
|
12:17:09 |
Mod_ariana |
He'll usually nurse 3 times a day or so |
|
12:17:27 |
aceboo |
my dd-7mo, has started waking a LOT at
night, she WAS sleeping through most of
the night |
|
12:17:37 |
downundermum |
oh ok my zac 2 1/2 wants to feed every
time his siter does |
|
12:17:38 |
galadriel2006 |
is it normal for a 10.5 month old to be
down to nursing between 2 and 4 times a
day? |
|
12:17:58 |
downundermum |
siter=sister |
|
12:18:02 |
Mod_ariana |
That seems low to me galadriel2006 but
each child is different |
|
12:18:04 |
shadybrat |
how much food is he/she getting,
galadrial? |
|
12:18:19 |
aceboo |
i was trying to fig that out, i thought
his babysitter was nursing, lol |
|
12:18:33 |
shadybrat |
lol |
|
12:18:48 |
galadriel2006 |
he is heavily into solids |
|
12:18:48 |
Mod_ariana |
downundermum that makes sense if he has
the reminder when his sister nurses |
|
12:19:12 |
Mod_ariana |
galadriel2006 at that age my boys were
nursing probably a dozen times a day |
|
12:19:13 |
downundermum |
yes it does mod |
|
12:19:14 |
shadybrat |
i would say that is a hindrance then...
i think 2-4 times a day is on the low
end, too |
|
12:19:20 |
galadriel2006 |
wow |
|
12:19:21 |
Mod_ariana |
but they've always been snacky nursers |
|
12:19:29 |
Autumn_Mama |
Me too Ariana |
|
12:19:34 |
galadriel2006 |
that's probably the difference |
|
12:19:44 |
galadriel2006 |
he'll nurse for 30-45 minutes a shot |
|
12:19:56 |

each nursing session for my boys may
have only been 5 - 10 minutes |

12:36:36 |
aceboo |
she sleeps in a cot? |
|
12:36:56 |

kristenandmadelein - we have almost the
same arrangement, except my son sleeps
on a futon matress on the floor. . . |
|
12:37:03 |
GimmeStarbucks |
Yeah, my son can't fall asleep on his
own. Sometimes if I'm holding him or in
the carseat he'll sleep but usually he
has to nurse to sleep. |

it's nice because I can go in and sleep

sheilds for no reason and now baby has
severe nipple confusion |
|

Viola |

12:43:44 |
Mod_ariana |
Host_Housepoet I didn't even know you

|
12:43:49 |
Host_Housepoet |

Host_Housepoet |

12:44:05 |
Host_Housepoet |
my sister has a son |
|
12:44:08 |
kristenandmadeleine |
how can she wean the nipple sheild |
|
12:44:10 |
Viola |
Yeah, nipple shields seem to be common
around here. |
|
12:44:11 |
Host_Housepoet |
and my brother does as well |
|
12:44:36 |
Darcy |
Host_Housepoet I had no idea you came
from such a big family. |
|
12:44:36 |
kristenandmadeleine |
she giving only bm, but using bottles
alot |
|
12:44:49 |
Mod_ariana |
kristenandmadeleine ummmm |
|
12:45:00 |
Darcy |
kristenandmadeleine it would be _really_
good for her to get off the bottle |
|
12:45:00 |
Mod_ariana |
I'm having trouble formulating my nipple
sheild advice here for some reason |
|
12:45:13 |
Host_Housepoet |
yep |
|
12:45:14 |
Mod_ariana |
Bottles are making it WORSE |
|
12:45:17 |
Host_Housepoet |
well I'm my mom's only child |
|
12:45:23 |
kristenandmadeleine |
baby is nursing alot, but she hates the
sheild |
|
12:45:24 |
Host_Housepoet |
the rest are all my dad's offspring ;) |
|
12:45:33 |
Darcy |
kristenandmadeleine - I had a friend who
had her baby in May and they scared her
into supplementing for a couple of days.
. . |
|
12:45:40 |
kristenandmadeleine |
yea, i told her that. but she has no
support out there |
|
12:45:49 |
Darcy |
after that she only gave baby
breastmilk, but from a bottle. . . |
|
12:45:49 |
Host_Housepoet |
they tried to scare me into it as well |
|
12:45:51 |
Mod_ariana |
kristenandmadeleine is she on LJ or does
she read email a lot |
|
12:45:58 |
Host_Housepoet |
I wish I had known better when Aiden was
first born |
|
12:46:03 |
kristenandmadeleine |
i told her to join us |
|
12:46:03 |
Mod_ariana |
We could get her an adopt a mom mentor |
|
12:46:09 |
Host_Housepoet |
that we could |
|
12:46:10 |
Darcy |
and by 10 weeks she was done
breastfeeding. . . |
|
12:46:12 |
Mod_ariana |
she doesn't even need to join LJ |
|
12:46:17 |
kristenandmadeleine |
im helping her out as much as i can |
|
12:46:17 |
Mod_ariana |
it could all just be over email |
|
12:46:21 |
Darcy |
Have you recommended a nursing honeymoon
to her? |
|
12:46:26 |
kristenandmadeleine |
she is |
|
12:46:36 |
Mod_ariana |
We have a few adopt a mom mentors who
have gotten past nipple sheilds |
|
12:46:41 |
kristenandmadeleine |
baby is pigging doen every 1.5-2 hours |
|
12:47:00 |
Darcy |
That is great. Tell her that there is
hope and that her baby can do this and
she can do it. |
|
12:47:02 |
kristenandmadeleine |
he is on the breast alot, but with that
damn sheild |
|
12:47:13 |
downundermum |
whats a nurseing honeymoon? |
|
12:47:15 |
Mod_ariana |
She needs to be as relaxed as she can
be. |
|
12:47:25 |
Darcy |
If she has time for the nursing
honeymoon then maybe she should get rid
of the shield. |
|
12:47:25 |
kristenandmadeleine |
and in the middle of the night it
frustrates her |
|
12:47:30 |
Mod_ariana |
If she's real anxious about getting him
off the sheild he'll sense that |
|
12:47:51 |
Viola |
I had a friend who used a shield, and
she just kept trying until one day her
daughter nursed without it. I hear
similar stories |
|
12:47:57 |
Darcy |
downundermum a nursing honeymoon is when
you ditch all of your commitments other
than baby for 24-72 hours or more. . . |
|
12:47:59 |
Mod_ariana |
The advice is always try to nurse
without the sheild. If it doesn't work
that's fine then just use it |
|
12:48:03 |
Viola |
and I can never really find a specific
suggestion there, you know? |
|
12:48:08 |
Darcy |
and just spend that tim in bed nursing -
skin to skin with baby. . . |
|
12:48:19 |
Mod_ariana |
Then about 5 - 10 minutes in when baby
is nursing well with the sheild try to
slip it away and re-latch quickly |
|
12:48:46 |
Mod_ariana |
and if it doesn't work then that's fine,
just bring the sheild back. |
|
12:48:48 |
kristenandmadeleine |
downunder= its just getting in bed
topless with babe anddoing nothing but
nursing |
|
12:48:54 |
aceboo |
i' have to go, dd is off to school |
|
12:49:06 |
Mod_ariana |
Keep trying that and one of the times
it's likely to work. |
|
12:49:17 |
aceboo |
thanks ladies :bf :D |
|
12:49:18 |
downundermum |
sound slike my life sometimes |
|
12:49:19 |
kristenandmadeleine |
dammit, ariana i got kicked and missed
that |
|
12:49:34 |
Mod_ariana |
Also babies tend to be more willing to
take a bare breast when they are just
about asleep or when they just wake up
or when they are in a bath with mommy. |
|
12:49:41 |
kristenandmadeleine |
i said to do her bare breast when he is
sleepy |
|
12:49:43 |
Darcy |
downundermum - I'm sure it does with 3
nursing babies! |
|
12:50:03 |
Mod_ariana |
kristenandmadeleine let me email this to
you |
|
12:50:57 |
Viola |
My niece had a baby last December and
was doing OK until her baby got severe
jaundice and the nurses and doctor told
her she had to use formula for awhile. |
|
12:51:30 |
Viola |
She never really went back to
breastfeeding after that. Now she is
having another baby on December 8th, and
I have no clue if she is even going to
try this time. |
|
12:51:47 |
Mod_ariana |
kristenandmadeleine are you on LJ? |
|
12:52:07 |
kristenandmadeleine |
yea, im on the breastfeeding community
Jellho |
|
12:52:23 |
Mod_ariana |

|
12:52:31 |
Darcy |
Oh - hi Jellho. |

12:52:35 |
kristenandmadeleine |

|
12:52:45 |
kristenandmadeleine |
but just frustrated. im trying to get
her involved in LLL |
|
12:52:50 |
Darcy |
It's confusing when people use different
names different places. I'm psyko_kitty
on LJ. |
|
12:52:53 |
kristenandmadeleine |
hey Darcy |
|
12:52:59 |
kristenandmadeleine |

12:53:13 |
kristenandmadeleine |
I know. I should log in next time with
jellho |
|
12:53:26 |
Darcy |
I'm thinking of changing my journal
name. |
|
12:53:38 |
Darcy |
I chose the name long ago when I was TTC
and needed to keep it anonymous. |
|
12:53:42 |
Mod_ariana |
You know what I'm going to do
kristenandmadeleine I'm going to create
a post in breastfeeding about nipple
sheilds and put the info I have and then
ask for more advice |
|
12:53:55 |
kristenandmadeleine |
great! |
|
12:54:02 |
kristenandmadeleine |
Then can we put it in the memories? |
|
12:54:04 |
Darcy |
Mod_ariana that's a good idea. We
should have that info in the memories. |
|
12:54:07 |
Mod_ariana |
YES |
|
12:54:12 |
kristenandmadeleine |
great! |
|
12:54:17 |
Host_Housepoet |
great idea |
|
12:54:22 |
Mod_ariana |
And it can help not only your friend but
anyone else who sees it |
|
12:54:27 |
kristenandmadeleine |
I need to go to the LLL meeting here.
Kelly from kellymom is our leader |
|
12:54:32 |
Mod_ariana |

|
12:54:50 |
Autumn_Mama |
How cool |
|
12:55:09 |
Autumn_Mama |
(the LLL thing, not the lag :P) |
|
12:55:09 |
Darcy |
We have a really active LLL chapter

|
12:55:17 |

|
12:55:22 |
Darcy |
A boobie celebrity. . . |
|
12:55:24 |
kristenandmadeleine |

car |
|
12:55:33 |
kristenandmadeleine |
i know! When I talked with our other
leader I told her. |
|
12:55:37 |
Mod_ariana |
kristenandmadeleine I'm in the same boat
with the one car family |
|
12:56:00 |
kristenandmadeleine |
And I used to get soo afraid driving
with baby bymyself that i didnt want to
try it. but im better now |
|
12:56:17 |
Darcy |
I hate driving when my son is upset. |
|
12:58:05 |
Host_Housepoet |
