I've got a question for you. How bad is eating dark
chocolate? |
|
11:02:02 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I just gave you administrative privileges" so you will
be able to type more characters in the box" |
|
11:02:43 |
nutritionmagician |
One of my favorite questions! I'm a dark chocolate lover
so I've thrilled to see all the info now that tells us
it's good food! It's got good anti-oxidants anda couple
ounces 2-3 times a week is good for most people unless
you have severe blood sugar issues or a chocolate
allergy, or have a sugar addiction you can't master. |
|
11:03:36 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
That's good to hear... but on so many of these
elimination diets it is a no no |
|
11:04:03 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Let's see if cuddlebaby comes to this room, if not I'll
go get her |
|
11:04:45 |
nutritionmagician |
The University of Mich INtegrative Health Care program
now includes it in their food pyramid! Well on an
elimination it wouldn't be good but an ED is for time
limited period usually for a specific purpose. |

I'm happy to take questions or I also have some ideas

this is one chat I have been wanting to be a part of for

11:10:49 |

wow, very interesting!! |

wish more around here would learn about nutrition. |
|
11:11:17 |
nutritionmagician |
where's around here" cuddle?" |
|
11:11:52 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I agree. I went on an elimination diet to cure my
daughter's ezcema-and it worked. My eating dairy will
trigger it. She's mostly breastfed- a little food,
recently. |
|
11:12:11 |
cuddlebabby |
exactly what I did and for the same reason and got the
same results!! |
|
11:12:22 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Wow! |
|
11:12:28 |
cuddlebabby |
my 2yo had ezcema too.... |
|
11:12:42 |
cuddlebabby |
still can't have peanuts or eggs and can tolerate tiny
bits of dairy.... |
|
11:13:05 |
cuddlebabby |
not much though, can't get him to take a drink of milk.
so weird how they just KNOW what they can and can't
have! |
|
11:13:07 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Interesting. My daughter got it around 4 mo of age.
She's almost 11 mo now |
|
11:13:23 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Have you seen this too, Judy? |
|
11:13:57 |
nutritionmagician |
Good for both of you for taking the cow by the horns!
Dairy can be a problem for so many. What are you using
as an alternative to dairy? Often people use soy and
that also has some big pitfalls that often people are
not aware of. |
|
11:14:31 |
cuddlebabby |
My son was about 18 months before it went away
completely, he's still nursed too at 28 months, along
with his sister who is 7 weeks. |
|
11:14:44 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I use rice milk occasionally. I knew about soy,so I
stayed away from that. |
|
11:15:08 |
cuddlebabby |
I think I need to go no dairy again too cuz baby girl is
gassy and projectile vomiting at least once a day.... |
|
11:15:23 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Wow! |
|
11:15:42 |
cuddlebabby |
I bought some soy milk, wasn't too impressed, just
aren't using any substitutes.... |
|
11:16:27 |
nutritionmagician |
Have either of you tried raw milk and if so, did it
cause the eczema to come back? Raw milk can often
prevent the development of skin allergies. Goats milk is
sometimes used as an alternative for dairy allergy
babies. |
|
11:17:02 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I did try raw goat's milk, and even made the goat's milk
kefir from it, but she still reacted |
|
11:17:10 |
cuddlebabby |
no not since I had my family. My mom and dad used raw
goats and cows milk for my sibs allergies.... |
|
11:17:31 |
cuddlebabby |
I've since heard that raw milk is so much better than
the place where we used to get it..... |
|
11:17:34 |

It makes me think I have leaky gut, yeast, and/or other
digestive issues |

pastueriozing kills all the helpful goodies but just be
sure the dairy is using clean procedures and use within
a 5-7 days |
|
11:19:27 |
cuddlebabby |
i have tons of digestive issues, probably all DOES
involve dairy.... |
|

11:20:40 |

I mean, like sick, with diarrhea.... |
|
11:20:50 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Have you heard of the Specific Carbohydrate diet? I
just heard about it recently, it is supposed to heal all
that |
|
11:20:57 |
nutritionmagician |
IT could be dairy but there are so many other things
that affects digestion--lack of live enzymes, yeast
overgrowth, diet too high in carbohydrates, sugar, other
food allergies, to name a few |
|
11:21:20 |
nutritionmagician |
SCD is very helpful for many |
|
11:21:26 |
cuddlebabby |
yeah, I think I'll start back on my probiotics..... |
|
11:22:00 |
cuddlebabby |
had yeast in pregnancy, fortunately, none now, on nipple
or vag, but do have some under breasts. |
|
11:22:20 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Judy, how do you determine what is going on? |
|
11:22:45 |
cuddlebabby |
carbs, big issue. GD in pregnancy...probably why my
baby was born with ZERO yeast (other three were) cuz I
was zero carb in pregnancy. |
|
11:23:14 |
cuddlebabby |
hmm, need to google SCD |
|
11:23:23 |
cuddlebabby |
Judy, I'm at your website, very nice.... |
|
11:23:56 |
nutritionmagician |
I takea health history and look at a food diary for each
person. Then it's a process of elimination starting with
the most likely suspects. I work with specific dietary
regimens and supplements mostly to see if we can
eliminate the problems. |
|
11:24:24 |

Thanks you cuddle--one of my summer projects is to

And I guess I should ask, are most of your nutritin

stay on the cutting edge of nutrition and nutrition
politics. WOW cuddle! you have got your hands full,

what is
www.cuddlebaby.com ? (I'll go visit after the chat) |
|
11:29:18 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I've gotten confused... some say not to eat grains,
others say only if soaked, etc |
|
11:29:27 |
cuddlebabby |
what has been your belief about foods mom eats actually
getting to the baby? |
|
11:29:55 |
cuddlebabby |
I sew and sell diapers, slings; my biz partner sewing
cloth menstrual pads and nursing garments. |
|
11:30:30 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I've kind of gotten to the point where I don't know what
to eat, especially for breakfast. I've never been a fan
of eggs, bacon, sausage, etc |
|
11:30:53 |
cuddlebabby |
breakfast I found was the toughest too when I was gd |
|
11:31:00 |
cuddlebabby |
need to get back on that too. |
|
11:31:05 |
cuddlebabby |
hard boiled egg? |
|
11:31:07 |
cuddlebabby |
yogurt? |
|
11:31:15 |
nutritionmagician |
Mom's food definetly becomes baby's food. So it's
important to eat with that in mind. Studies show for
example that if mom eats trans fats, breast milk has
trans fats in it. :-( |
|
11:31:44 |
cuddlebabby |
didn't know that, and I'm a LLL leader.... |
|
11:31:51 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
What recommendations do you have for what moms should"
eat?" |
|
11:31:56 |
cuddlebabby |
I know flavors of garlic and onion go through |
|
11:31:58 |
nutritionmagician |
What's gd? |
|
11:32:12 |
cuddlebabby |
argued lots about whether removing dairy from my diet
would do anything for the baby. |
|
11:32:25 |
cuddlebabby |
gestational diabetic |
|
11:32:40 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I think removing dairy could do a lot |
|
11:32:46 |
cuddlebabby |
so no more oreos huh? (kidding) |
|
11:33:13 |
cuddlebabby |
yeah... |
|
11:33:19 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
It is hard to make nutritious meals when you are trying
to take care of little one (s) |
|
11:33:23 |
cuddlebabby |
have you found that dairy is number one allergy? |
|
11:33:43 |
cuddlebabby |
moms helping moms with young children have found that
dairy is number one allergy. |
|
11:33:56 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I've heard that too |
|
11:33:58 |
nutritionmagician |
One thing that's important is not to eat a low fat diet.
Baby needs lots of healthy fat for brain, nervous
system, and isual development. Long chain fatty acids
from hormone free milk, eggs and mercury =free fish (if
you can find it) or fish oil supplements that have been
molecularly distilled to remove toxins, are all good
sources. |
|
11:34:26 |
cuddlebabby |
like avocadoes and macadamia nuts? |
|
11:34:42 |
nutritionmagician |
Dairy, corn, wheat and soy are tops, but dairy is by far
most common. |
|
11:35:21 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
What is your take on eating grains? |
|
11:35:24 |
cuddlebabby |
I had my son's (the ezcema one) blood tested, positive
for wheat, eggs, dairy and peanuts... |
|
11:35:42 |
nutritionmagician |
avocadoes and mac nuts are healthy fats but they're not
long chains. Typcially long chains come from animal
protein and vegetable and nut sources oare medium and
short--still good for you but not a substitute. |
|
11:36:13 |
cuddlebabby |
so leftover steak for breakfast then huh? :) |
|
11:36:28 |
nutritionmagician |
if your stomach likes it, go for it! |
|
11:36:39 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I think that is what I'll start eating! |
|
11:37:04 |
cuddlebabby |
I love to put left over meats on my salad the next day,
YUM! |
|
11:37:36 |
nutritionmagician |
Eggs, omelettes, leftover chicken and veggie stir-fry,
whatever appeals to you is great. |
|
11:38:26 |
cuddlebabby |
thanks for the scd website.... |
|
11:38:38 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
you are welcome |
|
11:39:00 |
cuddlebabby |
the omelette idea is good.... |
|
11:39:25 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Yeah, I could try that |
|
11:39:50 |
nutritionmagician |
Sarah--you aksed earlier about soaking grains versus
not. Soaking them creates a slight fementatin which
deactivates the phytates. This is good b/c phytates bind
with major minerals like calcium and zince and prevent
their absorption. Of course, if one is dealing with
yeast overgrowthgrains or doing the SCD grains should be
omitted temporarily |
|
11:40:14 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Thanks, Judy |
|
11:41:35 |
cuddlebabby |
I was just wondering about that... |
|
11:41:43 |
nutritionmagician |
Something you could do cuddle to deal with the time
issue and food prep is have hard-boiled eggs on hand.
Omelettes are best fresh but I've certainly had leftover
omelette and enjoyed it so you could make up some in
advance. Add lots of veggies. |
|
11:41:54 |
cuddlebabby |
it's so hard to take wheat (especially) out of an
american diet... |
|
11:42:13 |
cuddlebabby |
thanks judy |
|
11:42:17 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Going out to eat is really h ard if you eliminate dairy
and wheat! |
|
11:42:21 |
nutritionmagician |
There'sa wonderful egg white protein powder available
www.jayrobb.com |
|
11:42:55 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Is that kind better than others? for example, I bought
some hemp protein powder the other day! |
|
11:43:37 |
cuddlebabby |
now I sew with hemp, used hemp lotions, but I have never
heard to hemp protein...thanks for the education |
|
11:43:55 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
:D |
|
11:44:47 |
nutritionmagician |
If you stick with protein and veggies you can usually
find something. I always ask for a double order of
veggies in place of potato or rice (though sometimes I
eat those). It can be agood idea to order salad right
away so you aren't starving for the bread. I often ask
for the wait person to take back the bread so I don't
have to stare at it. |
|
11:45:47 |
nutritionmagician |
Hmm, I don't know about hemp Sarah. Whey and Egg white
protein are the most biologically available so they give
you more bang for your buck. |
|
11:46:14 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Okay, good to know! :) |
|
11:47:08 |
nutritionmagician |
In Take Two Apples I have a page of recipes for protein
smoothies (master recipe is on web site using whey but
you can substitute egg white) By adding fruit, nut
butters, and flavor extracts you can make all kinds of
great variations. |
|
11:47:53 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
My husband just ordered a Magic Bullet" blender! He's
finally "cooking" smoothies!" |
|
11:48:03 |
nutritionmagician |
The egg white protein has a little less stevia (herbal
sweetener) than the whey so you may need to sweeten it a
bit. Do you both know about Stevia? |
|
11:48:36 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Yes, do you have a good source for it? There seems to
be a lot of variation in quality |
|
11:50:23 |
nutritionmagician |
I've used Nu Nutritionals which I get through Whole
Foods or Planetary Formula which I order for my retail
shop. I prefer liquid because I can standardize amounts
more in recipes. The NOW brand is notoriously bad
tasting! |
|
11:52:51 |
cuddlebabby |
stevia is herbal sweetener? |
|
11:52:59 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
What do you recommend to get rid of yeast, and how do
you know if you have" it?" |
|
11:53:23 |
cuddlebabby |
acidophilus.... |
|
11:53:31 |
cuddlebabby |
do you mean vaginally? |
|
11:53:39 |
cuddlebabby |
or baby's mouth/bottom? |
|
11:53:42 |
cuddlebabby |
or nipples? |
|
11:53:54 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
No, in the stomach-digestive system |
|
11:54:15 |
cuddlebabby |
we call that 'systematic' |
|
11:54:27 |
cuddlebabby |
if baby has it in mouth and bottom then obviously.... |
|
11:54:42 |
cuddlebabby |
and I probably have it in my gut too now that I am
reading your website.... |
|
11:54:46 |
cuddlebabby |
and the sbc one... |
|
11:55:09 |
cuddlebabby |
so you'd recommend a change in diet to get rid of yeat I
assume, right? |
|
11:55:40 |
nutritionmagician |
Yes cuddle, it's a plant origianlly from South America
but now grwon here. IT's been used for decades for
medicinal purpose. It's 300X as sweet as sugar and has
no calories and no effect on blood sugar. It's best uses
I think are to sweeten beverages, sauces, etc. It's not
great for baking where the recipes needs the sugar to
give structural properties (like cake or cookies) and if
too much is used it can havea licorice-like after taste.
I use it alot for homemeade lemonade or making my own
BBQ sauce that has no sugar. |
|
11:56:10 |
cuddlebabby |
wow, that stevia sounds great! |
|
11:56:15 |
cuddlebabby |
lemonade season is here! |
|
11:56:34 |
cuddlebabby |
antifungals to get rid of yeast vag... |
|
11:56:42 |
cuddlebabby |
or on skin.. |
|
11:57:02 |
cuddlebabby |
nystantin is what's normally rx'd for baby's mouth.... |
|
11:57:16 |
cuddlebabby |
I don't though cuz they put it in a sugar base, how
stupid is that? |
|
11:57:27 |
cuddlebabby |
it's as thick and sweet as honey! |
|
11:57:36 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Luckily I don't have yeast infections vaginally and baby
doesn't have |
|
11:57:48 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
but I do get a lot of bloating |
|
11:57:56 |
cuddlebabby |
well that's good sarah! |
|
11:58:03 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
I guess that could come from something other than yeast |
|
11:58:04 |
cuddlebabby |
Sarah is the name of my 7 week old :) |
|
11:58:11 |

but that's cuz I am right now too.... |
|
12:00:16 |
cuddlebabby |
poor thing is just in pain... |
|
12:00:21 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Yeah, projectile vomiting! THat must be scary! |
|
12:00:25 |
nutritionmagician |
For yeast you need to remove any foods from the diet
that feed yeast which would be sugar or sugar containing
foods, or foods that break down into sugar easily. SO
that would be all forms of sugar, fruits, dairy and
flours and grains. For at least a month the diet should
consists of protein and vegetables basically. You also,
as cuddle says want to include an anti-fungal to kill
yeast. I recommend an herbal blend from Nature's
Sunshine called Yeast Funga Detox but there are lots of
herbal products available for that purpose. What most
people miss is the part about not continuing to feed the
yeast while you're killing it. Then you need to add good
bacteria in the form ofprobiotics--take these away from
food, usually at night and away from your fungal killing
herbs. |
|
12:00:36 |
cuddlebabby |
I'm thinking take some probiotics and get rid of refined
sugar, right judy? |
|
12:02:33 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
Judy, it is 10 am and I am realizing our scheduled time
is over |
|
12:02:40 |
nutritionmagician |
Yes on refined sugars but remenber lots of other foods
have sugar or break down to sugar and that feed's
theyeast. Breads, pasta, grains, honey, anything
containing lactose and anything containing fermentation |
|
12:03:06 |
nutritionmagician |
Oh well that flew by. I hope this was helpful to each of
you. I know I enjoyed it! |
|
12:03:07 |
cuddlebabby |
so pretty much, atkins? |
|
12:03:20 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
We can keep going but I realize you might need to go |
|
12:03:40 |
Mod_SarahPhD |
It was great! Thank you som much! |
|
12:03:59 |
cuddlebabby |
thanks so much judy!! |
|
12:04:14 |
cuddlebabby |
I need to go too, play referee in the living room and
dress people :) |
|
12:04:15 |
nutritionmagician |
Just about but watch things like soy sauce (fermented)
and stick to lemon juice with olive oil for salad
dressings. |
