11:00:07 SaraD Feeding your family on a Budget\
11:00:21 SaraD 9am PST
11:04:57 SaraD Well, I guess I'll get started just in case some people pop in and out while I try and locate some visitors for this chat.
11:05:10 SaraD 1. I wanted to just briefly introduce myself.
11:18:19 SaraD Good morning Misty
11:19:23 SaraD Good Morning Mummoth.
11:19:44 SaraD I'm Sara a Stay at home mom to two wonderful boys. Age 10 and 4
11:20:31 SaraD I like to eat but I really don't have the money for it. *)
11:21:38 SaraD I have been on the internet for about 10 years now and have seen a lot of different sites on budgeting and saving money. I just closed down one of my sites Mommie-Care which had some very useful information in it.
11:22:30 SaraD My goal in doing this chat for Tina and MommyChats, is to provide different ideas and ways to save money in the market but at the same time eating a healthy diet.
11:22:45 SaraD How many of you eat organic? or have to be on a special diet?
11:25:34 SaraD Doany of you have babies that can't drink milk or eat eggs or wheat?
11:28:19 misty ok i am here
11:28:23 SaraD I had a whole chat made out .
11:28:38 SaraD Glad I found you. I was talking to myself the whole time I guess...
11:28:51 SaraD No wonder no one was answering my questions? lol
11:28:56 misty i didnt see you say anythiing
11:29:15 SaraD I think you where in the Mommys Lounge and I was in here
11:29:21 SaraD that is way odd
11:29:32 misty oh  well it showed you as there
11:30:05 SaraD Anyway just talking about budgeting and food and wondering what diet you have? Special? wheat free ? organic? no special needs?
11:30:38 jseeley hi everyone
11:30:46 misty hi
11:30:53 jseeley hi sara
11:30:57 jseeley hi misty
11:30:58 SaraD The folks who frequent this site are somewhat new mommies or mommies trying to live a more conscious lifestyle
11:31:00 SaraD Hi Jen
11:31:03 misty no special if it comes from a box we eat it
11:31:06 SaraD Thanks for dropping by
11:31:34 SaraD Do you ladies Use Coupons when shopping? Either online or offline?
11:31:53 misty not really my hubby does the shopping and he forgets them
11:32:23 SaraD I was thinking of starting a coupon train with this group but I think I'll wait till we grow a bit.
11:32:37 SaraD Jen?
11:32:53 jseeley i clip them out
11:33:22 jseeley i really need to start using them though
11:33:25 SaraD Do you find that you use them all or use some and trash most?
11:33:38 jseeley most of them i use
11:34:22 SaraD Great.
11:35:04 SaraD What do you ladies want to learn about saving money and time in the kitchen?
11:36:12 SaraD You should check out http://www.budgeting101.com  They have an awesome database of recipes
11:37:26 SaraD They have loads of mixes you can pre-make and then use when needed
11:37:57 SaraD Another thing that saves me time in the kitchen is freezer cooking or OMC  once a month cooking (for me it's more like once a week cooking)
11:38:00 misty we buy one meal at a time
11:38:20 SaraD You go out most of the time or do you or your husband cook?
11:38:52 misty we cook cant afford to go out
11:38:55 misty he cooks
11:39:16 SaraD Wow, misty, he shops, he cooks, does he work too? How about clean?
11:39:37 misty he work and cleans and laundry
11:39:42 SaraD That's pretty cool.
11:39:51 SaraD You really have a special guy then.
11:40:05 misty yep i help of course
11:40:26 SaraD My hubby does all that too but I do or at least try to help out and give him a break because he also works
11:40:33 SaraD Of course.
11:40:48 SaraD It's just nice to hear a guy pulling his weight in the relationship
11:41:27 SaraD Do you ever cook? or try new things at home? Like foods from different cultures?
11:41:31 mummoth hi
11:41:39 SaraD Hi
11:41:54 SaraD I'm Sara the Hostess of this chat
11:42:04 SaraD Nice to have you stop by
11:42:57 SaraD I was just going into feeding our families, how we do it, do we use coupons, freezer cooking, have special diets? etc...
11:43:07 mummoth is this the feeding your family on a budget chat?
11:43:13 SaraD Yes it is.
11:43:24 mummoth good!
11:43:37 SaraD Not very many people here but this is the second one I did. First one I was the only one that showed. LOL
11:43:53 mummoth we've fallen into the take-out trap... trying to get back on track
11:44:03 SaraD What kind of things are you looking for your family?
11:44:10 mummoth lol! no whre to go but up then!
11:44:11 SaraD Any special needs or diets?
11:44:32 jseeley im back sara
11:44:54 SaraD Yea, Okay. If you are really used to going out a lot then I suggest at least one dinner at home. (to lessen the shock )
11:44:58 SaraD Hi Jen. wb
11:45:00 mummoth DD can't have eggs & a few other things, but she's just , so it's not a big deal yet
11:45:22 SaraD Have you looked into eggless recipes?
11:46:00 mummoth lol! we're not that bad off... we're just renoing our kitchen & it was soooo much easier to just have food magically appear
11:46:27 SaraD I know a lady in another forum who is testing some eggless, gluten free, and I think dairy free recipes  and will eventually be selling them like pre-mixes
11:46:36 SaraD Do you love cooking then?
11:46:44 SaraD yOu or your husband?
11:46:48 mummoth so far I'm just not feeding her things that have eggs in them... she also reacts to dairy & tomatos (but not *every* time, so I don't know whats up there)
11:47:13 mummoth I don't mind cooking
11:47:36 mummoth I do it & my husband wrangles the kids in the livingroom so I can cook in peace
11:47:58 SaraD Sometimes with allergies it is overexposure when you really see it. Like feeding her milk 3 days ... you'll usually either see right away or after a few days of feeding the same food...
11:48:08 misty i hate milk
11:48:13 misty i dont drink it
11:48:16 SaraD I didn't know my son was milk intolerant until I actually started looking for it.
11:49:04 mummoth Ive heard another sign of an allergy is when they *love* a certain food & she would gorge herself on cheese if I et her
11:49:08 SaraD But then, neither did his Father until he started noticing an upset stomach after drinking milk, eating cheese, etc.... I think if we listen to our bodies it will tell us what to eat and what not to eat
11:49:09 jseeley wow sara you are starting to have a good turnout for this
11:49:28 SaraD Cool. Thanks Jen.
11:49:49 SaraD I just wanted to let you all know about a site I use regularly.
11:50:10 SaraD http://www.budget101.com Lots of cool recipes, and mixes you can make ahead of time.
11:50:16 jseeley now why couldnt i lol
11:50:22 SaraD Has saved me a lot of time and $$ in the kitchen.
11:50:36 jseeley thanks
11:50:43 jseeley i sure will use this
11:51:33 SaraD Saving money and time in the kitchen is just all about scheduling really. If you know what you're having for dinner for 5 - 7 days
11:51:54 SaraD Then you will not have to worry so much about the other two meals. For instance:
11:52:02 SaraD B- cereals, fruit
11:52:15 SaraD L- could be soups/salads/breads or sandwiches
11:52:19 SaraD Simple as that.
11:52:50 SaraD You could even plan some take out now and then but make sure it's not a lot as take out is probably 3 - 5x as fattening as homemade
11:52:57 mummoth one thing we did last summer was to buy, pre-marinate & fereze a bulk amt of barbecue stuff... I don't know how much money it saved us, though.... just time
11:53:39 SaraD Time is Money as they say. If it saves my family time, it is saving my family money.... (think of yourself as a hourly wage earner)
11:54:22 mummoth yeah... it saved *me* alot of time... the barbecue is DHs department
11:54:51 SaraD Buying in bulk for most people is a clueless adventure. There really is an art to it. I don't do it as we don't have the space and our tastes change so rapidly so having like 5 lbs of something in the freeze would only be wasteful.
11:55:16 SaraD Cool that was a good deal for you then. It is all ready and all he had to do was defrost and cook.
11:55:52 SaraD A lot of people assume that just by buying in bulk they are saving money, but you really need to keep an eye on a couple of things:
11:56:07 SaraD 1. cost per unit (sometimes it is the same) small or large
11:56:30 SaraD 2. Waste... expiration date can you really use it by the time it expires?
11:56:39 mummoth it's easy for me to buy in bulk... DH is a creature of habit... he has a bowl of cereal & 4 eggs (blech, I know!) every morning & peanut butter sandwiches, 2 apples & granola bars, & yogurt for lunch every. single. day
11:56:41 SaraD 3. Bulk veggies is a no no
11:57:17 SaraD Great for you. Habit is sometimes a good thing. You really know what you are buying then.
11:57:27 SaraD Do you have a farmers market close by?
11:57:30 mummoth Why are bulk veggies a no-no? (not sure I want to know!)
11:58:06 SaraD Most people don't eat that many, and they will rot before weeks end. It is a waste of time and money.
11:58:36 mummoth Hmmm... so they're not a no no if you're using it all then?
11:58:43 SaraD Eating a wilty veggie or off fruit will not bring people good memories of fruit and veggies and will most likely turn them off
11:59:17 SaraD Right. I know that people will see something on sale say Cool and buy like a whole bunch but really each a few and the rest is waste
11:59:36 mummoth okay... we're just wierd then... I buy bulk & we're still running low by the end of the week
11:59:39 SaraD But I guess it really could be good if you compost or have a rabbit or pig or other animals to
11:59:50 SaraD How large is your family?
12:00:26 SaraD It just means you are very healthy eaters... Veggies/Fruits must be a large percentage of your diet if not 40%
12:00:48 mummoth There's just DH & I & DS whos 3.5 & DD whos 15 months
12:01:23 SaraD Always buy Fruits and Veggies in season if $$ is what you are looking to save. Also, they are the freshest
12:01:25 mummoth we don't get *everything* bulk... but 5lb of carrots & a bulk bag of apples is about 1 wks worth
12:02:06 SaraD Cool. that is great. Carrots and a bag of apples is not bulk in my opinion but I guess really is for most familys.
12:02:23 mummoth plus smaller amts of other stuff of course
12:02:38 SaraD Do you still nurse your youngest?
12:02:50 SaraD Hello Kaylasmama
12:02:51 mummoth yes!
12:03:02 SaraD That saves you on $#$ bill too
12:03:17 SaraD Good for YOU :bf
12:03:35 mummoth nah, good for her... she wouldnt have it any other way
12:03:48 mummoth shes the boss of me
12:03:51 misty i am on a budget or bill or we wouldnt be about to servive
12:04:01 SaraD LOL, they are awesome though huh? You need to enjoy it it really doesn't last forever
12:04:30 SaraD How much do you run each week on a grocery bill? Misty
12:04:31 mummoth lol, I know! Ds nursed until he was nearly 2 & I was a bit sad when he quit...
12:05:02 kaylasmama Mornin all...:)
12:05:27 SaraD On that site Budget101 shes has an awesome menu for tight tight times... just $10/week for 4
12:05:35 SaraD Morning Kayla
12:05:40 SaraD Kaylasmama
12:05:53 SaraD Thanks for dropping by.
12:06:06 SaraD http://www.budget101.com
12:06:43 SaraD It is an awesome article especially if you really do only have $10 left for groceries. (this is not a healthy menu but it will work for a tight week)
12:06:57 SaraD Good morning Cali_smom
12:07:04 kaylasmama Hi Sara...I'll check that out.
12:07:32 SaraD Cool. Did you have specific questions for me? I will be looking into some more things for next week?
12:07:56 SaraD Goals you want to accomplish? Money or Time you want to save? Recipes?
12:08:41 SaraD Misty, that $10 menu could work for you guys on a really tight week. (you and your husband)
12:09:06 SaraD Do any of you make your own baby food? or would you like to learn?
12:09:26 mummoth I just feed DD whatever we're eating
12:10:06 SaraD That's cool exactly what I did Have you tried giving her some soybeans out of the pods...?
12:10:07 mummoth I figure if she can't manage it on her own, she isn't ready fo r it... & it's better for her to start foods later rather than sooner with her eczema anyway
12:10:41 mummoth no I haven't... soy is highly allergenic
12:11:04 SaraD I found that these are great to bring on outings and my DS really loved them. It's surprised me that he liked it..
12:11:08 mummoth I tried chick peas though & she didn't care for them, but she loves beans
12:11:31 SaraD Green beans then? or Snap peas? without the string things
12:11:49 SaraD Yeah, chick peas were a definate no no. He did like blackbeans though
12:12:13 SaraD I mean as far as taste for him. We do give him hummus and he adores it with carrot sticks
12:12:48 mummoth no, kidney beans (DH  rinsed the sauce off his chili for her one night *deep breathe*)
12:12:58 mummoth I would never have done that!
12:13:08 SaraD oh no
12:13:54 mummoth she was fine, so it was okay.
12:13:56 SaraD You can try frozen mango or peach too
12:14:05 mummoth thats husbands for ya, though!
12:14:13 SaraD my boys still like these as snacks better than icecream...
12:14:17 mummoth oh, she loves frozen blueberries
12:15:21 SaraD blueberries are not their favorite I guess some kids don't do textures as well as others. Mine don't care for raw carrots (plain) go figure but will have them with hummus, or carrot juice, and the blueberries or raspberries they don't like unless they are
12:15:25 SaraD freshly picked
12:15:39 misty :banghead
12:16:02 mummoth lol
12:16:10 SaraD I guess it really is the excitement of the picking and they don't really think that this is the same thing mama tried feeding me last week
12:16:26 SaraD sorry misty am I boring you?
12:16:38 SaraD *bleep*
12:16:50 mummoth DD likes carrots but it makes me a bit nervous that she'll choke... cucumbers, apples (well, any fruit, really)
12:16:52 SaraD No
12:17:17 SaraD Oranges were the worst for my first son
12:17:32 SaraD He wasn't able to eat them until almost 7 years old for some reason
12:17:37 mummoth oh, and PEAS... one by one, she won't let me help
12:17:43 misty no computer isues
12:17:53 SaraD My other one doesn't have the same problem
12:17:59 jseeley i just started giving my daughter big people food lol
12:18:00 kaylasmama my dd is 1...I make her food...but she's picky!
12:18:01 SaraD lol
12:18:15 kaylasmama having a hard time with anything that's not sweet
12:18:25 SaraD butternut squash?
12:18:27 mummoth oatmeal is a big treat around here
12:18:29 kaylasmama I mix pretty much everything with fruit)
12:18:36 kaylasmama she loves oats
12:18:43 kaylasmama with fruit and a bit of cinnamon
12:18:49 mummoth Ds likes to pretend we're the 3 bears & DD is goldielocks
12:18:53 SaraD or even millet some kids just adore it others don't
12:18:59 kaylasmama that's cute mummoth
12:19:02 jseeley anyone have any idea when its time to switch them from formula to reg milk
12:19:23 jseeley formula just is so expensive
12:19:26 kaylasmama I've read not to give kids under 1 milk...and not too much after that for a while
12:19:33 SaraD I wouldn't switch to reg. milk yet Jen.
12:19:52 mummoth he usually keeps it up all morning calling me mama bear""
12:19:54 jseeley she is 13 mos
12:19:56 SaraD I mean depending on the formula you are using she is already getting milk byproducts
12:20:08 jseeley enfamil lipil
12:20:11 SaraD Yeah, definately no regular milk yet
12:20:24 jseeley well that sucks
12:20:29 jseeley sorry
12:20:36 SaraD you can introduce small amounts of food but it really isn't necessary
12:20:47 mummoth son't you start by just cutting the formula a bit with milk & slowly move the balance over until it's all milk?
12:20:51 SaraD Why you say that? $$$
12:21:13 SaraD yes, Mummoth
12:21:24 SaraD but not until at least 2 I believe
12:21:34 jseeley definetly for a month of formula it costs over 120
12:21:54 SaraD Have you signed up with the enfamil coupon club thing? they mail out coupons monthly
12:22:03 SaraD Savings sometimes up to $5.00
12:22:28 jseeley yes but for some reason they stopped sending them
12:22:28 SaraD I get them all the time I use to be an active Doula not any longer but they still send them to me
12:23:03 SaraD Just go to their website and sign up or I can recommend you I have referrals still if you'd like one.
12:23:14 jseeley sure thanks
12:23:18 SaraD Most of the clients that I worked with chose Bfing
12:23:23 kaylasmama I need help with recipes on a SUPER tight budget when this topic is done :)
12:23:40 SaraD Cool. What type of foods do you all enjoy?
12:23:54 SaraD Did you see the link to the $10 tight budget menu?
12:24:21 SaraD Jen, just email me and I'll get that to you.
12:24:54 kaylasmama Yes, just checked out the site. Great! I'll be looking into it in more detail. Well, we try and eat organic...and we do eat meat
12:24:57 misty i tryed to click the link
12:25:30 jseeley well i need to get going need to check my Dt business talk with ya later sara thanks so much
12:25:38 SaraD Organic, you can go to most of the name brand products sites and request coupons or sign up for their newsletter and they periodically send you samples or coupons in the mail
12:25:49 SaraD Ok bye jen
12:26:00 kaylasmama Just found that out :) Thanks!
12:26:11 SaraD Annies Horizon
12:26:14 kaylasmama What are you all spending for food?
12:26:18 SaraD Annies is great
12:26:28 SaraD we have $40.00 a week for the 4 of us
12:26:42 kaylasmama We usually spend $60/week for food and everything else...but our budget is at $40 now :(
12:26:55 kaylasmama HOw do you do it Sara?
12:26:55 kaylasmama ??wd????
12:27:07 kaylasmama oops sorry..
12:27:16 mummoth hmmm. another thing I came across (Ill have to see if I can locate it) is a list of what foods are highly treted with pesticides/hericides & wich are lower
12:27:18 SaraD We don't have a car so no gas $$
12:27:22 kaylasmama We have three-me, hubby and Kayla
12:27:35 SaraD excellent list love to have that
12:28:04 SaraD We don't eat a lot of meat cause hubby doesn't care for it. If we do it is usually chicken.
12:28:17 mummoth so if you have a small budget you can get non-organic in the less heavinly treated foods when you cant afford all organic
12:28:24 SaraD We go to the farmers market on saturdays to buy the fruit and veggies for the week
12:28:39 kaylasmama Yep...do that too...(farmers market)
12:28:41 mummoth Ill look & if I can't find it today Ill see if I can get it for next week
12:29:14 SaraD Locally (CA) we have lots of organic farmers and if they have things that they know are about to go" they'll put them at 1/2 off which is what we usually do"
12:29:16 kaylasmama We're coming from eating out all the time and way frivalous spending on both our parts. So the budget thing has been a tough one.
12:29:23 kaylasmama We're in CA too...Santa Barbara
12:29:24 kaylasmama :)
12:29:42 SaraD cool not too far from you... Love SB
12:29:46 kaylasmama Cool...I'm going to try that. Also just learned about CSA with the local farms
12:29:52 SaraD We are way up past Sacramento
12:30:00 kaylasmama Ah....
12:30:21 kaylasmama We just sold one car, so we're down to one.
12:30:24 kaylasmama No Cable
12:30:28 kaylasmama no cell phones
12:30:29 SaraD For those with a bit more money you can opt in to a family organic farm that has a bi-weekly or weekly delivery co-op
12:30:34 kaylasmama no ANYTHING :) hehehe
12:31:04 kaylasmama I shouldn't say that. We have so much.
12:31:05 SaraD No cable, No car, 1 cell phone on loan from my Father,
12:31:29 kaylasmama Yah...wow. But it's worth it to stay home with Kayla. Just hard on the nerves. Especially for my sweet DH
12:31:39 SaraD Computer will be cut down, at least on time. will be limiting access to the machine" parts of my life and spend more time off line."
12:31:49 kaylasmama Doing that too
12:31:54 kaylasmama sounds like we'rein the same boat
12:32:30 SaraD I have an ebook I can share with you ladies with kids, on things to do instead of watching TV not sure if some of your babies are old enough but will give you some great ideas.
12:32:42 kaylasmama That would be fab
12:32:48 SaraD I'll write a note to myself so I can get the link to you all next Friday.
12:32:56 kaylasmama Have a poopy diaper to change...be right back
12:33:10 SaraD Okay, Recipes does anyone have healthy budget friendly recipes to share?
12:33:34 SaraD Lately for us it's been Rice and whatever for instance:
12:34:06 SaraD Rice plain Rice and Beans (to save time we buy canned plain no salt or anything added) and add them that way.
12:35:05 SaraD Rice with fresh tomato, basil, and whatever hubby likes at the moment. He is a moment by moment (meal to meal) eater so really can't plan until he is ready to eat. I do have an idea but it really just comes together as each meal comes around
12:36:02 mummoth this isn't the complete list... but it's along the same line... http://www.checnet.org/healthehouse/education/quicklist-detail.asp?Main_ID=241
12:36:04 SaraD We used to eat white rice but now eat brown rice. Took the boys a while but now they eat it without a scrunched up face
12:37:19 SaraD we always have peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and with warmer weather it turns into soups
12:37:46 SaraD hubby eats out at lunch at either the juice shop or picks something up at the local drug store
12:38:18 SaraD breakfast is normally cereals. sometimes eggs or pancakes. always peaches for some reason my family loves peaches
12:38:27 mummoth we don't do lunch, we don morning snack & afternoon snack & Dh is home at 3:45, so we have an early supper
12:38:56 SaraD With little ones, it usually is snacks huh?
12:39:34 SaraD my oldest son will snack on something or drink water when he gets home around 4 and hubby gets home just after that and dinner is just before 5 -
12:39:44 mummoth yeah... they dont like eating big meals & they get cranky if they don't wat more regularly than 3X a day
12:39:47 SaraD snack in the evening is usually at 7
12:39:58 mummoth 7:30 is bedtime here
12:40:10 SaraD 9 here and still my kids complain
12:40:29 SaraD but they wake up early around 7pm sometimes 6
12:40:50 SaraD no more naps here either... I miss that time..
12:40:59 mummoth lol... well DS is only 3 1/2 & he gets up by 6:30 regardless of bedtime, so earlier is better for us
12:41:35 SaraD Do you all play outside a lot? Parks? Backyard? etc...
12:41:50 mummoth DD still napse... DS quit by the time he was 2 though, so I doubt thats going to last much longer
12:42:06 mummoth we do.
12:42:16 SaraD this really helps them develop their sense of play, imagination, and helps them sleep better at night.
12:42:24 mummoth they like the duck pond thats a 10 minute walk away
12:42:29 SaraD play and sleep are the most important things right now for them
12:42:47 SaraD even for my 10 year old even though he hates to agree with me
12:43:11 mummoth DS 'fishing' http://www3.telus.net/u2slow/kids/sept6_2005/DSC00774%20(Small).JPG

12:43:45 mummoth DD trying to get to the geese http://www3.telus.net/u2slow/kids/sept6_2005/DSC00780%20(Small).JPG
12:43:54 SaraD LOL those are cute
12:43:57 mummoth chili is pretty cheap to make
12:44:56 mummoth or stews...
12:45:13 mummoth thats what I've done on low budget weeks
12:45:42 mummoth but they're different every time I make them
12:45:43 SaraD Salads - Rice - Beans - even meat on sale if you eat meat (chicken instead of using it for one meal spread it over 2 or 3) don't make it the center of attention
12:46:22 kaylasmama Back now.
12:46:25 SaraD Chicken can be used in a dish/casserole or on its own, in a stirfry or in a salad
12:46:26 ajensengal hello, i saw that you were discussing budgeting and family meals and i just wanted to share something new that some neighbors and i are doing
12:46:40 SaraD go right ahead
12:46:43 ajensengal each family cooks one night per week for everyone
12:47:11 kaylasmama great idea! Must be a close neighborhood
12:47:13 SaraD Co-op cooking.... Do you all meet once a month too or is it strickly the cooking part...
12:47:43 SaraD I mean I know people who do this who also meet on Fridays to enjoy a neighborhood dinner
12:47:51 mummoth we don't really like brown meat, but I found that I can buy it ground & make it into meatballs...  onion, celery, wheat & seasonings... that stretches it a bit further
12:48:27 SaraD Mixing meat with Veggie protein will do the same (if you aren't vegetarian/vegan)
12:49:01 SaraD Thanks for sharing that ajensengal I wish I new my neighbors as well to do this.
12:49:14 ajensengal i'm sorry, i got pulled away on a phone call
12:49:26 ajensengal yes, we each do one night for everyone and take the rest of the week off
12:49:33 ajensengal it's working beautifully and saving us money
12:49:40 SaraD We have so many varities of culture, mexican, ukranian, white, african, asian That would be awesome\
12:49:46 ajensengal just wanted to share
12:50:15 SaraD So you cook 1 meal 7 times ?
12:50:21 SaraD so do the rest?
12:50:41 ajensengal no, i cook one night for 3 families and we take turns
12:50:53 ajensengal so each family only cooks for the group one night per week
12:51:01 SaraD Okay,
12:51:27 SaraD you don't cook for your family the other nights then right? it is delivered to you?
12:51:44 ajensengal we pick up
12:52:05 misty *choochoo*  *choochoo*
12:52:07 SaraD cool, you must trust the cleanliness of the people you swap with huh?
12:52:15 SaraD Hi misty again.
12:52:25 misty hi am listening
12:52:54 SaraD Do any of you belong to co-ops? Food co-ops?
12:52:58 ajensengal absolutely trust them and really enjoy the cooking
12:53:00 mummoth lol Im reminded of this now because DS just ran from the room at top speed with something... we have a lock on our fridge so he wont help himself to food... he would 1/2 eat a piece of fruit, forget about it & get himself another, and another
12:53:13 ajensengal i also run an organic produce co-op
12:53:16 mummoth by the end of the day thered be 4 half eaten apples around
12:53:32 SaraD That can really save time and money
12:53:41 misty we dont have anything like that here
12:53:48 SaraD Great, do you get it weekly or bi-weekly ajensengal?
12:53:50 ajensengal i get a delivery of lots of fruits and veggies once a week and about 10 families pick up from my house
12:53:51 misty i have a hard time just finding the herbs i need
12:54:02 ajensengal weekly
12:54:17 SaraD Great. Misty you don't live near any family farms?
12:54:19 ajensengal it is cost effective, especially with gas prices
12:54:26 misty no
12:54:31 misty sure dont
12:54:41 SaraD exactly and having it delivered and picked fresh with the different seasons is awesome.
12:55:09 misty i use herbs and esential oils in my soaps and i have a hard time finding them
12:55:18 SaraD They do have companies online that ship organic foods and veggies but I know cost is really an issue for a lot of people and shipping is usually high
12:55:47 ajensengal if anyone lives in the metro NY/NJ area, there is a company called Purple Dragon that runs a great co-op system
12:55:53 SaraD You can mail order them or even try growing them?
12:56:00 ajensengal and in South Jersey and Philly, the company we use is Suburban Organics
12:56:20 SaraD Ours comes out of Davis
12:56:25 SaraD Davis, CA
12:56:57 kaylasmama i've gotta run
12:57:07 SaraD we also have the Sac-Co-op store out here I really like but don't go there much since we no longer have a car
12:57:11 kaylasmama thanks  for all the great info, and hopefully see you next fri
12:57:13 SaraD by kayla
12:57:17 ajensengal the food co-op and meal sharing are 2 good ways to save $
12:57:20 SaraD K, will do
12:57:21 ajensengal take care all
12:58:17 SaraD Yeah, I'll be back next week 9am PST and will talk more about Saving via Recipes and less processed foods in our diet.
12:58:53 SaraD It really does pay to make it yourself. (unless time is what you are aiming to save over $$)
12:59:15 misty we dont even have whole food stores here
12:59:33 SaraD Good by cali_smom, Misty, Mummoth I need to get going. will be picking up someone soon--
